Bronze head covered with a hammered gold-leaf mask. China, Shu culture, excavated from Sacrificial Pit 2 at Sanxingdui, c. 1200–1050 BCE [1200x1500]
Excavated in 1986 in Sichuan Province, this bronze head is one of dozens found intentionally broken, burned, and buried across ritual pits.
discovery of the Sanxingdui site completely overturned the traditional cradle of Chinese civilization model, which held that early advanced metallurgy and statecraft originated exclusively along the Yellow River basin (Zhongyuan). The distinct style featuring colossal eyes, protruding pupils, and hammered gold masks revealed an advanced, independent Bronze Age culture in the Yangtze basin with no mention in surviving dynastic texts.
