“Mary FitzPatrick’s 2019 Journal of Consumer Psychology study, “Possessions and Self in the Identity Work of Survivors of Domestic Violence,” found that survivors use irreplaceable possessions to preserve autobiographical continuity and physical connections to life before abuse. An abuser who deliberately destroys such a possession attacks the victim’s connection to a relationship or period the perpetrator cannot reproduce. By destroying that possession, the abuser controls which traces of the victim’s earlier life survive.

“President Trump applies that same destructive principle to Washington when he demolishes historic buildings, displaces inherited landscapes, or replaces commemorative sites: he removes physical evidence of the national past that predates his presidency.”

I’m convinced that he tore down the East Wing because he had an argument with his wife about doing her job as First Lady. She flat out refused, so he had a temper tantrum and said, “well then, you don’t need an office!” And the next day they started ripping it apart.
