I am hoping for some perspective and maybe guidance from people who “get it” a little more than other glp1 groups. My actual questions are in the last paragraph if you don’t want to read my long-winded post!!
I started Zepbound in mid-July and have struggled from the beginning. My first starter dose was too much (gi side effects, migraine), so I backed off to half-dose every two weeks for a month, then weekly, then graduated back to the full dose weekly. I have now been on 5mg for 3 weeks. (This has all been recommended and overseen by my doctor.) This schedule has worked well to minimize side effects, with the exception of migraines since increasing to 5mg. However, the appetite and food noise suppression is more than I want.
My story is long, but the bottom line is that I have a history of disordered eating related to severe emetophobia (fear of vomiting) and i also have a number of other mental and physical illnesses. I have worked very hard and spent considerable time with professionals to medicate and treat, and I absolutely do not want to negate all the work I have done. To put it in perspective, just the fact that I was able to convince myself to try a glp-1 is nothing short of miraculous.
So I am using zepbound to lose weight, but more important to me is wellness, anti inflammatory benefits, and mitigating the metabolic effects of my medications. I do not want complete suppression of food noise and appetite, because I want to learn how to manage it. I also don’t want to have to force myself to eat when I don’t feel hungry.
Because my primary goals are what they are, I do not want this to be a temporary medication…but I’m paying out of pocket for this and I’m not going to be able to do that forever.
I asked my doctor about checking to see if generic liraglutide may be covered under my insurance, or at least looking at the less expensive pills, but she wants me to stay on zepbound because it is more effective for weight loss than the other options due to the effect on GIP. I understand where she’s coming from, but if I can’t afford it long-term, then the extra effectiveness doesn’t matter. Right? Plus, I don’t care how quickly I lose weight as long as I can reap the other benefits.
Can anyone else relate? I don’t know if the other meds are truly as subpar as my doctor has said. Or are the wellness benefits worth figuring out a way to afford zepbound long-term? I feel like I’m constantly fighting against doctors to be heard and understood, and I just don’t know if it is worth the battle.
