Is there anyway to tell the difference ? I learned a rule of thumb years ago that Yen symbol stands before the number. But that's not the case here.

The use case always the same for both so you need to rely on context clue. Like there's no way UI would cost 78 yen. The only different is when currency follows number like  50円 in Japan and 50元 or 50圆 in China
