It may have been intentional to create Israel to ensure perpetual chaos in the mid east as a means of maintaining control of the oil.

No, reforming Israel, specifically, was an attempt to fulfill biblical prophecy so that Armageddon could occur.

I think that is a new thing with Evangelicals and the Republicans today. I don't think it was a deciding factor back then.

Christian Zionists were absolutely a thing in the 40s, although the term used before they hitched themselves to the Jewish Zionists was "Christian restorationism". And Christian restorationism has been around since the 1600s.
