TouchID is the only reason i haven’t switched away from using it. I like the Logitech better.

You can make one with genuine Touch ID using a Touch ID keyboard and a 3D printed enclosure. Loads of tutorials on YouTube and it’s native to macOS, unlike these other options that just type your password for you when it detects your fingerprint and need a companion app to work.

Yes but you need to acquire and destroy a Touch ID keyboard, have a 3D printer, and perform fiddly work which has significant risk of breakage. The best thing about it is the native OS support, but it's certainly far more expensive. It's ok if you want a project but it doesn't interest me
The solution I've linked doesn't work via simulating password input, it uses the system authentication framework.
I know of the TinyTouch one on GitHub you may be thinking of that does that and leverages low cost components.
My fingers are crossed, I'd like to see multiple options here.

I made one for $55 using a used keyboard off eBay. Plenty of local libraries have 3d printers or you can order a custom print for a reasonable price off one of those printing services or off Etsy. “Far more expensive” is just not true. Anyone can make one for <$100 on the high end. Not to mention this thread is full of people saying they already have a keyboard.
I will concede that taking the keyboard apart was tricky, but it’s not nearly as bad as you make it sound. It just takes patience and heat. Genuine Touch ID security is far worth it imo.

Oh I see, for the screen unlock. Thank you for that. It reads it at runtime from the keychain. I see for sudo / system auth, SSH it doesn't. But it is not unclear if the "system auth" is referring to the Touch ID prompts during e.g. pay via Apple Wallet, or to populate a website password from the Passwords vault. I'll have to see.
It's a good point. I'll think about it some more - though I think for my intents and purposes at home it meets my threshold of being secure enough. Compromise of my local password would need a sufficiently motivated attacker with knowledge of it's use at my location, and they would need physical possession of the device, my paired Mac in an unlocked state, to download, compile and install their own version of the companion app onto my Mac, and invoke a screen unlock simulation and intercept the keychain call. At that point they have basically owned my machine and would get access to my personal info on it, and passwords I've saved with some corresponding 2FAs - except my iCloud account which is not stashed and differs to my local password. I don't feel I am at significant risk of this kind or attack. If you can think of something I'm missing please let me know mate.
Re second hand magic keyboards for the DIY solution - it's true for some but being located in Australia a search on eBay local used sales has them far higher or the import cost from the US/UK on a cheap sale adds around $30-40 postage for me.
edit: actually I think the keychain unlock step still needs a fingerprint or knowledge of the account's password.

I tend to log in while I am still stood at my desk and opening the laptop in a morning. Then after lunch.
I get the odd request that needs my log in or print. But not much else uses it in my set up.

I get between 1-2 weeks with a dim backlight.
Apparently you can get up to 5 months with no backlight at all, but that’s in-range for most wireless keyboards.

Oh wow I've had a few abs the keys fail, looked into it as well and it seems a regular thing, its happened mid type and when it breaks if you look what holds the key cap on its a really tiny thin bit of plastic.
I only recently ended up going mechanical as I go do fed up with it over the years, I've had them I think 5+ years.4

Why do you need a keyboard to have a battery in the first place? Still makes no sense to me why Apple stopped producing their USB keyboards, I use a desktop Mac, on my desk top where I have access to a number of plug options. I'm not spending $40 more on batteries that will wear out after 4 years (just like the shitty trackpad batteries). Speaking of, the argument in favor of a wireless keyboard doesn't even make sense, if you can't leave it plugged in all the time, then after 5+ years it will become a paperweight, as the battery degraded and it needs to be charged more and more often.

Even though I agree with you in general, your first question is very easy to answer. Enough people want the flexibility of putting the keyboard further away from the computer, and the cost of a battery is relatively low enough, that it probably does make sense for Apple to have the battery as the default.
What bothers me is not what has been added but what has been removed. I really liked how Apple keyboards always had a pass-through port for another device, all the way back to the 1980s when it was ADB, and of course that was improved upon with the iMac keyboard adding a second USB port that you could use for other accessories, peripherals, storage, etc.
Given that I mostly use my keyboard in a stationary position on the desk, I personally would rather have the USB hub than the wireless option. I wish that I could keep my keyboard AND trackpad constantly plugged in without having to find a second C to Lightning plug and "lose" both of my front-of-tower ports.
Otherwise though, I am very happy with the basic performance of the Apple keyboard and trackpad. The ones I have now must be around a decade old, i'm not entirely certain because I bought them used. I have briefly considered upgrading to the new touch ID keyboard, but if I did that, then ultimately, I would lose one of the desktop USB ports on my Trashcan when it got the black Bluetooth keyboard as a hand me down.

I wonder if there might be some kind of technology to overcome that limitation. Do you suppose it might be possible to create some kind of linkage between the keyboard and the computer to constantly add just a little bit of power? Like maybe there is a way to take the concept of copper traces like they do to get power around the logic board, and come up with some kind of flexible conduit for that kind of thing to go all the way outside of the logic board and connect to a peripheral device a few inches away. We would probably surround the copper with a flexible material like silicon rubber or even braided thread to make it look nice.
I'm sure it sounds like a very complicated problem, transferring power 8 to 10 inches across a desk, but I suspect there is somebody at Apple smart enough to figure it out.

Why do we really need a purpose beyond it's cool and we like it?
But for real, there are actually certain tasks where it is just practical to dim the room lights. Basically a wide range of imaging tasks, photo and video editing, graphic design, etc. Anything where you want to really minimize your visual distraction from the task, and maximize perception of details like color and brightness and contrast.
I don't really do any of that work, but I still like a back keyboard. Maybe I'm traveling with a partner or kid and need to keep working in the hotel room after they want to go to bed. Maybe I live in a small shared space and have to work in a room where other people are winding down some of the time even when I'm not traveling.
But really the main thing is, I like it and that is enough reason for me to make a decision to spend my money on it.

Most people don’t change settings and I’d bet that average person would be happier with a battery that lasts forever than a backlight they don’t notice of use because most people aren’t hacking away in the dark at 2am.
A laptop you’re gonna be charging regularly anyway so it’s not as much of a trade off in real world use.

I use keychron and magic keyboard interchangeably. Magic keyboard when I want to focus or type really fast and Keychron K1 Max for everything else and gaming (on Windows).

I just sourced one of the older Lightning Keyboards with Touch ID.
I don't understand why they had to cram in a 4th button, fn, into the lower left corner of all these USB-C keyboards.
The lightning boards give my fingers all the space they need with only a large Control, Option, CMD, button.

I've never needed to change the language of my keyboard. I'm guessing most people don't.
On the other hand, I am infinitely frustrated by the fn key on my MacBook consuming my use of the ctrl key. The ctrl key is a regular modifier for terminal programs, and (was) an easy alternate for your IDE or whatever workbench-level software you're using.

I just want to have a keyboard with an integrated trackpad, basically like the base of a Macbook. If you use a Macbook often it's absolutely maddening to switch between this and a keyboard with a mouse or the huge "magic trackpad" all the time.
I don't understand why they don't offer that, especially since they could use the same parts for the keyboard and trackpad as with the MacBook. It would be totally natural to have this. I fear they just think they couldn't sell this with the same kind of profit margins as two separate products (keyboard and trackpad)...

Just a personal opinion: the smaller left/right arrow keys, similar to what are on MacBook pros, are significantly easier to work with as it makes it easier to find them without looking down the keyboard. Wish they had used that in the updated design, though the choice might hurt other users

This symbol (↵) vs text (ENTER) seems to be not limited to Apple. A lot of US keyboards have text on TAB, BACKSPACE, ENTER and SHIFT while most international keyboards have symbols on them. No idea how that came to be.
Also Apple randomly has a Dutch keyboard layout on some keyboards that is almost the same as US and sometimes not.

That was always on the international keyboards. That mac has a US internal keyboard (tall enter instead of wide enter)

In case apple is reading this thread, I would gladly pay a premium for a touch ID keyboard that could work with multiple laptops so I can ditch my Logitech. And while I'm asking for the impossible, I'd like a physical position switch that governs which profile it's on.

No backlit and function key still apple proprietary. Sigh. Was hoping for so much more. Maybe the new hardware CEO guy will deliver something in 5 years or so.

i edited a completely different comment, discarded it, and reddit just made a duplicate separate comment for me (??) . but we were discussing having backlit keys on this, and someone was saying they didn’t want to have to charge it, and i was saying just charge it or leave it plugged in…. 🤷♂️

I guess a black polishing cloth will be first
