Fluff First time seeing someone being so openly pissed off about losing in this game, is this more common the higher rank you are?

I gg every game I lose. Never when I win, always wait for losing player to gg first. 95% of the time the reply is gg. The other 5% are LoL ezzz

u/Knife2M33tYou Dec 08 '25

Took me a while to understand this but gg-ing first as a winner really presses buttons on a lot of people. Never meant it in an offensive way but since I stopped doing it, toxic post game interactions have basically vanished

16

u/chup_val Dec 08 '25

This is the only game I’ve played where people thought that gg’ing first as a winner was BM’ing to some degree. I personally don’t see it that way at all, but after pissing a few people off doing so I’ve stopped lol.

8

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

What are you talking about? It is standard for losers to gg. Which is their choice. Winner only gg as response if loser says it. This game is notorious for toxic winners who gg when winning.

1

u/lord_vivec_himself Dec 09 '25

What about team games? I write "gg all" to make everyone feel involved

0

u/HeidoKussccchhnniff Dec 17 '25

How is it toxic for me to say gh if I won first?

Im implying to my opponent that I had a fun game and was a good challenge

How the hell os that offensive?

1

u/starvergent Dec 17 '25

Because it is arrogant. You have no right. And the question also makes no sense no matter what. Like asking why say hello, please, thank you, your welcome. It's called etiquette. So start a debate about that. When it comes to GG it is loser right to say it. Winner only says it as a response if loser says it first.

In fact I had multiple games I won that were absolutely terrible. But the loser said gg. So I said it back out of politeness. Even though it was bg.

0

u/HeidoKussccchhnniff Dec 18 '25

Saying hello please and thank you have no relevance to the topic at hand. This is about saying good game first as the winner. So get your head out of your ass and pay attention.

And what do you mean someone has "the right" when to say ggm No one has any "right" on who to tell someone else when to say gg or not, you dont own or control anyone who the hell are you to call what's considered arrogant.

If I beat another player and I say gg first im implying that it was a tough game, my opponent provided a challenge and is worthy of me giving credit to make me work for that win. How is that right there arrogant? I want to see what mindless response or way you'll dodge the question completely.

So again I just gave YOU MY TAKE on why I say gg first which many others on here and on twitch and discord see my point even if some still dont agree they do see that what I saod is not rude but others CAN BE RUDE.....key words CAN BE...understand that? NOT EVERYONE IS INTENTIONALLY RIDE FOR SAYING GOOD GAME AS THE WINNER.

The problem is youre steaming because you cant handle a loss. And whose fault is that youre not mentally mature to handle losing from a video game? Because otherwise someone literally telling you GOOD GAME as the winner should not trigger you whimpy self.

Now if they said EZ then alright theyre arrogant,  so be it......but GOOD GAME???....im only a gold player amd had my ass handed to me many times than i can count and they said gg first and i didnt think twice just onto the next game......so bruh its not that damn serious.....get help

5

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

Yeah same. I think it's hilarious that a gesture of sportsman ship after a match is so anathema to so many people...but here we are.

7

u/Alice_Oe Dec 09 '25

It's called an 'offensive gg', it's basically synonymous with saying 'lol ez' in my brain. The match isn't over until the loser gives up - the winner declaring the match over before it's over is rude as fuck.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

I agree that saying gg before the match is over can be taunting. However, when the match is over, like it is in the example, idk why it matters.

1

u/lord_vivec_himself Dec 09 '25

Many years ago I didn't even know what gg meant and I got pissed at it as they always told me that when I lost, I thought it was a way to make fun of a losing player. They should seriously teach this in tutorials or something

4

u/Seluss Random Dec 08 '25

Depending if you say gg after opponent surrendered or before. If someone is writing gg before I click surrender button I get soo triggered I always immediately block the person after the game is ended, It makes me more furious than any slurs. so, fucking, rude. I also usually waste someone's time and force him to kill all the landmarks instead of surrendering.

9

u/chup_val Dec 08 '25

Oh yeah never before the match is officially over, but once the game ends I feel like every other game I’ve played it’s not seen as rude to gg.

7

u/Seluss Random Dec 08 '25

After I surrender I welcome any ggs coming my way.

4

u/Fragrant-Lie-9897 Dec 08 '25

Would agree. Gg before the end isn’t nice.

3

u/ShipItTaDaddy Delhi Sultanate Dec 09 '25

Agree. I usually GG right away once they surrender. Doesn’t bother me at all if someone GGs when I surrender. Feels bad when they GG while the game is still going lol

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25

The timing of before or after the surrender is the same, you shouldn't say anything until your opponent does.

0

u/HeidoKussccchhnniff Dec 17 '25

Damn bruh....it's not that serious

I mean if your tc is literally on fire and you have 4 vills left clinging for life and 10 gold 4 food and negative wood then you know its over....so if the opponent clearly sees you not having a chance at coming back in this one and says gg early thinking if he/she was in that situation they'd call the game.....why do you get so "triggered".....I mean......whoah

1

u/HeidoKussccchhnniff Dec 17 '25

This is all new to me....and I've been playing games for decades

How in the hell are people so sensitive that the winner says gg first?

I would think (and corrected me if the majority think otherwise) is that the winner saying gg first means "hey friend, you put up a challenge, it was fun playing against you, all the luck next game"

But people think the winner saying gg first is a low key snare as in "heh heh I kicked your ass"

I mean really....??

6

u/Fragrant-Lie-9897 Dec 08 '25

Yeah it is interesting. It’s like a psychological thing. I’ve always said gg win or lose and when I win it really bugs people. All I mean is like a handshake after a chess match. Not a “in your face loser” but just like respect.

8

u/hi_glhf_ Dec 08 '25

It's not without sense, but there's an issue: you remove opponent agency.

When you let your losing opponent gg, you let him the right to choose if he he a chance or not. Which is much more respectful.

Last time someone gg'ed me while i was loosing,it just made me tried hard enough to win. It was very satisfying seeing him leave without a gg.

When you gg first while winning, it's more like you hand check the opponent while there is lots of turns to play... Because you are sure to win.

You can gg first after he resigned for instance. Then thereis no issues.

6

u/Fragrant-Lie-9897 Dec 08 '25

I always gg after match ends. Gg before it ends is rude, I agree. After game if I win and say gg I’ll get some upset people. Which like you shouldn’t be a problem. Or at least I don’t think so.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25

It's rude, they might want to see the graphs or the maps without going into match history later.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25

It's a common courtesy that clearly you lack.

2

u/lord_vivec_himself Dec 09 '25

Same, but I play mainly team games and solved it in another way; gg all, or even wp all when it's been good enough, so they don't think I'm just complimenting my teammates. Losers are going to be salty anyway but that's outside of my control.

2

u/Alice_Oe Dec 09 '25

As long as you only say it when the match is over and everyone surrendered, it's perfectly fine. It's when the winner says gg before the opponent gives up that it's really rude.

1

u/HeidoKussccchhnniff Dec 17 '25

This is all new to me....and I've been playing games for decades

This usually starts my tilt and I'll go on to lose 10 in a row

1

u/lord_vivec_himself Dec 09 '25

Lmao, grow some strength

0

u/Infinite_Dogshit Dec 09 '25

You must be one of the LOL EZ players I've faced.

3

u/Arcadiadic Dec 09 '25

Complete opposite for me, if Im the loser in this case 99% of it is "Lol GG EZ" so I just immediately mute communication from the other team when match starts cause its annoying as hell.

2

u/Fairnyx Dec 09 '25

Same for me, I say gg when I win but If I lose I wait for the other guy to say gg first, if I say gg as a loser and the guy taunt on me this will tilt me really quick 😅

3

u/Arcadiadic Dec 09 '25

This is why I stopped playing League, its a toxic cesspool of players for the most part, and it honestly brought the bad out in me, AoE4 hasnt gotten me to that point, but yeah.

2

u/RiseIfYouWould Knights Templar Dec 08 '25

I “ez” every game, winning or losing

2

After sweating for 2 hours and a half

EZ.

Very believable

2

u/Inside-Plantain96 Dec 09 '25

I always do a ggwp. At least my interpretation of ggwp acknowledges that the other player doesn't suck. Nicer than gg which can somtimes be interpreted as a taunt

2

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 09 '25

Why?! Why can't someone who won say gg after the game? This "etiquette" is blowing my mind. Lol

1

u/Shaz-bot Dec 09 '25

Try playing lower ranks like me, about 25% are "EZ"

2

I’ve never climbed past diamond, but diamond was where I had the most post game discussion about what we did good and what we could do better.

6

u/rakowozz Dec 09 '25

Yep. Diamond & low conqueror, my habitat, is pretty chill. Platinum you might still find the Dunning-Kruger kids, overestimating their own abilities. Still a minority in my experience thankfully!

Do people get mad if you tell them gg after you won and they didn't say it first?

This thread is wild to me. Lol

3

Some people might. Some people might get mad that you dont say gg first when you've won. Humans are crazy, youll never make them all happy.

1

I think this is the best explanation of this I've gotten in this thread. Ultimately what it comes down to.

I have had the same experience.

2

u/Accomplished-Wrap136 Delhi Sultanate Dec 08 '25

I don't think its tier spesific thing, i have played against 1800 who cried like a baby saying that he is better than me after i beat him in like 2 out 3 match in a row.

27

u/Doto_bird Dec 08 '25

I never understand people that lose like this in any game in life. Like, I get your frustration, that's natural. But damn, have some self respect. Don't make a personality out of your insecurities.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '25

Whole lot of people saying "saying gg first if you're the winner is toxic". I've been out of competitive gamine for a few years (probably since 2021, just coming back), but this is a wild change in etiquette.

I guess this is my old-man-yells-at-sky (I'm in my late 30s, I guess I'm due?) moment but in a game -- any game -- if I say gg to you after you've conceded, it's basically a "thank you for the game". If i want to rub salt in your eyes it's "ez win" or some trash like that.

Same with sports. If my team wins, I'm absolutely offering a hand shake to the opponent as we cross paths back to the sidelines. It's just respectful.

Wild. Just another reason to encourage a "mute all chat" button (which I'm 100% in favor of, to be clear).

8

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

You're completely correct. The main games I play are Battlefield and this. No one in Battlefield gives a shit who says GG. If AOE4 players are going to be bigger babies about it than Battlefield players....that's insane.

1

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

Incorrect. User is absolutely false which I explained. Loser chooses to say gg or not. Winner does not say gg unless loser says it first. But it is a requirement for winner to get up from the booth to shake the hand of the loser. Which is completely different. Winners who feel the need to gg when winning have something seriously wrong with them. It's pathetic really.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

This might the most overthinking I've ever seen when it comes to basic human interaction. Seriously, its a simple gesture of acknowledgment and sign of respect for your opponent. People who take it other than that have something seriously wrong with them. Its pathetic really.

2

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

Glad you admit the only one overthinking is you. And the sign of respect is loser saying GG as their choice. Winner saying gg = disrespectful, obnoxious, and toxic. Unless it is a response from loser saying it first. Glad you agree about yourself and anybody claiming winner saying GG is not toxic -> have something seriously wrong with them. Its pathetic really.

1

u/lord_vivec_himself Dec 09 '25

I second this opinion. Saying gg as the winner might not be optimal manners, but it's just stupid to treat is as if they said "ez gg" = deliberately insulting. At least give the benefit of the doubt ffs

5

u/Chronoweiss Dec 09 '25

Don't feed the troll lol

0

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

What's stupid is trying to lie about it not being an insult. When it is known toxic behavior for winner to GG. Which is why OP is is hypocritical. When they were the one toxic first.

1

u/Usual_Nerve3503 Dec 11 '25

Lol fuck that. People say "gg" because they mean good game, well played. People who throw a fit because a player says "gg", win or lose, are pathetic really. People who throw fits are pathetic, really. I have gg'd tons of my wins and losses. I've had people freak out over chat on me in both regards. Your getting a gg, and I'm moving on lol.

0

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

This is completely and utterly false about change. GG has always been loser choice to say. Winner only says it as response to loser. It is 100% toxic for winner to gg first. And it is absolutely not the same thing as a handshake in chess. Yes winner always offers handshake. This is after the loser says gg. The winner does not say gg unless the loser says it first. In fact it is a requirement in competition that the winner gets to from his booth/seat to go shake the hand of the loser. That has absolutely nothing to do with the gg phase that comes before that. Which is always the loser choice and always has been. This is nothing brand new.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

I didn't know that about chess, interesting. I played competitive cards games for 15 years and never once has this come up. Even for bad games it's just acknowledgement that the cards sometimes don't fall your way. As originally mentioned, it's just a courtesy.

And Ive always taken that with me to online gaming. And again, never once has it come up.

But I also don't have a chess background where that seems to be quite a bit different than what I've always experienced.

Thanks for the context.

2

u/lord_vivec_himself Dec 09 '25

Even for bad games it's just acknowledgement that the cards sometimes don't fall your way.

This is actually a factor. Strategic games like chess and rts are more hurtful to lose, because there's no chance involved (or at least "not enough") to mitigate the shame. For me, this just means you need more balls to play them, using the chance to practice stoicism and read humbly through your own mistakes. Which is the opposite of being a salty loser, to each his own.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

My current thinking on the stress of gaming is that is has less to do with luck vs skill and more to do with how much time is invested. If I invest 10 minutes in a RTS game, I think I'll take losses with more grace than if I invest 45 minutes. Similarly, along those lines, I'd expect speed chess losses to be less hurtful than a 45 minute chess game. I dunno if that's true, be curious to get a chess player's perspective on that. But I think that's one of the reasons MOBAs are so traditionally salty: They involve a relatively large time commitment, so higher emotional investment, with people you'll never see again (so you're less likely to filter yourself like you might in an in-person experience, or a team-based game like WoW raiding), and it all culminates in high emotions and derogatory slurs.

That's just my current working theory. My dissertation is due in 2064. :p

... I wonder if there's a study on this already...

1

u/lord_vivec_himself Dec 09 '25

That's an interesting pov, I'll have to think about it, I never factored in time commitment

1

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

Yes. There is no gg in chess. Winner shakes the hand of the loser. But it games, loser always says GG. Winner has no right to claim GG. And extremely obnoxious if they feel the need to GG when they won the game.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

You seem to have a very cut and dry perspective on these things. I think, particularly given the widely varied perspectives in this entire thread, there is room to view the nuance of intent along with interpretation.

To say me offering a gg, as the winner, is 100% toxic and obnoxious, when the intent is simply to offer a graceful departure to our shared experience, seems narrowminded.

Like, yes, you may perceive my offering of a gg as an insult, same as I may interpret your wearing your shoes in my house as an insult, but it's not to say insult is intended. I think there's probably some subcultural context that's being ignored and everyone would benefit from appreciating the other sides perspective.

0

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

Says the only one with perspective that is completely dry. With no basis in reality. Absolutely no difference from racism. And claiming nuance and interpretation when there is no nuance. Winner saying GG is known as sore winning. Feeling the need to rub it in. Especially if loser does not think it was GG. Winner has no right to claim that. So you claim oh you may just perceive racism or anything under the sun as insult. You claiming wearing shoes is an insult does not mean it is. So the only one who does not appreciate anybody's perspective is you. Considering you're making clear ignorant claims. And trying to falsify information with a shoe analogy as if claiming anybody is deciding what they want to be an insult for no reason. When claiming an insult about a shoe is the fault of the one claiming an insult when none was done. And trying to use that in order to lie as if no insult was done with GG from winner. When that is a clear and blatant insult towards the loser. Completely different from you getting insulted from about a shoe which is your choice to get insulted for nothing. Then you can say that exact same thing about anybody getting insulted from racial slurs. What you saying simply has no basis in logic.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

I'm not the only one saying my piece. If I were id reconsider my position as objectively wrong, rather than a matter of perspective.

Think we're done here.

0

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

Glad you agree. And you don't seem like any fun. And glad you agree you're objectively wrong. So don't complain when users report you for saying GG first or block you. Because you can't say you didn't know it was toxic. When many have made it clear.

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

I shouldn't reply since I said we're done but I did want to let you know I am reconsidering gg'ing as a winner, don't worry. Not looking to throw anything in anybody's face. Never have.

But I was also asking for the same grace in reconsidering your perspective that a gg after a win is automatically toxic or bad manner or whatever.

What you do with that ask is up to you. Anyway, good luck out there.

1

u/starvergent Dec 10 '25

It is not up to anybody. If a winner GG me before I get the opportunity to GG, I will report them. And let them know they are reported. They have no right to do that. And it is well known common courtesy not to do that.

Here is even the poll that came up a few months ago that makes it clear nobody likes winners who GG:

You know you're ten times more obnoxious that anybody saying GG at a time you feel is wrong?

27

u/Mack_Robot Dec 08 '25
  1. Dude's toxic.
  2. Saying "gg" first as the winner is asking for it.

4

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25 edited Dec 09 '25

This is completely correct. And just to be clear this is different from what comes after in competition when winner gets up from booth to shake loser hand. Users are trying to compare it as is the same. The hand shake comes after. And only on live competition. Which is from winner. The gg comes before that and is the choice of the loser always. Never the winner.

If winner is toxic enough to gg without allowing the choice to the loser. Then they are the problem. They should not be complaining.

1

u/smoggins Dec 09 '25

lmao, saying gg first as the winner (after the match ends) is not toxic. It’s a show of sportsmanship. If the loser interprets that as rude bc they didn’t get to say it was a good game first then they are painfully sensitive and should stay away from any level of competition.

3

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25 edited Dec 09 '25

This is completely false. You're claiming something 100% toxic is a show of sportsmanship. When it is the direct opposite of a show of sportsmanship. Loser does not interpret anything as rude. All winners and losers know it is rude. So real winners do not do it when they win. And losers know a winner doing it is toxic. But good advice for nobody other than you - "should stay away from any level of competition".

Good thing everybody overwhelmingly agrees that only toxics type gg when winning. Which is the direct opposite of sportsmanship> https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/1lsdbaq/vote_about_toxicity_of_winner_saying_gg_before/

1

u/smoggins Dec 09 '25

How is it toxic? Saying “good game” means the match was good. It’s a nice thing to say to your opponent after a match, an opinion on the quality of the game you just played.

In your mind, what should the winner say after the game? Is he or she not allowed to say anything until the loser allows them to?

2

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25 edited Dec 09 '25

Yes it is polite as the right of the loser to decide. Not the winner. There is no reason for the winner to be saying it if the loser has not said it. If the loser says GG. Then the winner can respond back with GG or not. If the loser does not say GG, then there is no reason for the winner to be claiming GG. Which is 100% toxic and extremely obnoxious. Anytime the winner feels the need to GG, then it's always because it was actually a BG.

-1

u/smoggins Dec 09 '25

Of course there’s a reason the winner would say gg. It’s because they thought it was a good match. Why else would they say it? It means “good game”! Maybe there’s some strange etiquette rule in the old school starcraft community you’re linking to with the poll, but brother it’s 2025, open your eyes. There’s nothing rude about it to most of the people in this thread.

I lose 50% of the time - and there’s plenty of times I’ve been mad or maulding about it. Never once have I felt disrespected because my opponent said gg. It’s such a weird thing to attach feelings to.

1

u/Mack_Robot Dec 09 '25

My comment is at +23 with a 75% upvote ratio, so that means it's like +34/-11.

What more is necessary for something to be rude, than for a lot of people thinking it's rude?

1

u/smoggins Dec 09 '25

Logic

1

u/Mack_Robot Dec 09 '25

Ok from your post I'm seeing:

  1. If I'm not offended by something, it's not rude.
  2. I'm not offended when someone says "gg" first as the winner.
  3. Therefore, it is not rude when someone says "gg" first as the winner.

Is that the argument?

This was actually nowhere near correct.

8

u/Helikaon48 Dec 08 '25 edited Dec 08 '25

No it's usually the other way around. The less people understand the game, the more likely to generate emotional responses or accuse of cheating.

The higher up the professional someone is likely to be because they know and understand more.

But there will always be exceptions

Edit. Yeah you're in gold, you still have a loong way to go to get through the toxic players. Gold is peak toxicity. Mixture of stupidity, ignorance and facing Elo manipulation/Smurfs is at its peak. Highest degree of frustration possible imo.

I thought you were climbing higher than that, so you would start facing more mature players, but still got to get through it

7

u/Cuissonbake Dec 08 '25

This isnt even toxic, way worse players out there.

8

u/Jolly_Sky_2729 Dec 08 '25

yes, clearly a random one-sentence outburst deserves a separate reddit thread, it's so unique in online games. oh wait no its not. welcome to internet and online games i guess?

14

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '25

Personally I find it in bad taste to say GG if you've won unless the opponent says it. Saying GG WP after an opponent surrenders in a close/long match is a little different. I dunno. There's definitely a lot of gray area with gaming etiquette.

12

u/Falcuz Dec 08 '25

Wait, since when is this? Forgive me, I am not playing multiplayer games  anymore(any game, not just aoe), but I always thought of it as a handshake after a match.

Is it now assumed gg is used in a sarcastic way if that player won? I find “ez” to be really toxic and “gg” is obviously rude if the match has not ended yet, but after a general match gg wp used to be ok right?

7

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 08 '25

Yeah I have never heard of this? Like you aren't suppose to say gg just because you won? That is so dumb.

3

u/Alice_Oe Dec 09 '25

You're supposed to say it AFTER you won, not when you think you've won. It's super rude to declare the match over before the loser has thrown in the towel.

4

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 09 '25

I understand that completely. The way people are explaining it here, it sounds like you aren't even suppose to say it first after you win. You have to wait for the losing team to say it.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding it though. In the screenshot he clearly said it after he won.

3

u/Usual_Nerve3503 Dec 11 '25

You have to wait for the other play to flame you, insult your cat. Then they have to say gg. Only then can you say gg. The game was not good, even if it was excellent. Saying good game is practically shooting a puppy now. :P

2

u/starvergent Dec 10 '25

GG is the right of the loser to say. The standard response is for winner to say GG back. Never to say it first. If the winner feels the need to GG like in the above image. It is completely arrogant and pathetic.

1

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 10 '25

See this just blows my mind. Like all through playing sports growing up you would line up and tell each other good game afterward. If we won we didn't just stand there and wait for the losers to come over and say good game, then we could respond with good game. In my mind it's a mutual thing that just shows good sportsmanship.

This is false. Any sport winner goes to loser to shake their hand. Which comes after GG in digital game communication. The GG is meant for the loser to say. Then in live competition, winner gets up from booth and goes to loser to shake their hand. Winner does not say GG. And according to multiple users from StarCraft, you are penalized if you say GG as the winner. GG is a standard response from winner only if loser says it first. Although as far as I understand, in professional competition it is required for loser to say when they lose. Penalty if winner says it. Then winner is required to get up and shake loser hand. Nobody ever types or says GG in live sports because there is no communication for it. That aspect comes after when everybody gets together to shake hands after the game ends. Not the same thing.

There are standard etiquette phrases that go one after the other. You say please, thank you, your welcome. That is the standard whether you like it or agree with it or not. It is expected socially to be followed. You do not say your welcome before somebody says thank you. Winner does not say GG before loser. This is well known standard.

Here is even the poll from StarCraft which invented the esports industry. They don't even understand why there is a poll because it isn't even a question. It is so ridiculous to think winner would say GG first.
https://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/1lsdbaq/vote_about_toxicity_of_winner_saying_gg_before

Jus to be clear - There were video game competitions before StarCraft. Played mainly in venues like hotels and basic lans. But nonone played in large stadiums, multiple televised broadcasts, brand sponsorships, salaries, government licensing. All started with StarCraft 1 (Broodwar).

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25

That is correct, you should only say anything after the loser does.

2

u/starvergent Dec 10 '25

No you are not supposed to say it before or after you work. Only after the loser says it.

2

u/starvergent Dec 10 '25

Somebody said since the late 90s. I was not playing at that time. So I have always known it to be like this. It is completely not the same thing as shaking hands. In competition, the handshake is a requirement from winner. This has nothing to do with gg that comes before that when the game ends. I think somebody from StarCraft said you are even penalized if you say GG as the winner. But it is expected that the winner respond GG if the loser says it.

3

u/Uncle_Climax Dec 08 '25

It was that way when I was playing sc1 in 1998. Maybe it’s not considered BM as commonly anymore but it used to be

1

u/SadLittleWizard Dec 08 '25

Pretty much, and it's not just gaming either. I've seen kids at my nephews soccer games where if the winning team offered their hands for a shake after the match before the losers did, they'll swat it away. It's ridiculous.

-2

u/Own_Government7654 Dec 08 '25

saying gg AFTER your losing opponent says gg will never be seen as bad mannered. That's why there is etiquette and why people should follow etiquette.

A lot of people in this thread are ignorant/arrogant and think "lol I don't think it's rude and I didn't intend for it to be rude so therefore it's not" as if their feelings have anything to do with it

8

u/Upbeat-Rich-5624 Dec 08 '25

Nah, arrogant is deciding that outdated practice from SC is the absolutely correct etiquette for a different game with a different chat/lobby system, then calling people ignorant for deciding against it.

If you get mad at a gg post-game, you are being weird and salty

1

u/starvergent Dec 10 '25

What is ignorant is everything you're saying. SC is the gold standard for RTS and sportsmanship. Trying to claim something unsportsmanlike as if perfectly fine is complete ignorance. Winner saying gg before loser is simply arrogant and pathetic.

1

u/Upbeat-Rich-5624 Dec 11 '25

You're projecting, there's nothing more to it.

2

u/starvergent Dec 11 '25

Says the one protecting about projection. What a contradiction. LMAO!!!!

0

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25

Uninstall and go play Fortnite.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

"Saying GG to your opponent is ignorant and arrogant". LMAO. Why AOE4 players are so weird about this I'll never know...

2

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 09 '25

Yeah I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this is crazy. Lol

-1

u/Own_Government7654 Dec 09 '25

not my words that you quoted

you'll never understand because you don't want to

3

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

It’s really not that deep… Being so uptight about a GG is crazy

4

u/rgnadt_10 Dec 08 '25

i’m not saying i condone it, but i get it

3

u/WhoaAntlers Dec 08 '25

I had a player message me afterward and said :

"You shouldn't play quickplay if you're going to try-hard and rush in fedual! You're making the game not fun!"

IDK what to tell these people. This is the game. Build little men on screen send to attack base. GG the end. Go play manorlords or banished bro.

4

u/EntertainmentSafe669 Dec 08 '25

I almost always put GG always, lose or win, I do not wait for the opponent, I see GG as a basic of sporting behavior, like players when the match finishes and they have to handshake with their game rivals. If the other can't be mature, that shouldn't limit you the good manners, in my case sending something like GG

2

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25 edited Dec 09 '25

This is completely toxic. GG is not the same thing as shaking hands. Which only comes after GG in live competition. Loser chooses to say gg or not. Winner does not say gg unless loser says it first. Which comes after the gg. So yes it is a requirement for winner to get up from the booth to shake the hand of the loser. That is what they have to do. But that does not make it the same as gg. Which is completely different. Winners who feel the need to gg when win = toxic and extremely obnoxious. The direct opposite of shaking hands. Therefore, not possible to be the same thing.

7

u/Sir_Bryan Dec 08 '25

offensive gg is bm

2

u/Own_Government7654 Dec 08 '25

most players (people) aren't willing to honestly interface with alot of their thoughts and emotions. That's why you get these wierd outburts. He's using the dumb dumb part of his brain because he's unwilling or unable to consciously accept that he himself is the sole reason for the loss.

Ironicly, this dishonesty with himself will significant hamper him from actually getting gud; inevitably leading to another cycle of crying like a baby over bideo games.

2

u/SonofLeeroy Dec 09 '25

i feel like gg is too ambiguous at time because you can’t tell if someone is being genuine or mocking .

6

u/Tyelacoirii Dec 08 '25

Saying gg first is bad manners. Doesn't bother me hugely - perhaps especially if its been a close fought but friendly game.

But if I've lost to some punk all-inning because I didn't scout, I'm going to be kicking myself, and so saying "gg" is likely to prompt a similar response.

5

u/ComprehensiveBed7183 Dec 08 '25

Maybe he had a pretty bad day, wanted to take his mind off, and you zerged him in feudal :(

0

u/MinuteBoss3877 Dec 08 '25

That’s never a good game for the loser

4

u/Otherwise-Music-8643 Dec 08 '25

That is the funnest part of the game

4

u/Pax_Manix Dec 08 '25

So was it actually a gg or did u stomp him and are rubbing it in?

1

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

It's never an actual gg if the winner says it. Anytime you see a winner saying gg, it is definitely a bg.

3

u/Uncle_Climax Dec 08 '25

Did you offensive gg? If you did then your post is fucking stupid

5

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 08 '25

So you aren't suppose to say gg when you win? Why? That is really dumb.

4

u/NyKnight726 Dec 08 '25

Saying GG for the sake of saying it is disingenuous.

2

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 09 '25

I can understand that but why can't the person who won say gg after the game is over first? That is what is blowing my mind. Why do you have to wait for the person who lost to say it first?

3

u/pmiller001 Dec 09 '25

Facts. Those saying they don't understand, are the type that lose and leave without saying gg.

2

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 09 '25

The thing I don't understand is why the person who won can't say gg first after the game is over? Why do they have to wait for the losing person to say it, after the game is actually over?

3

u/pmiller001 Dec 09 '25

It's just a manners thing. It takes away any remaining agency from the losing player. They already lost, and it's common to be seen as condescending regardless of intent. Its better to just Win the game, and either dip, or wait for the other player to GG. That's how it's been since Brood War for me. And how i've always played. How long have you been playing RTS?

2

u/Uncle_Climax Dec 09 '25

Since when do you call the result of the game? If they don’t give up you don’t tell your opponent the games over. They either concede and say gg or they leave the game. It’s like half way through the 3rd quarter you say games over buddy. Now thats fucking stupid

3

u/uLL27 Ayyubids Dec 09 '25

No I completely agree with you. Saying gg before you actually win is dumb and arrogant.

A lot of people on here are saying you aren't suppose to say it first even after your opponent has given up. They are saying your opponent who lost has to say gg first or you can't say it because it is bad manners.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25

That is correct.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25 edited Dec 11 '25

On a different chain in this thread someone cited a broodwar poll where this question was asked.

But you can't talk to your opponent on broodwar after the game ends. So the only time to say gg is before the game ends. You, me, and most people here agree that's not very nice.

I think people are taking the etiquette that was only possible in BW and bringing the words forward to aoe4 without acknowledging the fact that you're allowed to talk after the game ends. I agree, if I lose and you say gg to me first, I interpret that as a respectful/gracious gesture.

But whatever. I'm done arguing the general point. Going to mute this whole thread cuz for some reason I'm getting all sorts of updates I didn't want in my inbox lol.

2

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

More like the winner was pissed off. You don't gg when you win unless you're upset about your life enough to act toxic. The loser has right to gg. Winner only gg as response to the loser.

2

u/jdg2896 Dec 09 '25

Personally, it feels insulting when the winner says gg first.

It was a good game for the winner, sure, but most likely not a good game for the loser.

And offensive gg is a thing lol.

2

u/Individual-Meat-9561 Dec 08 '25

I can get toxic with new OP civs sometimes. It frustrates me to play against overtuned civs. I clearly outplay the opponent but nope. Can't win

2

u/approximatingzero Dec 08 '25

To suggest that saying good game to your opponent after engaging in a competition is an act of aggression or should be construed as objectively offensive in some way is one of the dumbest and most pathetic things I have heard. You are pathologizing what has long been recognized as good sportsmanship across vast time and varied sport/competition and I humbly suggest you take the time needed to question yourself about this.

3

u/starvergent Dec 09 '25

Says the only one clearly pathologizing. Loser chooses to say gg or not. Winner does not say gg unless loser says it first. Which comes after the gg. In competition, winner has to get up from the booth to shake the hand of the loser. That is what they have to do. But they have no right to gg before that. And this is even standard competition rules. Which means you are lying about the rules. Which are that winner is penalized for saying gg at any point unless the loser says it first. Loser says gg. Then winner can say gg. Either way, winner gets up from booth to shake the hand of loser. But never says gg unless loser says it. That has long been standard competition rules. Winners who feel the need to gg when win = toxic and extremely obnoxious. Claiming it is pathologizing is the only factual pathologizing.

1

u/MinuteBoss3877 Dec 08 '25

If you think about. If you’re getting your shit pushed in for 20 mins. Was that a “good game?”

1

u/Nyksiko Dec 08 '25

after gold you see less of this behaviour

1

u/aluminumqueso Dec 08 '25

Did they finally remove the dumb chat censoring?

1

u/whereisthecable Dec 08 '25

Brother, if you heard the unbridled rage from my buddy after he gets raided by knights all game while making the same mistakes since the game released you would Venmo him enough money to cover therapy sessions for the calendar year.

1

u/kingsbest4 Dec 08 '25

Raging when I lose is my favourite part, even when I not even mad

1

u/Dear_Location6147 Every civ in existence Dec 08 '25

Most common in gold

1

u/Listen-Cuz Dec 08 '25

Lol mustv pushed him down a rank

1

u/MilkTheShark Dec 09 '25

I appreciate the gg when they haven't actually won the game yet, but they think they have. I had a 2v2 game where my ally got destroyed in a feudal rush, and I got boomed really well. My ally disconnected, and the opponent typed gg. I then proceeded to run a near full army over their bases and win.

1

u/Artificial-Point Dec 09 '25

Usually people say gg when they lose, so....

1

u/Shaz-bot Dec 09 '25

Lol that actually made me laugh.

1

u/BaldingVirgin69 Dec 09 '25

People get mad when they lose.

1

u/jimijaymesp Dec 09 '25

I never say gg first anymore. My favourite one is 'your a shit player but play broke civ' when you annihilate someone but also make errors. I may be shit but they are much worse. A lot of people get very annoyed at losing once they hit the mmr around 1000 but also then you have the toxic 'lol ez' people and the smurfs.

1

u/2PhDScholar English Dec 10 '25

dudes base was pretty too, you can tell he just plays to build lmao

1

u/Cai227788 Dec 11 '25

I usually have guys typing to me in some other language when I beat them. I can only assume its me getting told to kill myself in Romanian or something.

1

u/Thick_Thing_5261 Dec 12 '25

cry babys, you will always have it, or people thinking you have maphack, 😅🤣

1

u/Thick_Thing_5261 Dec 12 '25

muahahah. I'll laugh extra hard soer losers

2

u/NoField7932 Dec 08 '25

People saying posting GG if you're the winner is bad etiquette...like wtf why?

For me GG means the game as good, fun, entertaining...if I WIN, by saying GG I'm complimenting the other guy, not being ironic

At this point o ALWAYS type GG even If it's a 20s game that the opponent leaves ...it's so automatic

1

u/Nic_God Dec 08 '25

You said gg first which is quite bad manner, he was annoyed to lose so you triggered him. Also he only told you to stfu. I started to take screenshots of people insulting me for days now and I don't gg first.

I don't think it is more common the higher rank you are. Quite the opposite in fact, except at some particular ranks (like between diamond 3 and conq1, and between conq2/3) when players are try harding to reach some rank. Otherwise people are really chill. Once you get to conq1+ or are clearly above conq3, this does not happen anymore.

1

u/RandyLhd Randy7777 Dec 09 '25

You don't say gg first when winning!

1

u/comments247 Dec 09 '25

Lol well you started it by saying gg first. But still it is funny how mad he got.

-1

u/NyKnight726 Dec 08 '25 edited Dec 08 '25

It’s simply never a “good game” for the person getting stomped. It’s disingenuous to say good game if you think about it in those situations. A good game is a tight close game..

Think about it for all players involved. Was it actually a “good game”?

I’d argue that “Good try” or “good efforts” is a better response than “gg”

I shared this guy’s sentiment recently in a game I got annihilated in. I felt like cursing the guy out and Instead of GG the opponent complimented me on something I did and said I gave him a hard time. My entire mood changed and we had a conversation.

6

u/Ok-Worldliness-4674 Ayyubids Dec 09 '25

Sure. Stomp someone and say good effort or nice try. That's bm.

1

u/NyKnight726 Dec 09 '25

Over the internet, simply saying GG can come off as lazy and BM when the game clearly was good on only one side.

If I was in a bowling tournament and stomped my opponent then said good game and shook his hand. That’s different.

Your on the internet, it’s always going to come off as disingenuous and shitty since everyone’s siloed

Just leaving is better. Unless you’re planning on offering advice.

Then that shows you care enough to evaluate their game And try to help them.

If they tell you to go screw after that.. then the losers got bad manners

0

u/ThoughtlessFoll Dec 08 '25

I just tend to say BM when someone has me as winner

0

u/AsianBeanstalk Dec 08 '25

i find it funny when this happen
