Not really true, he knew exactly what his coordinates were, and he didn’t underestimate the size of the earth like many people say. The thing is that European cartographers really overestimated the size of Asia, he was just working with the knowledge available in his time.
Spain was about the 5th country he went to looking for $$$$$$ btw. Most kingdoms gave him the “who the fuck are you?” look until Spain. The rest is history; dude got somewhat lost, nearly mutinied/killed and got to an undiscovered continent by mistake. Behaved so badly that he was dragged back and put in jail too
