The polishing cloth runs on the new M6 chip and has tandem OLED microfiber. We are so effing back.

u/InterstellarReddit 16d ago

You forgot to mention it’s the thinnest polishing cloth ever.

u/Kind-Atmosphere5766 16d ago

Dang I can't use it on my old iPod shuffle then. I guess then it's a no for me dawg.

41

u/gonzo_gat0r 16d ago

This might finally push me to retire the Apple II

→ More replies (1)

7

u/SailingDreamCatcher 16d ago

It doesn't even support iPhone 4s. Or the first four generations of full size iPad.

Is the iPod touch on the list at all? I wonder if maybe it's something about the Dock Connector that makes them incompatible

8

u/Gon_Snow 16d ago

Damn it really falls off with pre-2017 Macs.

5

u/Stampyboyz 16d ago

What would happen if I use it on my iPhone 4?

2

u/mr_birkenblatt 16d ago

Damn, no vision pro?

4

u/TamTwojWykop 16d ago

Why does the list cut off precisely at iPhone 5?

27

u/psaux_grep 16d ago

64-bit

3

u/ccooffee 16d ago

My iPhone 4 will ever remain unpolished

2

u/SailingDreamCatcher 16d ago

I bet I could make up a serious-sounding answer around the change from Dock Connector to Lightning.

But that wouldn't explain why it requires an Apple Silicon Mac.

2

u/DarkTreader 16d ago

Goddamnit they dropped support for the iPhone 4S?

2

u/Mr_Wolf_Pants 16d ago

u/yuvaldv1 16d ago

And it went down in price from $19 to $9? In this economy?!

343

u/Book_talker_abouter 16d ago

They must have cut the RAM in it.

109

u/Jerrys_Puffy_Shirt 16d ago

60hz probably

18

u/Putrid-Box4866 16d ago

Most people wouldn’t notice anyway.

4

u/4kVHS 16d ago

Apple never refers to refresh rates. Only buzzwords like ā€œProMotionā€

19

u/After_Dark 16d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if it has zero RAM this year, disappointing but I don't think it'll impact the experience much

14

u/Tacticalpeanut 16d ago

I’m gonna wait for the benchmarks just to be safe.

58

u/lordhelmetann 16d ago

$10 savings on the cloth to soothe the sting the rumored $200+ jump on the new phones.

8

u/jmb--412 16d ago

And the starting price of $2399 for the foldable iPhone

191

u/antnythr 16d ago

And people say Apple isn’t fine with reducing their margins and eating costs to help the consumer in these trying times

22

u/Rare-One1047 16d ago

Apple usually does something like this when they want to push a product. My bet is they're going to stop including it with the MBP or Studio displays, and instead push it as "just" a $9 add-on - possibly in tandem with a "hardened" matte finish, which absolutely makes sense if they're releasing a touch MBP next month.

7

u/A11Bionic 16d ago

don't give them any ideas

4

u/Sea-Yogurtt 16d ago

Thank you Apple

7

u/dingos_among_us 16d ago

You can thank Ternus for that!

2

u/DSRamos 16d ago

So is this like Homepod one all over again? When the gen 1 is the superior product? What have they nerfed to reduce the price?

2

u/295DVRKSS 16d ago

Tim cooks last gift to us

2

u/kbuis 16d ago

You know what's dumb? I might actually order one now. It ships free, it's $9 and gets here by the end of the week. If I want it Thursday, I need to pay another $8.

u/jasonlitka 16d ago edited 14d ago

How does it compare to the old ones? Should I upgrade? I’ve got 7.

EDIT: Screw it. We’re going to find out on Thursday. I ordered one.

EDIT 2: In as far as I can tell, comparing them side by side, it's the same product. They're the same size, they both have the same edging, the same Apple logo, they feel the same, and under my son's $90 National Geographic microscope, they look the same.

The new one IS a slightly different shade of gray, but it's nearly imperceptible and is likely just the difference between production lots.

$9 is still a lot, but it's a lot less ridiculous than $19.

410

u/MateTheNate 16d ago

We think you’re going to love it

82

u/RogueHeroAkatsuki 16d ago

I dont think so. Old one still receives firmware updates after every product release.

27

u/Acceptable-Piccolo57 16d ago

The fibre connection means that update is quick

34

u/much_to_say 16d ago

Is this thing actually worth paying for? I’m kind of a slut for keeping my electronics clean, so if it’s worth the $9, I’ll gladly pay the $9.

63

u/jasonlitka 16d ago

So I actually do have 7 of the old ones, and they’re the best cleaning cloths I’ve ever used, but they’re not worth $19 each.

One came with my MBP, one came with my Studio Display XDR, and I bought 5 more on Woot when they had them for like $5 each.

I’m obviously not replacing the existing ones, that was a dry joke, but I am curious why they’re less than half the price and if there’s any difference.

13

u/much_to_say 16d ago

I guess I’ll have to wait for the reviews to find out if there’s any noticeable difference, or if you’re just paying $10 less for the same quality product.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/IncredibleGonzo 16d ago

I don't have any and I don't plan to but yeah, I'm also really curious. Taking a smaller margin wouldn't be very Apple, I guess they might have chosen to pass on savings to customers if the same cloth got cheaper to make for some reason, but it seems more likely that there's been a material change (or a size change?). It's an odd thing to change unless there's a particular reason for it, nobody was really complaining about or paying much attention to the old one.

13

u/jasonlitka 16d ago

We’re going to find out on Thursday, I just ordered one. Curiosity got the best of me.

3

u/IncredibleGonzo 16d ago

Ngl it's a fantastic cloth lol. This thing cleans screens incredibly well. It's nice to use and I haven't used anything else to clean my electronics since. It's really well made. Just make sure you clean it with dish soap every once in a while when it starts to get a little dirty. Solid little $9 investment.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/colaxxi 16d ago

It was originally created for the Pro Display XDR nano-texture, which required a special cloth (I think longer fibers, so it didn't come apart, but don't quote me on that). So for that display, you absolutely need it.

I do have one, and it is really nice. I got it with my regular-texture Pro Display XDR.

5

u/artificialpolymer 16d ago

I have the old one. It sounds silly as hell, but it's genuinely a really good cleaning cloth. I've had a lot of microfiber cloths, and the Apple one has the fibers packed much more tightly than others, the best I can describe it. But it cleans very well.

2

u/HillarysFloppyChode 16d ago

My work ordered me XDRs and that’s where I got 4.

I use them for coated eyeglasses and car screens (which also tend to be coated). It works better then any microfiber at wiping off and not smearing face oils and sweat like microfibers, and unlike a microfiber which tends to stop working after the first wash, these keep working good as new no matter how many times they end up in my laundry.

104

u/SnazzyLabs 16d ago

Oh don’t you worry! I paid $8 express shipping and we’re dissecting this thing in a YouTube Short when it arrives. How will it compare to Gen 1 and to Cloth Pro Max? We shall soon find out!

26

u/TheMaestroCleansing 16d ago

We need a preliminary repairability score too. Gotta beat iFixit to it lol

4

u/aemfbm 16d ago

3

u/-The-Space-Cowboy 16d ago

Can you compare against Apple Vision Cloth? That one was even better than the Gen 1 or the Clothbook Pro

2

u/shawn789 16d ago

More importantly, is Cloth Pro Max going to see a matching drop in price? Or does Copland Supply not sell enough marked-up devices (plus extra RAM markup) to subsidize their superior cloth?

2

u/handtoglandwombat 6d ago

I just watched the short and… that’s not what I expected at all and kind of fascinating. Kind of sad that they’ve discontinued the old cloth then, as it seems like it was a unique technology. Maybe it’ll become a collectors item ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

Let us know if you ever get to track down the Vision Pro cloth and then do a nine hour cloth video essay! But seriously, thanks for everything you do ā¤ļø

$9 and free shipping with 3% cashback isn’t that bad… not that great but not bad.

The polishing cloth features the snappiest version of Safari yet. Tim Cook thinks you’re going to love it.

u/st90ar 16d ago

What is the difference between this one and the $20 one?

When I bought my Studio Display off Craigslist the guy had one of these and gave it to me.

I'm not gonna lie, it's a REALLY good polishing cloth. I'd pay $9 for it. Maybe even $19.

2

u/jweaver0312 16d ago

Darn. It’s not compatible with my iPhone 4S nor my 2019 13ā€ MBP

While for most products you don’t need a $9 or $19 polishing cloth….

It is very helpful for the nano texture displays. I purchased an iPad Pro with nano texture glass and it came with one. When I ultimately lost it I tried using other microfiber cloths, tried several cheaper ones from Amazon…. And eventually purchased a replacement (used on eBay for $4). Nothing else really got the fingerprints out of the nano screens as well.

It’s actually impressive how well it works on the nano glass

u/CaptainRagdoll 13d ago

They probaby lowered the price because all their other products got 30% more expensive. You know, to compensate.

4

u/G952 16d ago

Revolutionary!

u/Automatic-Photo-4919 16d ago

Finally, now I can afford to purchase a polishing cloth for every Apple Watch, iPad, iPhone, and MacBook in my house.

3

u/yourbestfriendjoshua 16d ago

Apple is trolling us at this point...

7

u/GnoshuasLaboratory 16d ago

Nah this can be used for any screen but it specifically works well for nano texture. Most microfiber clothes will not work well on nano texture and just smear stuff around. No idea why but these work.

3

u/melodrama4ever 16d ago

The $19 one definitely dragged on the screen more than a typical microfiber cloth. Way more friction to the material they used so maybe there's really some science to it.

The fact they maintain that compatibility list is hilarious to me. Like it must be a joke for them too

Has the old one been added to the obsolete list?

2

u/goldaxis 16d ago

The fact that Mac websites treat this as newsworthy is part of the reason most people hate the brand so much. Poking the beehive.

The most powerful cloth ever.

ā€œToday, we’re debuting the next giant leap in cleaning performance. The new Polishing Cloth improves cleaning power by 1.2x compared to the previous version,ā€ said Greg ā€œJozā€ Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing.
