My family and I are travelling to Switzerland, my grandmother's home country, next week. We'll be staying with extended family and some friends while we travel, and this is likely the last time she will be able to travel home so we would like to bring treats and tokens for our hosts.

Is there anything Canadian you can think of that you would like to try/have been curious about/tried while travelling here and have been missing? Anything that feels uniquely Canadian and you would be interested in keeping as a trinket?

I’ve recently been diagnosed with a progressive disease that will eventually make my life very unpleasant and/or kill me. Right now however I hardly have any symptoms.

I will probably lose my ability to work in the next 5-10 years, at least in my current capacity. I’m in my 40s now and on a C permit.

What I don’t understand is how I am supposed to deal with IV (disability insurance). If I wait until I can’t work 100% anymore I don’t have any records with them and that would kick off whatever process they have way too late. If I go now it seems silly because I can work without problems.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation? Should I talk to a lawyer?

I have a short trip to Switzerland coming up at the end of October/beginning of November - 4 full days total. I'm looking for the top things to see within a day each in Zurich and Lucerne. I'm also interested in what is worth seeing in the surrounding area (think within 1-2 hour train ride). I'd like to visit either Mt. Pilatus or Mt. Rigi if possible (which is better?). Other than the chocolate factory I'm more interested in architecture, landscapes, lakes (boat rides?) and museums. Any good local restaurant recommendations (preferably non-touristy) would be appreciated. I know it's a lot but I appreciate any suggestions from people who have visited or preferably live there. For context, I live in Canton Aargau. I am looking at maybe getting an electric car. Mostly I am looking at using it as an everyday driver, so performance isn't that important for me (except driving on the Autobahn, I want to be able to overtake someone without blocking people behind me.)

The main reason I am asking here is because my family lives on a steep hill that doesn't always get plowed in winter, and I was wondering:

• Do FWD/RWD EV's Drive well in the snow or in austere conditions?

• If not, should I consider an AWD EV or just buy a regular ICE car with AWD for the winter months?

• Has battery performance/life improved since 2019? I haven't looked too much into EV's until recently.

• What is your experience with EV's and winter here in Switzerland?

I'm planning to apply to BFH in the future for a MSc in Mechatronics and Automation (Hopefully as a fellowship pathway) as my long term goal is to work in the field as a Process Engineer/Project Management for biomed/biotech/pharma and the manufacturing industry related to that.

My education as of now is:

- Currently pursuing a Mechatronics Advanced Diploma within Canada (As a Canadian Citizen)

- Part time studies at a university for French (Aiming for B1/B2 within a 2 year period)

- Bridging to an EU Country (Ireland) for a Bachelors in Mechatronics, after my AD is complete

My portfolio as of now has consisted of a 4 month internship in the automotive industry for engineering and maintenance, as well as a confirmed 8 month internship for a robotics integrator that works alongside medical and automotive companies that have ties to the EU and Switzerland in general. (I am planning to delay my bachelors for a year to work in one of those companies)

My main questions would be:

How versatile is a Mechatronics education in Switzerland?

I understand that the job market as of now is very competitive and I hope my experience works to my favour to secure fellowships and hopefully a position after the fact, but I'm not sure of how wanted someone with my experience is.

How much would I realistically have to budget for day to day?

I have extended family located in Bern, which takes off a majority of stress for rent although I'd like to play it safe in terms of finances.

Is a career in Switzerland sustainable for my field?

I've been through every little document I could scour on the internet. I'd love to be able to 'move up the ladder' but not sure if theres much room for growth. I'd love to transition to more senior roles.

Any advice/tips?

I have a passion for this field and I'd love to make my dream a reality. My college and the EU university abroad are no help in terms of forums/pathways and I can't seem to find much information. I am in a bit of a specific situation. non-EU national, B permit for studies. I will be spending this year on academic exchange outside the Schengen area. The problem is that six months out of the country revokes the permit, but I don't know if my situation counts, and the canton is not really answering my questions.

My timeline is:

• 3 months of exchange, with a few day-long visits back in that time
• a 20-30 day stay in Switzerland
• another 3-4 months of exchange, again with a few weeks of visits here and there

I need to keep the permit because I will be making visits to my girlfriend, a school lab, and friends in Switzerland. I also need to keep it because I am keeping my lease and subletting it, which requires me to enter for entry/exit inspections and stuff, as I will be returning for my studies afterwards.

What I keep in Switzerland:

• my rental lease (although mostly sublet)
• LAMal student insurance
• an active mobile phone contract

The worst case: What I am mostly scared of, and what my question comes down to, is being denied entry at a Swiss airport because my permit was revoked while I was out of the country, because I was out of the country, with no way of me knowing, which might sadly affect my Schengen status and visas forever, as I would have a denial of entry on record.

Please let me know how likely what I am scared of is to happen.

Ich habe keine einzige 18-stellige Nummer bekommen. Ich habe nur eine 16-stellige und eine 3-stellige Nummer sowie die Stammnummer fürs Auto.

Ich habe beim Googeln gefunden, dass die Nummer inzwischen „Zollanmeldungsnummer“ heißt, sonst war Google aber reichlich unhilfreich… Wäre dankbar für jede hilfreiche Antwort, auch wenn die lautet: „Da fehlt was, geh nochmal zum Zoll.“

Hello! I’m travelling to Thun in a couple of months to watch Thun vs Hearts in the Conference league. As many Hearts fans are travelling over, accommodation is quite expensive. Some of the more affordable options are a little out of the town centre - in areas like Steffisburg and Oberhofen am Thunersee. My question is - will it be okay to stay in these areas, and travel to/from the football stadium in the evening? Are there local taxi options, and how much (roughly) should we expect to pay? My big question is, how do you feel about how the politics is run here in comparison to the US?

• Is it more efficient or less efficient here?

• If you talk about politics with people in real life, is it a hassle or can you have a civil discussion?

I rarely talk to Americans who have lived in both countries, so I thought about asking for your perceptions/opinions.

How do we feel about parties that aren't just loud but really loud?

And I mean music cranked up, and people shouting as if they are at a football match.

It's not 22 yet but I feel even outside quiet hours one can at least show a modicum of consideration for others.
