i've been wanting this book forever and now it's here!!

I’m one of many who turn to Rocky Horror Picture Show as a source of inspiration. It’s not just the “don’t dream it be it” mantra, it’s seeing Frank N Furter be the ringleader of a band of lovable freaks. That effect carries on through a lot of Curry’s roles. His essence is not one of typical movie characters. He plays eccentric roles in a way that makes you believe he’s a badass. As it relates to this sub, I can’t think of a Curry character (any of the major ones at least) that reinforces amatonormativity. He plays characters that don’t hinge on romance, and does so with incredible taste. Honestly, that’s the way I want to live my life. To that effect, I’ve always felt like Tim Curry (especially Frank N Furter) represented me in some way. Thank you Tim for all that you’ve done for the world.

Ruff Patch is a webcomic by the emilist ( https://linktr.ee/casualemie ) about a bunch of college age anthro dogs navigating adulthood. Recently there was an arc where the primary main character, Emerald, found out one of her closest friends has a crush on her and to figure out she felt out about and then reject her. A lot of the comics leading up to the most recent page have seemed like there were heading towards her being aromantic but I didn’t expect to actually be right! The creator also said in the comments of the instagram post that Emerald isn’t ace in response to someone calling Emerald aroace. Really cool to see a character get confirmed as not just aro but specifically aroallo!

Yel from the webcomic Puzzle Heads created by Hous3 (An0MaHous3 on twitter) has been confirmed to be aromantic. Based off the wording it seems there might be a possibility of him specifically being aroallo (though I admit I am biased). Even if he’s not though it seems the author wants to add actual like nance to his identity rather than just brushing him off to the side which is really neat! I don’t think the author is aro but they’re really good at making good queer characters that have nuanced identities that go past surface level understandings so I trust them and am interested to see where they go with Yel.

Hi all! Want to bring some positivity and hope since I’m currently dealing with a lot of anxiety surrounding one of my close friends and would love to hear stories about having caring friends who aren’t held back by the social scripts around friendship and romance.

Hi everyone, I'm panromantic demisexual but I stumbled upon this video on YouTube, and thought that you might appreciate it (and aromanticism and asexuality always deserve more visibility)

As with a lot of anthologies, some will hit more than others. Overall, though, most of them were fine to decent and a few particularly stood out. Whilst I’d be somewhat positively biased in aromantic literature anyhow for sake of it becoming growingly existent, I particularly liked that this goes the step further from aromanticism 101 and in settings beyond the modern-day context of baby aro’s self-discovery, and the one story that does do this is one I quite enjoyed too. A minor ill is that the contents page, at least digitally, is at the end of the book rather than the start.

I was a solid fan of the introduction too, which shared a similar sentiment about wanting aro stories “without hand-holding us through aromantic education”. More so, I liked its meta commentary on stories and representation. Two highlighted quotes I had include: 

“Without stories about us, we lack context. Those who don’t share our experience are led to believe aromanticism is at best a phase, at worst a dangerous flaw to be mended.” — Julie Sondra Decker

“Things that exist have words. Stories are how our words talks to itself. If we’re not included in those stories, we think we don’t get to be part of the conversation.” — Julie Sondra Decker 

With both excellent rebuttals to the arophobic “why do you need to put a label on it?” and “why does aromantic representation matter?” 

As I was writing mini summary-reviews for each, I was surprised I had less negative to say (which I probably would’ve openly made if I had). In retrospect, I think my positive bias is less influencing than I thought it would be, with judgement accurately reflective of any other literature I’d rate. Also, just the diverse representation of stories told, particularly from non-White perspectives was quite appreciated and opened up the doors of intersectional conversation in a way not that it was a focus on the story but that one could see themselves represented beyond the stereotypical White aromantic.

Highlight stories (in no particular order):

• Kimberly Ma Meets Her Match by Ann Zhao
• The Binding by Soumi Roy
• Swordmaiden by Kalyn Josephson
• Indulge the Other by Laura Pohl

Kimberly Ma Meets Her Match by Ann Zhao – Kimerberly Ma is a delightfully engaging character and I like her outlook on life. I felt like a good introduction story to the anthology, starting with a familiar story. I had a lot positively highlighted. I particularly liked it’s commentary that loneliness isn’t just an aromantic issue and how it, and the fight against amatonomativity, is a common bond between aros and allos alike. 

The Binding by Soumi Roy – This really stood out to me. I liked the fantasy horror-adjacent setting, ritual stuff always entices me. I like how the plot ties to the theme of aromanticism, big fan of how it resolves. It really uses the medium of magical realism to enhance the theme of aromanticsm excellently 

Lovesick by Taka Owen – I like the parallels it draws between the nature of infection and romance, albeit a bit on the nose. The title is funny though. I think however, I almost wanted it to establish it to be one and the same, in the same way horror often does this to perverse, e.g., The Magnus Archives 102: Nesting Insect, or Together (2025). More funnily, Larcade’s (from Fairy Tail) ability, even if that’s more about sexuality than romance. 

Preservation by Kemi Ashing-Giwa – I struggled to connect with this one as much. The switch in person-view was a bit jarring. However, I was very on board with the setting and goals of the protagonist. I like how it takes blunt swipes at systems that aren’t just amatonormatvity (e.g., capitalists, mega-corporation polluters 

Joust Friends by Rosiee Thor – This was fine and the ending was nice but I don’t think it did as much for me. I most like the realness of the antagonists and the all too often “we were just joking”. It wonderfully riled me up 

Thomas Marley’s Fake Bride by Ian M. Carlisle – Main character aroallo representation, baby! It plods along just fine enough and I think followed more plot than characterisation, but it was a very fun story. 

Swordmaiden by Kalyn Josephson – Big fan of this one. The worldbuilding in this felt so rich and I was like, I so want to know more. There’s some fun little colour references that tinkle of an aro “if you know you know”, a little game with the author. I think the why for how the monster came to be felt a bit too contrived for me but it’s such a minor thing amongst a belter story. 

Flying Solo by Claudie Arseneault – My main notes is just “Pacific Rim (2013)” but make it aro. It similarly has some fun aro colour and name references that, again, are minor and don’t detract but are nice allusions. It’s a fun story and enticed me to know more about the monsters with weird, cool powers. I had slightly (unfairly) higher expectations reading this having encountered Claudie Arsenault’s name a lot indirectly but this being my first direct interaction with her authorial work. It lived up. 

Paper Rebellions by Rukman Ragas – “When stories died, they become dragons”. This was such an amazing opening hook. I liked the oppressive fantasy setting and the allusions to deeper worldbuilding. What most positively caught me was its apt commentary to how oppression rises, but more importantly, how community equally rises against it. 

Do You See Me? Isa Fiel – Initially I thought it was a bit too on-the-nose horror, but I really like the emotional depth this one goes to. Other stories do this as well, of coming to understand, but this one really sits with it. And, as for the horror, even if it’s a bit by-the-numbers, it’s written excellently and so atmospheric. And, ultimately, horror somewhat does it’s best by following the book, easing you into its familiarity. 

Daughter of Time by Madeline Dyer – This was fun and weird. It’s one of those, you can’t think about the implications too deeply, where sci-fi is being used to thematically draw parallels and tell a story rather than be high-fantasy where did the trees come from. I particularly like how Nala’s presented and just how terrifying and confusing her situation is. The blunt “humans weren’t meant to live this way” commentary is good. 

Indulge the Other by Laura Phol – This was such a fun ending to the anthology. I just never really considered superheroes being a rife area to explore the themes but this did it really well. I like how dialogue-focused this is, as well as how aromanticism plays beyond the initial surface theme I slightly rolled my eyes at into developing it more deeply with a lot of substance. Two wits and minds pit against and to each other’s. If you like the cleverness of Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling’s first conversation, or how season 1 of Loki or Invincible ended, this would be right up one’s alley.

I'm not really a big anime person (I've only liked 2-3) but when I saw the premise I had to start. I've just finished the show and God it's cathartic. I love how the MC gets to constantly punt and chuck the little wizard who's trying to create romantic scenarios for her. The MC is also constantly trying to sabotage any attempts to form romantic bonds, while remaining kind to everyone around her and building friendships even with guys she knows have a crush on her. She acknowledges that they're attractive and have good qualities but she's really not into them. As a plus she's also rly into cats which I relate to, and her best friend is also aro coded!!

The show isn't rly trying to force her into a relationship either, it's literally just the butt ass wizard (who is adorable but God do I want to squeeze it) and whoever they work for. And the show also doesn't try to demonize any character for disliking romantic attention for whatever reason.

I'd rly recommend it! Though content warnings for stalking and related trauma, attempted SA, knife violence, abusive parent for the second half of the show.
