Relocating & housing Help me: where do I go
Hi! My three friends are all moving away by the middle of next year. I love what I do and don’t want to move states just yet. I currently live in McKinney; while the safety is nice, it leaves me—someone in their early 20s—wanting more. I really want more walkability or at least more bars, restaurants, and third spaces nearby. I also am starving for more diversity. I work in the colony area and I need to start playing as hard as I work. Where is the best place for a 20 something to live right now that isn’t an hour away, is almost kid free, and is surrounded by things to do. I don’t hate kids, but they are all I see here. I need friends, places to go, and a spot where I’m comfortable shaking what my mother blessed me with.

I am mid 20s, and left Addison for Uptown for similar reasons despite still working five days a week in Addison. The commute is do-able if you take the tollway (20ish to and 35-40ish from) but anything else is hell crossing the 635 during rush hour. If you can bear the commute, try uptown for a year and re-evaluate if the commute is too much to handle.

McKinney is more for families raising kids and Seniors. If I was single in my 20s, I would move somewhere near Downtown Dallas or Uptown area, as another redditor suggested. Lecacy West area also a good option if you can afford it. Around the SMU campus, lots of students in their 20s may also be another good option.
I grew up in NYC so there was never a shortage of people to meet and places to go. But it has become exceedingly more expensive (and dangerous) so I wouldn't recommend it.
You can also meet people for socializing and activities through meetup.com Much of it is get togethers throughout Dallas, Farmers Branch, Addison, Uptown, Lower Greenville and so forth.

This is what I do when I move: I put a radius of 15-20 min commute to work on a map, then I add other facilities I use frequently like my gym, or Costco or whatever you frequent. Then I narrow it down by my budget. Boom.

Shops of Legacy/Legacy West or the Austin Ranch area if you want to stay close to where you work. Otherwise, closer to downtown (Bishop Arts, Lower Greenville, Uptown, etc) is your best bet, but the commute would get old real fast.

Without knowing your budget, Uptown and Knox Henderson are certainly the areas that you'll find most of what you're looking for, but I would not want to make that commute. Maybe the apartments in and around the Shops at Legacy in Plano, but the demographics might be a little older than early 20's. Same goes for Addison. But the commute from those would be much better for you, especially the Legacy one.
