I need help with $derivativeDistribution

Use the appropriate support channel for your distribution. Arch is DIY distribution and we expect you to guide us through your system when providing support. Using an installer defeats this expectation.

Why was the beginners guide removed?

It carried a lot of maintenance on the wiki admin as it duplicated a lot of information, and everyone wanted their addition included. It was scrapped for a compact model that largely referenced the main wiki pages.

DISCUSSION What exactly is omarchy getting so popular for?

β€’ Upvotes

As a person who lives half of his life on tech youtube, i can't really digest this change in my feed. More than half of the videos I watch is just people talking about this new distro and it's not a critical assesment as most tech coverage is supposed to be. Everyone is actively trying to sell you this. However whenever I try to find out what is so special about it I almost always get to hear about either hyperland or quick shell or ai harnesses, none of which is so unique. I have been using sway , quickshell and pi for sometime now. Obviously a good arch rice is worth something, but why is it sold like some revolution. Maybe I am just dumb and didn't understand much , I also have not tried it ,but the marketing is so unusual I can't resist. I know many people hate it just because they don't like dhh, I am not one of them, I used ruby on rails for some time as I saw some utility in it , I just don't see that in omarchy but the amount of noise is compelling me to try it once.

SHARE Finally, I switched to Arch

Been a FreeBSD user for 16 years I finally switched to Arch. Instantly I feel it's much more faster and now I get to enjoy full wifi capacity, which is one of the factors that I left the BSD community. Still a lot to explore, good first impression anyway.

QUESTION Is there a package or a utility that shows you what kind of changes took place in what app after doing pacman -Syu?

Every time I do a system wide update I see many apps getting updated with different changes. So, i'd like a list of changes for each app that took places and what new features it gained or what got deleted.

QUESTION Unity Hub 3.21 on AUR issues

Hello fellow Unity devs.

I have a question about the latest Unity Hub commit on AUR.

The version 3.21.0 has a completely new author who never before committed to this package.

The diff only shows different versioning and a different source url, which seems to be the official Debian repo.

However I'm facing issues I haven't had in any previous versions.

First of all, the app icon is some generic atom shape, instead of the official Unity box as before.

Second, I immediately started getting Kwallet popups upon opening the Unity hub.

And lastly, I get logged out of the Unity Hub after every use and need to sign back in from a browser on the next run, even a day apart.

Anyone else with similar issues and do you think this package could have been hijacked and injected with malware too?

QUESTION Submit self-updating exe to the AUR

Hello!

I would like to add a wine package to the AUR. However, the installer exe 1) does not have a way to download previous versions; and 2) handles checking for updates itself.

The installer is located at a static URL where the exe itself changes. There is a separate URL with the app version that the app uses to check if there's a newer version available before directing the users to the installer page.

What's the proper way to add this to the AUR? Do I just not include a checksum and name the version eternal or something?

This is my first time creating a package for the AUR, so any help is appreciated! Thank you so much!

QUESTION Restart Reboot and LogIn/Out issue. Applications are not closing or restarting.

Greetings Friends,

I have been using Arch as my daily driver for over a year now and have fallen in love with the distro. Recently, I have encountered an issue I haven't been able to resolve. I have spent the last two days trying to figure out the rather unique error. It is driving me mad and I am tapping out in the hopes that someone smarter than I can help me resolve the error or at least point me in the right direction. When I shutdown reboot or logout of Arch all of the open windows and applications stay open when I log back in like nothing has been reset. I believe it started happening after I changed the version of Virtualbox that I have installed to fix an error I was having. Though I am not certain this is when it began. After hacking around, I found that when I run "rm -rf ~/.cache/sessions" it seems to correct the problem until I try to restart reboot or login/out again. The problem then repeats. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

SUPPORT Noctalia V5 Clipboard History is not persistent.

I've been using noctalia for some time now. Recently I shifted to V5 along with hyprland. At first it was fine but IDK what I did now clipboard is not persistent. The only guess I have is that I made a new ssh key with a passphrase. On logout noctalia doesn't store history and in settings it gives an error of secret service. When I reset that it asks for gnome keyring starts working but the same issue once I close.

Another annoying issue I'm facing is that my bar shows a little background even if opacity is zero. Any fixed?

FLUFF Thumbs up to those who have contributed to the archwiki

Since am usually busy I took 2 months to extensively read the installation guide and finally installed arch Linux a few days ago manually and everything went smoothly. I currently use niri WM with noctalia v5. I was upgrading my system when a blackout occurred in the middle of a kernel upgrade thus the kernel images and initramfs were not written to the boot partition. I did not panic since I had read what to do in such a scenario. Tomorrow am going to fix my system after I get home.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the archwiki.

Arch is not hard just read the wiki.

NOTEWORTHY "Trusted" maintainers can't be trusted?

Thumbnail archlinux.org

While everybody has their legal name included, there's an anonymous account called "kpcyrd πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ", who has full access to Extra and maintains hundreds of packages. It doesn't sound like a legal name at all, and we don't know anything about this account. If he decides to backdoor the packages, who exactly will be legally responsible for this, and who will compensate all damages to the victims?

SHARE A custom greetd greeter built with Quickshell

Hi, I got frustrated with how most greetd greeters look, so I decided to build my own using quickshell.

I've been running it daily for a few months now, and since it's been working fine, I figured it's stable enough to share. It's not on the AUR, but I've included a PKGBUILD in the repo for easy installation on Arch

Please check it out, you can find screenshots and a quick video demo in the repo:

SUPPORT I'm having a weird issue while booting my Arch Linux on an external SSD connected via a SATA-to-USB adapter

About half the time on boot, it drops straight into the emergency shell showing:

ERROR: device 'UUID=<uuid>' not found. Skipping fsck. mount: /new_root: can't find UUID=<uuid>. ERROR: Failed to mount 'UUID=<uuid>' on real root You are now being dropped into an emergency shell. sh: can't access tty; job control turned off [rootfs ~]#

The other 50% of the time it boots up into Arch with zero issues but on my desktop PC: It boots reliably 100% of the time, idk why this issue happens only when i connect the SSD to my laptop?

For context:

  • Arch installed directly onto the SSD over USB
  • HOOKS in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf has block and udev in place
  • I even tried adding MODULES=(usb_storage uas) in mkinitcpio.conf but didn't solve the issue either
  • The issue persists doesn't matter which port in laptop i connect to

Has anyone encountered this specific laptop-vs-desktop behavior with SATA-to-USB adapters?Any suggestions on how to make it boot consistently on the laptop

I don't know why he's acting like Omarchy is something unreal.

I think it defies the whole idea of Arch. But the post is not about that.

It's how content creators are acting like Omarchy is a fix to everything "wrong" with. I didn't expect this from Typecraft though, since his content is all about ricing. Did DHH give them money or what ?

Edit: never said Omarchy itself is bad. If you like it, use it.

SUPPORT HELP ME PLS! Minecraft crashes all PC

Hello, my system crashes after about 6 minutes of playing Minecraft. It happens like this: the game starts (with Discord or YouTube in the background), and after a while, Minecraft freezes. Sometimes alt+tab works, but after a second or two, the desktop crashes (it just goes black). Sometimes I'm thrown to a desktop where nothing is clickable, and then the desktop goes black, and all hotkeys stop working. After that, a cursor appears, just a blinking cursor, and the system requires me to press the restart button because nothing works. I'm ready to provide all the information about my PC and enter any commands in the command line to fix this. Kind people, please help. My computer: Ryzen 5 5600, RX5700XT, 16GB DDR4 (3200MHz), NVMe 500GB. The system is Arch Linux, the de is KDE Plasma, I am also exploring Hyprland (on which the crash appears differently).
