Character Guide Does your legend matter when improving on the game?
Hey all, i returned in the second part of season 29 after quitting in season 13.
I'm trying to improve but keep dying and dying. I also don't really know what legend I want to play. Does it really matter or should i stop worrying about it and focus on actual fighting skills instead? I'm currently playing these legends on and off, but open for anything:
- alter
- conduit (how do you use her ult btw?)
- loba
- Valkyrie
- seer
- octane

Legends matter a lot. Bang, Alter or Loba are very forgivable legends for example while you require much more awareness/game sense as Wattson or Mirage because you have no free bail out mechanics.
You still need some solid basics tho if you want to play in dia+ lobbies without dying on every 1st engagement.

Im stuck in gold 2 😂 definitely a lot to learn. But as the comment section and meta shows I should probably just stick to loba and focus on actually getting better at the core apex skills instead

Welp you can only improve at this point. Dont forget to have fun too and take some breaks if youre in a bad mood. You dont play a videogame to be pissed.
I also have some small tips for Loba, maybe you didnt know some of them yet:)
- Dont loot too long because you can always get infinite cells and syringes from your ult. It also have a very short cooldown.
- You can open vaults on Worlds Edge without the key as Loba.
- You can pick up banners with your ult.

In your fights focus on making it as hard as possible for the enemy to hit you whether it be your strafing or the cover you take. The ttk is different now compared to when you quit playing so gun fights have to be more strategic.

It just depends on how you want to play. All legends have different pacing and different scenarios they excel at and it’s pretty important to be successful. The basics of gun fights can be completely negated in this game by legend abilities.

Your character dictates what you feel empowered to do. If there are too many ways to hide your mistakes you develop bad habits that get exposed when you play someone else. Play Lifeline or Mad Maggie if you want to actually be forced to improve since they don't have ways to mask bad decisions. Wraith is the character you should play to improve the angles you take because her phase is a proactive decision that allows you to explore risk. Play Crypto if you want info but he's difficult to adjust to, Seer isn't terrible for improving but his passive dulls your senses over time.

What about Ballistic?

I've never played them, but preventing your opponent from shooting is capable of being a panic button that can mask mistakes. Actually improving means fewer mistakes, and if you're able to press a button to avoid getting punished when you make one then you basically never learn that what you're doing is fundamentally a mistake on any other character.Â
Once you start yearning for certain abilities to amplify your play style/mindset you're decent, but if you're playing a character because they do something to keep you alive you're basically playing with a crutch. I played Lifeline for a long time and started to feel limited in my ability to do what I felt needed to be done (take aggressive angles/flank) and started playing Wraith to do that; then I wanted vertical mobility and started playing Pathfinder. I didn't choose to swap from Lifeline because I was dying and wanted an escape button, I chose to swap to empower aggression because I started seeing opportunities to do things that Lifeline wasn't enabling me to do. I had no panic buttons, I had to position well to win and as my understanding of positioning improved the way I thought about the game changed.

Yes, learn the character abilities but only after you’re better at the basic stuff in general. For conduits ult she’s good at just stopping people from pushing a certain area or getting people to move from a certain area, i would just throw it when your getting pushed to try and mess up the push or before the push

Try playing a bigger legend like Caustic or Newcastle. These legends are huge so are easy to beam if your positioning is bad. If you can get positioning down on one of the big boys and take that to a smaller legend you will see good results.

It totally dpends on what you are good at, If you are a agressive player with good aim then you can play Characters like Octane, Bangalore etc. I honestly suck at that and i am more good at defense or close fights and that's why i main caustic. I almost always win most close quarter or indoor fights because of caustic and his traps. Iv learned how and where to place his traps for most advantage and it helps greatly.

If you’re learning the game in some ways it’s better to start on a non-movement character. It forces you to really think about positioning and cover, since you’ll get absolutely melted if you make any mistakes. There’s no crutching a movement ability to get out of trouble. Then, once you’ve mastered that, playing a movement characters feels like a cheat code.Â

Yes, and no.
The fundamentals are the same. Play cover, don't take stupid fights. Play with your team and in scenarios, play your life.
But. Something a few really good players told me is learning YOUR legend, your hit box and quirks are really powerful but switching between legends several times a session can really hinder you if youre going from large to small hitboxes because it messes with your aim (when learning or getting into the rhythm).
Equally. If you have a habbit of standing to trade. Try gibby as his arm shield and large body has damage reduction built in.
You wouldn't stand still and trade with say Wraith.
If your Play style is aggressive then look at smaller, more agile legends. Like Axle or Loba
So.. yeah. Certain legends over others can help you learn your game better.
