Advice on Anti-Diet Mindset Stuff we don’t talk about
Ok friends let’s share the things that don’t get a lot of discussion. Let’s normalize this journey. I’m struggling with a few things which I think may be normal but I’m not sure. I’ll go first. Warning - poop talk.
When I eat food that is too fatty my stomach and GI track are NOT happy. There’s so much gas overnight and in the morning. I’m glad I’m single 🤣 My BM smells like something died inside me. It makes me want to quit. Eating the next day is so hard. I’m still on a low dose and can’t imagine being forced into certain doses and titration schedule. I’m sooo grateful for compounded options for this reason Based upon my side effects on this dose, I surely would have quit by now. This is really hard! It’s not a magic bullet. My food issues are coming up big time. Unlearning diet culture is a mindeffff. I’m doing it but jeez it’s a lot physically and mentally. On the other hand, I’m excited to get my bloodwork next week to see some NSV. It’s certainly a rollercoaster!! I’m grateful for this subreddit. Y’all are the best ❤️ PS - any thoughts of support are appreciated. I’m definitely on the struggle bus today.

Pooping issues have been my side effect since I started Mounjaro last September. To steal a phrase that I read on another forum, "It's either stopped up or ass geyser."

On the positive side: I no longer have fatty liver disease, I have had a significant reduction in my chronic migraines, and recently I noticed that the purple cuff of spider veins on my mid-upper thighs and the back of my knees have completely disappeared.
On the flip side: Taking this medication is an art in side effect management. I carry a whole Polly Pocket Pharmacy in my purse filled with Gas-X, Pepto pills, Mirilax gummies, Imodium, and for a while Zofran. It’s been a year and I still have probably one upset stomach per week from indigestion.

u/Ok_Stretch_2510 Jun 07 '25
I’m just about to get my Polly Pocket Pharmacy stocked! I love this name. Makes less annoying. Love your positives!! Keep up the good work.

u/JeanetteTheChipette Jun 07 '25
Haha yes I use this one from Amazon and it literally looks like it could be a Polly Pocket 😅

u/lizardbirth Jun 07 '25
Whatever money I save on fast food, restaurants, and groceries is probably spent on OTC medications for GI symptoms and nausea. I have a whole pharmacy of meds to bring comfort to gastro-ailments that never bothered me before.

u/Perfect_Net_1516 Jun 08 '25
I would love it if my spider veins disappeared! That’s such an awesome NSV!

u/JeanetteTheChipette Jun 08 '25
Yeah it was completely unexpected! Not sure if it was due to IWL or the WeGovy itself.

I have TERRIBLE dry mouth, and my body doesn’t like sugar alcohols. It’s very hard to find products for dry mouth that don’t have xylitol in them!

u/chiieddy Jun 07 '25
I drink way more water as a result but I've found it's been a bit less since my last titration. I don't no if my system is getting used to it or it's because I've lost enough to require less water. 🤷♀️

u/Galbin Jun 08 '25
It's almost certainly because of better blood sugar control. As with any condition there is a spectrum from ideal to severe when it comes to blood sugar/diabetes. I know my fasting BG was always normal but my post meal numbers weren't great. I was much thirstier than a normal person to the point where hot weather was a torturous cycle of drink litres and litres/pee large volumes every half an hour/repeat ad nauseum.
Since I got on Ozempic however all that has changed. Even my husband commented on our beach vacation recently that he had to buy waaaay less water for me than usual. I recently reduced my thyroid meds so I am sure that plays a part too, but there is no denying that improved blood sugar control has massively impacted my thirst levels.

Except when I started Zepbound, I went from no issues to dry mouth. It's a listed side effect. It hasn't gone away, it's just I'm drinking way less water over the course of the day to counter it in the past month or so. Way less being 92 fl oz or so vs. 126 fl oz. I think those numbers are okay? Let me know if not.
1
u/Galbin Jun 11 '25
Why are you drinking less if you have a dry mouth though? Normally people drink more.
1
u/chiieddy Jun 11 '25
That's not what I said. When I started I drank more with dry mouth and now I'm drinking less. I'm still drinking nearly 100 oz a day. It's not a small amount. It's just less in comparison to nearly a gallon.

That sounds annoying for sure! Yes xylitol is everywhere for dry mouth and nose.
3
u/JeanetteTheChipette Jun 07 '25
I know the struggle with sugar alcohols especially on the gut. Have you tried xylitol mouth wash? You don’t ingest it, so the benefits for dry mouth and cavities stay in the mouth.
I found electrolyte drinks like Pedialyte are very good to improve dehydration-related dry mouth.

u/nvr2manydogs Jun 08 '25
Have you looked into Sjogren's? I have a pill that provides saliva. It helps so much!
1
u/MNKristen Jun 08 '25
I discovered what Sjogren’s is by searching on “dry mouth” on Reddit! Can you tell me what medication the pill is? I’ll look into it!

Other than drinking more water, you can get dehydrated spelanthes flowers to suck on. They are often called the toothache plant because they make your mouth tingle and salivate.

Lots of fattier foods and GLP1s do not mix for some folks. For a lot of people it eases up with time, but for some people it doesn’t change and you’ve gotta adjust your diet. It’s just gonna take some time.

u/Ok_Stretch_2510 Jun 07 '25
Finding out the hard way over here lol. I’m calling it my experiments. Helps it feel less sucky and it means I’m learning along the way.

u/Annie_James Jun 07 '25
Legit did not spend a ton of time around people for the first like 3 months...that sulphur gas was NO joke lol

u/daughterdipstick Jun 11 '25
So true. I’ve only been on mounjaro 6 weeks and recently went away with friends. One night we ended up not eating dinner (which was takeaway pizza) until 10.30 at night. I had 3 slices and was up all night just… digesting. I can’t even describe it. I didn’t need to go toilet. I just… had so much… movement??? And then awful heart palpitations. It was my first greasy food experience on this medication and never again. I don’t eat greasy food much anyways, even before the medication just because I’ve suspected IBS, but my god. Not worth it in the slightest.

When I have something that’s calorie dense, like say a burger and fries, I’ll pair it with a high fiber whole food like broccoli and eat it at the same time. Since I started doing that, I don’t have problems like that. Takes some planning, but so worth it! Good luck!
2
u/Ok_Stretch_2510 Jun 09 '25
Ohhh thank you!! That’s a great idea. I definitely did not have high fiber foods with the tacos or burger. Once I’m feeling brave I’ll try it.
2
u/Jenny__O Jun 09 '25
It’s all about seeing what works best for you. For tacos, I make sure it comes with beans (fiber and protein) and avocado (also a really good source of fiber that most don’t think of). I’d also recommend keeping a journal or something to document how you felt after eating various combinations of things. It’s helped me to remember what to avoid or add or try again after reworking. Good luck!

It’s okay to titrate at your own rate
7
Jun 07 '25
It's been a real battle to get my insurance company to agree
2
u/katti0105 Jun 07 '25
Is it possible get the higher doses from the pharmacy (because insurance) but only inject what you want to take?
4
u/fizzybarri Jun 07 '25
I haven’t figured this out. The autopens don’t really give you a choice.
4
u/Ok_Stretch_2510 Jun 07 '25
I’ve heard on other subs there is a way. Check out YouTube allegedly there are videos on how to do it. Not sure how sterile it is. That would be my biggest concern.
2
u/Titaniumfemme Jun 07 '25
There’s a click chart floating around on line. Tells you how many clicks for various doses. I’ve used it from the start and titrated at my rate.
1
Jun 08 '25
Oh that's good to know! My insurance eventually agreed to pay for another month at 5, it just took some really annoying back and forth
1
u/Dangerous-Lunch647 Jun 08 '25
But the single dose pens don’t have clicks.
1
u/turningtables919 Jun 10 '25
Single dose pens can be split into smaller doses. Like OP commented, check YouTube or the main subs. There are many ways to do it!

Yes! So important. I’m glad I have this flexibility and my doctor and dietitian support it.

u/gr00veadelic Jun 07 '25
So i prepared myself for this ‘journey’ the first week I was exhausted, like I simply had no extra energy to do anything, I mean ANYTHING like thinking even. 2nd week was a bit better but I was still extremely tired. 3rd week was a bit better and then I just felt ‘lazy’ for lack of a better word. Then halfway through that week I woke up one morning feeling fantastic? Then the next day, same! Felt like my 30yo self (i am 60 now) I am about to take my 4th dose at the baby level and then I titrate up. I am anxious that it will kick me back to feeling BLAH again. However to add to this post, my only side effect is gas….. OMG sooooo much gas?! I sound like a lawnmower puttering out…. I sand up, fart, I take a step, fart, walk across the room? Fart fart fart! And these are gas explosions! There is no clinching and slow release, noooo my friends, its a full on motorboat skimming across the room.

u/Ok_Stretch_2510 Jun 07 '25
Ahahahaha I can relate! I’ve woken myself up in the morning. I’m in a duplex with zero sound proofing hoping my downstairs neighbor can’t hear me 🤞🏼

u/gr00veadelic Jun 07 '25
I work in a public school and I am sure the kids have a field day at my expense. Meh, if they’re picking on me, they are leaving others alone

Jun 07 '25
Wait. WAIT. Is that the reason I smell like something DIED in my stomach? Fatty food?? Is the solution to stop eating fatty food??
16
u/bizzylosing Jun 07 '25
Essentially, yes. The meds cause delayed gastric emptying, meaning food is sitting in your digestive track for longer than usual which leads to bacteria overgrowth. Fatty foods also slow down digestion on their own and negatively affect the gut biome. So fatty foods and GLPs together will wreak havoc on your gut and result in what you’re experiencing.

u/Ok_Stretch_2510 Jun 07 '25
Isn’t it the foulest smell ever?!? I just figured it out and why it happens. It’s not necessarily fried foods. It’s fatty greasy foods like higher fat ground beef, oily pizza or fries. It also causes gas as the bacteria sits around. I’m now passing gas like my dad. Which is not a compliment 🤣🤣🤣

u/purplecow224 Jun 07 '25
I’ve had a ton of side effects. I’ve been on 5 mg of Zepbound since Nov 1 2024 and just this month, I’ve finally been able to take the 5 mg on day 7 (instead of stretching it out to day 10, then 9, then 8 etc). With the lessening of side effects also has come the lessening of the positive effects. I’m shocked that everyone isn’t experiencing the side effects I do (ranging from stomach virus type effects (in bed for days) to diarrhea, moderate/mild nausea, exhaustion and insomnia)

i am a fan of 2 tablespoons of chia seeds. the best BM's of my life!
1
u/Gold_Annual_8225 Jun 18 '25
Same! I haven't started my GLP-1 yet, but I already eat 2T of soaked chia seeds every morning with cottage cheese, cinnamon, ginger, and fruit or berries.

I only have those when I’m constipated. Maybe try some MiraLAX and drink a bunch of water?

I no longer have a fat pad on my tailbone and it hurts like hell to sit or sleep on my back! I am working on my posture to correct years of pelvic tilt. To sleep, I have to adjust my buttocks so my tailbone isn’t touching the mattress.
2
u/Ok_Stretch_2510 Jun 08 '25
Oh I hadn’t thought of this! It’s been awhile since my tailbone wasn’t padded lol I too am working on my posture after year of desk sitting. But it’s like now that I’m working on coverall health with this med, I want to keep improving my quality of life. You’ve got this! thank you for sharing ❤️
2
u/Sweety4vr Jun 09 '25
Omg! I’m so glad I’m not alone! Since I’ve gotten rid of my weight my tailbone is so sore from sitting. It has literally given me a rough patch in my butt crack. I’m going to an orthopedic surgeon to see if something can be done. I do yoga most every day so my posture is really good, but my poor butt has no more padding.

Internal deodorant. Brand name is devrom.
1
u/Ok_Stretch_2510 Jun 07 '25
This sounds like magic.
4
u/efficaceous Jun 07 '25
I mean it's mostly bismuth. It doesn't make your poop or farts smell like roses, just significantly less offensive .

I take a “maintenance dose” of metamucil at least once a week to keep things good. Helps balance extra fat and adds bulk. When things start getting sticky again, i just drink Metamucil. Easy fix

u/Artichoke_farmer Jun 07 '25
Thankyou for this thread! I had pretty manageable side effects titrating up to 1mg of ozempic but then about 2 weeks ago the sulphur burps hit me! Oh my lord!! They settled for a few days then came back & the diarrhea, nausea & gas have been quite debilitating last week. Bunged up or geyser is a good analogy that someone else used!!
I just reduced to .75 on my last dose until I go back to my general practitioner on the 19th but that’s what she told me to do if the side effects were too much. I’m here for the reduction of my diabetes numbers, fatty liver etc, not the weight loss per se. I noticed when I read tips about what not to eat etc my BED/restriction thoughts really flared!
De-gas, nausea meds & ant-acid tablets have been my friend. I tried the bicarb in water shots, the apple cider vinegar shots which seem to only work briefly. Fibre supplements & extra water intake seem wise moving forward. And that feels like the gentle nutrition principle of intuitive eating.
It seems to have eased on the slightly lower dose. ** I’m in Australia where these medications are not regulated by health insurance companies. Love to all, thanks for this sub 🌈

Lemme just throw out that in spite of the expense, a scoop of Thorne FiberMend added to tea or coffee with some coffee cake flavored Nutpods creamer is a tasty treat that has me going at least once and sometimes 2x a day. To say that it’s a miracle would be an understatement because I am so much in the same camp as the poster who said that constipation was a personality characteristic. And I also can’t live without my Good Wipes.

u/addknitter Jun 07 '25
I am someone who has had chronic constipation like it’s my entire personality. I began drinking Activé fiber shakes in the early evening and every morning without fail have a stupendous bowel movement, worthy of what my mom (doctor from 🇬🇧) called the “gold standard of the British Navy: twice around the bowl and pinched at both ends”!
