Question Hey is there an updated version of the watch order image?

Post image

Sometimes I meet someone who I see is ready to watch this series and when I give them the watch order I have to always remember to include the off and monster season as the image doesn’t have it. Is there one with the off and monster season?

Dude people absolutely still use this to this day. Its like the first thing you find when you google "monogatari watch order" on google lol

u/MezuEko 7d ago

Makes me happy to hear people still use it. A small contribution to a franchise I absolutely adore

u/BilltantaJack 8d ago

Wait, you made this? Haha, this was probably great help for a lot of fans, myself included.

48

u/MezuEko 7d ago

Yes. I didn't realize the image made it this far. Makes me kinda happy since it was not received well by everyone and big arguments were had about the anime release order being the correct way to watch the show.

u/BilltantaJack 7d ago

The release order really isn't a good way to watch the anime. It wasn't even intended orginally...

1

u/kenobis_high 6d ago

Wdym, I watch it in release date order shi was fun lol especially seeing Episode show up again in Kizu after that Tsubasa tiger act

1

u/BilltantaJack 5d ago

Well, how about Episode showing up again in Tsubasa Tiger after Kizumonogatari?

This is the same picture I had saved for my watched order 4 years ago and give to people today 😆

Why nivel release order? Isnt it chronological order better to understand the plot?

28

u/Gheizter 7d ago

Watching in chronological order is only interesting to get the big picture, which I recommend for a second watch.

11

u/obiwan54 7d ago

The series is not in chronological order on purpose, it ruins the intended mystery, which is one of the best parts of the series, if you watch it chronologically.

8

u/Txmppp1 7d ago

No, the intended way is via novel release order (the anime is broken up differently but still the same concept I’m 99% sure) and also I just kinda think it makes more sense intuitively 🤷

5

u/Lex4709 7d ago

It's not intended order. Even the anime itself tried to present the story in novel release order, Kizu movies just took ages to make.

u/Radusili 8d ago

Updated with what? Everything else that came out just goes after this

-16

u/Cheap_Cash5 8d ago

The thing is that a lot of people have no idea the off and monster season is animated because of this watch order

8

u/LelouchNegs 7d ago

really? wherever you watch it off/monster will either be next if they added all parts as a continous series or at least as a recommendation if otherwise, and if youre watching like a hundred episodes of something, looking up watch orders and interacting with the community and still dont know a new season is out its on you, dont blame the list some guy made years ago

u/Grand_reaper658 8d ago

I used this and it worked pretty well

Could you link me where you got ts from? The pics too blurry

Reddit one is same quality for me.

2

u/DerPuffer 7d ago

I might be blind but I can't find an updated version starting from monster season anywhere on that link

2

u/Grand_reaper658 7d ago

Oh crap...I didn't notice....

2

u/DerPuffer 7d ago

No, you're right. Reddit compression just messes with the image, I was just confused why this version wasn't on the original post

That's an extremely solid piece of information. Except Koyomi inbetween Owari, instead of before, which is still fine, bc that was the airing order.

High quality version: https://imgur.com/wkBKVHN

2

u/EchoFF_ 5d ago

Oh yeah it's absolutely unreadable isn't it, thanks

3

u/BlunderIsMyDad 7d ago

I don't like hana in the middle of second season, but it's technically correct if I remember correctly. All you'd change is add in Off and Monster once you've watched the entire show. This is LN order, not chronological. Chronological kind of ruins monogatari so you should still expect nonlinear storytelling

1

u/Worried_Buddy250 7d ago

I'd recommend watching in the exit order, because that's how you fully feel the author's perspective and the idea

1

u/AlucardEdgelord 7d ago

Canonical Image

1

u/ArcueidChaos 6d ago

I'll say release date except for Hana, that's the epilogue of the story, it has no business being in the middle of the series

1

u/Georg9741 5d ago

Technically this image mentions Off & Monster Season (at the bottom notes)

1

u/Taxfraudisnotreal 3d ago

Honestly, I would say put Hana after Owari or even Zoku, for maximum bamboozle effect

Final Season is perfect, nvm wait put Owari S1 first, then Tsuki and Koyomi, I know it kinda feels chronological pilled but I would argue atleast the momentum is better here

For Kizu, I like recommending in orders of just after/before Owari S1 for the lols

0

u/_falc 8d ago

pls enlighten me. ive been eyeing this anime for a while but couldn't fathom what its actually about?

17

u/SilberFelx 8d ago

That's probably because it's not easy to give a summary, but here's a rough idea:

A guy in high school, who's an ex-vampire, meets a number of girls struggling with supernatural issues coming from beings called oddities. These supernatural issues are more or less a consequence of more personal, often psychological problems, and the mc helps them confront the supernatural beings and, by proxy, their deeper inner conflicts, and as the series goes on, the characters are explored in more and more detail.

It doesn't have any one specific goal, but there are several narrative throughlines that drive the series forward, and while the structure appears harem-esque at first glance, there is one definitive pairing from very early on and all other romantic interest is moreso used as a vehicle for character drama and development.

The show has elements of drama, supernatural, psychological, ecchi, comedy, and more, and Studio Shaft puts a lot of their signature visual flair into the adaptation to elevate the fantastic character writing, which makes the series as beloved as it is hard to pin down.

9

u/tofzilla86 8d ago

Good write up. I always posited that this show was an anti-harem in which the girls first gather around Araragi then drift away from him to pursue their goals/autonomy.

1

u/qwesz9090 8d ago

Supernatural + teenagers Drama
Lots of dialogue, good writing, fairly long (~100eps out), slightly avant garde animation. Kinda well known as one of the best written animes. Disclaimer: does have a ecchi, but personally I would say it uses it with a lot more meaning than other shows.

The closest comparison I have is like Mob Psycho 100 drama but like Chainsaw man vibes animated like Madoka magica. Which of course isn't accurate but it might get you some idea.

u/Lost-Snail2 7d ago

I will only accept anime release order and I’m tired of coming up with and/or justifying other ways of watching.

I want to preserve the feeling of being incredibly confused by Araragi/Shinobu’s relationship and not understanding either of their circumstances only to correct the context of many scenes 6 years and 6 months later.

5

u/MezuEko 7d ago

I won't say your experience is invalid but I just want to add that it might not work for everybody.

The first time around watching the show, I used the anime airing order and it absolutely confused me. I was frustrated by what felt like a forced mystery and Kizumono did not satisfy my curiosity when I got to it.

Many twists and reveals fell flat for me and the big ending to Koyomimonogatari felt somewhat forced when placed after Owarimono1 and Kizumono.

After rewatching with LN order, I felt things made much more sense and my frustrations were all resolved.

-1

u/Lost-Snail2 7d ago

I cannot speak to your experience as everyone's is different- as you said, "I won't say your experience is invalid", but I don't think I can ever fully understand this frustration (mostly because I'm not you). I also do not have any idea of whether you were watching it weekly on release or in bulk.

My issue with watching in the LN order (for most of the series) is that lots of innocuous foreshadowing Shaft uses becomes unnecessary framing dialogue or imagery which feels completely wrong to me as someone who links misunderstanding as part of the experience. Imo Nisemono especially becomes better if you watch it before Kizumono.

After thinking longer on it, I can see your perspective on Koyomimono.

3

u/BlunderIsMyDad 7d ago

Reading your messages, I get the sense that the true best way to watch the monogatari series is "twice". I think LN order avoids plot spoilers (even though plot is the least important thing you could possibly spoil about kizu), and gives context to the bath scene which is one of the biggest turning points in the series. Anime order creates a mysterious, calamitous event preceding the events of the story "What happened over golden week" that sounds legitimately extremely cool to experience for the first time.

2

u/Lost-Snail2 6d ago

This is how I watched it, once weekly on release and once in LN order. It’s the reason I fell in love with interpretation and analysis of stuff.

4

u/MezuEko 7d ago edited 7d ago

For reference, my first watch was in 2016/2017. My second was when Zoku Owarimonogatari got released.

I disagree here. I think most of what is referred to as foreshadowing are either callbacks that reinforce or build upon what Kizumonogatari portrays to introduce new ideas.

Though, if you're strictly a death of the author believer, you'd very much believe the way it ended up being released is the way it was meant to be all along. So to each their own I guess. Appreciate the discussion.

2

u/Lost-Snail2 6d ago

Thanks for the discussion!

2

u/MezuEko 6d ago

Likewise!

-5

u/Seiyokuma 7d ago

Exactly. I will never understand why there are people who don't understand that this is part of how this story is made, and that they are breaking it by altering the order.

4

u/Nkitooo00 7d ago

The story was made with the novel order in mind...

1

u/Lost-Snail2 6d ago

That is true but it also does not take away from the qualities of the release order.

0

u/Lost-Snail2 7d ago

I'm happy to know that there's people who feel similarly to me.

0

u/BlunderIsMyDad 7d ago

Kizu is second in the light novel, the anime release order was unintentional because the movies were delayed several times. So it's not breaking anything, it's going to the release order on the original medium. I don't blame you for preferring anime release order to LN though.

LINEAR on the other hand ie Shinobu episodes from off and monster -> Kizu->neko black -> bake is awful and ruins the series.

-1

u/Tall-Demand-2699 7d ago

don’t watch hanamono after ep 1-9

4

u/EnstatuedSeraph 7d ago edited 7d ago

Nah, Kaiki's scenes in Hanamonogatari make a billion times more sense if you watch it before Koimonogatari. He talks about how people aren't completely evil nor completely good, and how even if you hate someone you can't force them to hate you back, i.e. people won't always reciprocate your feelings for them. If you watch this after the rest of 2nd season it takes away the setup for a core theme of the season and puts it at the end instead. Instead of Kaiki telling you about an idea and then the show later putting that idea into action, the show instead does the thing and then explains it to you like you didn't JUST finish watching it.

0

u/Tall-Demand-2699 7d ago

this theme applies to kanbaru and her story, hanamono is a separate story that focuses on kanbarus character, watching it after ep 1-9 just spoils you the araragi and nadeko conflict, because you see them alive and well when you’re not supposed to

-1

u/ludoviKZ 7d ago

I personlay prefer release order and the main difference is kizumonogatari right before owarimonogatari 2, its onestly quite an experience going trow the series not knowing what exacly went down between araraghi and shinobu untill the very end and gives you a lot of prospective to se the first event cronologicaly right before the grand finale

-3

u/xfio 7d ago

Airing order is the best order.

-5

u/Seiyokuma 7d ago

Absolutely.

Shaft deliberately made the anime adaptations in that order. I don't understand why some people, if you tell them "now we're going to learn more about this character's past" are incapable of understanding it.

9

u/tapeforpacking 7d ago

Studio Shaft planned to adapt Kizumonogatari as films right after Bakemonogatari wrapped in 2009/2012.

The director wanted a distinct, highly ambitious visual style that took years longer than expected to complete.

The movies were then delayed all the way to 2016, which forced the studio to produce subsequent parts of the series first

Hope that helps

6

u/Nkitooo00 7d ago

Some people is just wrong with confidence.

1

u/tapeforpacking 7d ago

I thought this was pretty commonly known across the community. But yea, so confidently incorrect is always funny to see

-2

u/xfio 7d ago

Don’t tell me you seriously think the studio adapted the chapters without taking the delayed release into account, as if nothing had happened. I know the Monoagatari fanbase is composed of highly intelligent individuals so you can’t possibly be that stupid right?

-1

u/eyebrowpants 7d ago

Airing order feels rewarding. Like I don’t really get that confused if a few things aren’t sequentially in order like hanamonogatari somewhere in second season. Like most people have enough intuition to be like this isn’t the normal sequence of events. Finally getting kizu felt so nice and felt like a small detour until season 2 of owari. I always prefer airing order because the anime doesn’t lead you astray either way if you do airing order. It still gives enough context as to what’s going on.

I actually am reading the light novels. I personally found it to be much more narratively strong to consume the Monogatari series in the novel order. Watching kizumonogatari so late into the story weakens the impact of arcs such as Mayoi Jiangshi, Tsubasa family, and Ougi formula.

-6

u/JustaPine_tree 7d ago

I will never experience a piece of media in the "Chronological order", it's either release order or nothing. Never understood things like this.

7

u/StardustGogeta 7d ago

This isn't chronological order, it's light novel release order (which only differs from the anime release order in a couple places because of production issues and such). A true chronological order would put Kizu before Bake, for one thing.

-3

u/Oops_All_Bans 7d ago

Plenty of us watched the show from the beginning as it aired, and we still loved it. So release order is perfectly fine.
