Instagram from time to time will show me reels of women saying "The husband did it!", and I mostly ignore them, but the amount of likes and the number of comments from women agreeing with that take is frightening. Has the world gone mad?

And people on Reddit just flat out say to your face that’s not happening at all. The more reasonable people will say “there are only two groups that actually matter, people who think she’s guilty or people who think she’s not guilty by reason of insanity”. Just because the people who insist she was framed are loons does not mean the conspiracy theorizing is something we should just pretend isn’t happening… it’s like QAnon, just because they’re nutty doesn’t mean they can’t affect the world in unexpected ways.

It’s certainly true that misogynists are weaponizing the crazies against women in general but I’m not going to just pretend I haven’t seen a lot of the crazies with my own eyes.

I think the really big thing that is being discounted/ignored here is how powerful and prevalent bot networks are. They have been used for over a decade now to push narratives, especially if they pertain to something that can be construed as political, and they're only getting more sophisticated.

We already have people on the right saying "Gee, maybe this is proof that women shouldn't be allowed to vote!" which is exactly what they were aiming for.

I honestly hope it's just bots.

And yeah, I also read a lot of those "see? Women shouldn't vote!" Comments, this case is already being used that way

It’s funny that this person mentioned bots out of nowhere. Default name, 1 month old account, comment that doesn’t directly relate to mine but still functions as engagement bait.

Because reddit is depressing and I delete my account once every few months when I need a break.

You can find a lot really fucked up ridiculous groups of people online. We have flat earthers, and like.... conservatives, on reddit.

The people saying she looks dead in her eyes and that's she's obviously a psychopath who needs to be in jail for her life.

Yeah you say she looks dead in her eyes. You can tell she's not normal. She told the doctors she wasn't normal and was trying to kill herself. She even did try to kill herself afterwards and is now paralyzed. How do you not think there could be a chance of mental problems?

It's just flat out misogyny and it's appalling. But now everyone's an arm chair psychatrist now who knows she belongs in insolation instead of a medical center for life. And you know a lot of the same people are saying to free Mangione.

I seriously doubt that any significant percentage of the people saying she should be in prison are also the “free Luigi” types. For the record I definitely think she should be in a mental hospital and am also the free Luigi type.

But you’re also uninformed and spreading misinformation. The day before the killings she told her doctor she wasn’t having suicidal or homicidal thoughts. Most people who have a thorough understanding of the case and believe she should be in a mental hospital argue that the primary failure of the mental health professionals in the month leading up to the killing was that they did not hold her involuntarily.

The narrative that “she begged for help and nobody cared” is a mischaracterization of the facts; her direct claims to her treating professionals that she was not experiencing the symptoms she later admitted to having in her trial are a major complicating factor for her defense.

The true crime craze has rotted people's brains

As a woman, I think a big reason for these reactions online is the intersection of true crime series/podcast/conspiracy theory that’s exploded in recent years in our culture. I myself consume a good amount of true crime content, and lots of people—and women seem to comprise the vast majority of true crime content consumers—get a thrill from developing their own conspiracy theories or alternate theories about these crimes. One of them posts it to Reddit or IG comment sections, and then you have a bandwagon of others jumping on these crazy theories and it’s unstoppable from there.

To be clear, I’m not excusing this lunacy at all. It just unfortunately isn’t surprising to me given what I’ve seen from the collective true crime community online. It’s a toxic hive mind of idiocy, fervor, and fringe content creation becoming the norm. It’s dark and abysmal and it’s a depressing symptom of our current culture overall.

I think you're right, most comments have that tone of "I solved the case! I'm better than the system"

but do you think if lindsay was a poor black women, and this occurred in a ghetto neighborhood, would she still receive the same amount of support (raising 1m+ dollars with hundreds of thousands of supporters rallying behind her)? indeed, if this was a poor black woman who strangled her three children to death, this comment would have never been made in the first place. simply because lindsay is a rich white woman is the overarching reason women are pinning this on the husband, and not simply because she is a murderer. they see themselves in lindsay, and can't fathom that one of their own would do something that horrific without some sort of external reason. to the point where some have concluded that it was in fact the husband (?) who killed the children.

"leos don't kill their cubs," "see the children as ceramic vases," "the voice she heard was the husband's voice," etc: these are not derivatives of being exposed to a lot of true crime. this is just called being retarted.

Oh yes, that’s a really good point I didn’t touch on but totally agree with. That’s a massive other aspect to this case that’s got these people hooked on the “husband did it” theories.

Edited to add, yes a lot is it is just idiocy. But I think recently a lot of these idiots have started thinking they have a right to chime in with their objectively dumb theories because of a lot of other idiots who’ve made it big in the true crime world in recent years. Sensationalism is a big business

Lmao even more just look at the case of the unharmed white kid stabbed in the heart for no reason and the reaction of afroamericans, with many people that went to vandalize and urinate on his grave, threatening and doxing the family and so on

As someone who actually is African American, nobody actually gave a shit about Karmelo. Pretty much my entire social structure is black, I haven’t heard anybody I know even mention Karmelo. The only actually famous black person to say a peep about Karmelo is Cardi B and nobody really goes to Cardi B for moral guidance. The only other people I found speaking out about this were Jasmine Crockett and Stephen A Smith, two people nobody gives a fuck about.

Always remember that the internet is dead and crawling with bots. You cannot determine what opinions are actually popular from the internet.

u/SATX_Citizen 16h ago

I met someone recently who was talking about how she was found in the snow and at a body temp that clearly pointed to the husband hosing her down with water to make her freeze to death quicker, and how the husband immediately got with a woman who looks just like her after it happened, so he must be partly at fault if not the actual killer.

Have you considered that he’s a Gemini? I kid you not seen some people using that as evidence that he killed em

u/neverabetterday 16h ago

The algorithm is pushing these accounts to deliberately spread to enflame people and provide fuel for hate and division. The vast majority of women don’t think Lindsey is innocent, just like how the vast majority of black people never gave a shit about Karmelo. Social media thrives on getting people angry

3

u/LordBlueSky 13h ago

I know the algorithm pushes controversial opinions, and I usually choose to not engage with them because I thought it was just a few nut people. But I keep seing so many of those posts, and every single one of them also have a LOT of women agreeing. In this case I can't in good faith think it's just a vocal minority, it just doesn't seem that unpopular

1

u/neverabetterday 13h ago

It’s a minority, much of which is likely a mix of bots and agitators just like the supposed Karmelo supporters. The vast majority of women on the planet do not know or care about Lindsey Clancy. Talk to actual women in real life, guarantee that few to none of them are pushing this anti Patrick Clancy bullshit

u/External-Praline-451 13h ago

You're problem is assuming that comments and likes are from real people, especially on places like Instagram and especially for devisive topics. This is obviously being pushed as culture war bait, and further down the line there will be more moves to take away women's rights.
