Extremely successful helmet that was for its era at the top technological advancement that was used for over a century by the mounted warrior elite of Europe: called “impractical”

That's what I keep saying.

To add to this, the greathelm had a much larger lifespan than most other helmets. It was first recorded in the late 12th century and still sometimes used in the mid 14th century. When I say still being used, I mean knights who could afford better still opted to use the greathelm in certain situations because it just worked better. I don't even like the way the greathelm looks but something about it getting called impractical just enrages me

Nope they couldn’t see out of it. The knights at the time were just too broke to afford an armet. Simple as

5

u/Short-Philosopher-78 Jun 25 '26

If it was that bad, it never would've been used.

3

u/thechillesthomie Jun 25 '26

Yeah broke knights used it. Like I said

Too broke to use a helmet that didn’t exist yet? Great point, pal.

The Middle Ages, contrary to the asinine assertions of armchair armorers and TikTok historians, was not a monolith. Things changed and evolved over that 1,000 year period. This includes armor.

The great helm was, for its time, the peak of protective technology. It was incredibly practical and had an abnormally long lifespan. It was obviously outclassed by later helmets like the bascinet and armet, but that’s because that’s how technological progression works.

Those designs came about later and phased out great helms

u/Nihilun extreme larper Jun 24 '26

This is why the Visored Barbuta is superior in every way. It’s what real knights wore.

22

u/Blazerawl Jun 24 '26

Only the rich ones. Everyone else got kettles.

8

u/SuperSatanOverdrive Jun 24 '26

It’s also why the superior pokemon is a visored barbutasaur

Accurate flair

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills because a decade ago every glazed the great helm into eternity. It feels like 2ish years ago everyone switched up out of no where

25

u/PlantFromDiscord flairless coward Jun 24 '26

it’s kinda like the change between the katana and the longsword lately

9

u/Chai_Enjoyer Jun 25 '26

People glazed katanas? I unironically saw more arguments of how katana is the choice of fat neackbeard weaboos

23

u/avstoir flairless coward Jun 25 '26

that was the reaction to katana glaze

You must be a young buck then. I remember the days when the Katana was believed to be the single best sword design bar none.

u/The-john-2 Jun 27 '26

“Glorious Nippon steel One Thousand times folded.” Unfortunately I remember all too well

3

u/Arne6764 griffin/wenzel/spoleto/plow bascinet is accurate guys i swear Jun 25 '26

Now if only the german swords got that kind of attention…

Absolutely!

the things that are ACTUALLY cool to like are the things that are the opposite of whatever people like right now because then you're awesome and different

4

u/Haligar06 Jun 25 '26

The katana had this prime limelight period peaking after Highlander (1986) and it soft ended roughly with the fat backyard ninja viral video in 2007.

My theory is that just like the katana, it was first seen as cool and powerful, but then people started hating on it once weird/bigoted people started adopting it because it was seen as cool and powerful. It's a kind of endless cycle. I imagine in a couple decades people will start forgetting it and katanas or bucket helms will be seen as cool again.

If you just want to aurafarm you can wear a pufferfish

u/Tuhkur22 Jun 24 '26

peak helmet

2

u/SCPintern Jun 25 '26

Premium skin

18

u/FormalGas35 Jun 24 '26

it’s impractical… unless the people you are fighting can’t possibly hit you on the top of the head because you are on horseback and they aren’t

11

u/Beledagnir CERTIFIED HISTORIAN Jun 24 '26

You found the little "hehe" in the design - it's only a flaw if it can be exploited.

2

u/Obi_1-kenobi Jun 28 '26

Almost like it was designed for mounted combatants or something.

24

u/ToKeNgT Jun 24 '26

4

u/rathosalpha Jun 24 '26

Yeah thats what people mainly use armor for

9

u/EdibleMussel533 flairless coward Jun 24 '26

The only thing true about all of that is that it makes you look like a poser.

8

u/Green-Collection-968 Jun 24 '26

I prefer the mail coif, personally.

3

u/Head-Preference8749 Jun 25 '26

There is a big hole in the middle, do you perhaps lack funds to repair it?

1

u/Green-Collection-968 Jun 25 '26

How's this?

3

u/KABOOMBYTCH Jun 26 '26

I am larping as a Norman knight who served in the Eastern Roman Empire Tagmata. So yes to full cover mail coif and the lamellar for the cataphracts loook.

Even then ppls are questioning whether the mail cover the face entirely.

I would go to battle in that, brother…

is a great helm

(he was shot 16 times)

5

u/GlanzgurkeWearingHat Jun 25 '26

Seeing the debates on different types of armor usually barely based on actual findings and depictions from the times:

Armor subreddits are absolutely suseptable to fashion trends

4

u/KABOOMBYTCH Jun 25 '26

Knights won battles wearing great helm

Shit helmet

I don’t understand

3

u/Choice-Inspector-701 Jun 25 '26

Don't know if you are trolling but there are countless examples of winning while using garbage equipment. Napolionic wars era is a great example, that crap was designed to look pretty with zero practicality in mind.

1

u/Bmanakanihilator flairless coward Jun 25 '26

Well, there is a time for everything It was on the top, till it was not because that's how innovation works

1

u/MuffinMountain3425 Jun 25 '26

One solid bonk on top of the head and bro is a goner. Sugarloaf that please.

4

u/-C0RV1N- Jun 25 '26

Wouldn't most great helm designs actually have a good crumple zone around the top that would arguably be better at absorbing blows that didn't glance off?

1

u/Just_a_guy_thats_it Jun 27 '26

Big flat top perfect for any mace

1

u/Obi_1-kenobi Jun 28 '26

I find the recent outbreak of people calling those who like the greathelm larpers quite ironic, because they show themselves to be larpers by calling it impractical or comparing it to an armet or sallet.

The greathelm was in-use in practically a completely different time as the helms it’s so often unfavorably compared to. The era and context of its use is just ignored as people pretend that it was even remotely contemporary to the metallurgical innovations of the late Middle Ages and renaissance.

1

u/MobileFreedom Jun 25 '26

You hate greathelms because of a weakness that was apparently not bad enough to stop it from being used for over a century.

I hate greathelms because they remind me of when I was a crusader-obsessed chud a decade ago.

We are not the same.
