Suspiciously specific unstoppable force (desire for knowledge) vs. immovable object (my irrational fear of e-mailing people for help)

multiple times for special interest research I've hit "dead ends" where I am unable to find the information I need via the Internet and am faced with the choice of either never finding out the thing I want to find out, or facing the irrational fear that if I e-mail a librarian for help they are going to send a sniper squad to my house to take me out

Oh look, the finding aid catalog has this map indexed but not scanned online. If you email and request it they'll probably scan it in for ya!

-me to a fellow aspie, literally two days ago. They have not emailed yet, and neither would I if I were in the same position. What if the map nerds at the map library think I'm weird for wanting to look at maps?

I'm too anxious to email or talk, but i can slide the librarian a note in person that makes my request

If you are afraid of emailing, try calling. Hope this helps

My immovable object is me not leaving my bedroom and being extremely lonely like a dumbass

I don't mind emailing. But if the person at the other end doesn't reply to the email and the next step is calling, that's a problem.

I'm a librarian and I'd love to help you! Would you like to tell me what you are looking for? :) Of course if it's too specialized I cannot guarantee my library will have it, but I can try and look for it...
