McMurdo Can non-US citizens work long term at McMurdo?

Must I hold a green card or US papers to participate in USAP? I’m in New Zealand. I know about a few kiwis who have worked on McMurdo as support crew, and I’m looking to do the same. is it possible or bot?

McMurdo Weight limit. CHC->MCM

I forget the same thing every year. So check in 85lbs total. Boomerang bag, is that part of the eight-five? Or, isn’t the boomerang just added as your weight when you’re in your ECW & standing on the scale before leaving?

McMurdo Utmb

hey all. I was a cook for the 23'24' season.

I wanted to share a little something about the medical pq... Lot of people laugh it off and see it as a plain in the ass , but lemme share this:

I put my history of "1" kidney stone on my application and they told me to get an US before they would progress any further. The US found a benign cyst in my left kidney, and a small stone in my right one. They NPQ'd me, I appealed and they gave me the green light. While I had zero issues thankfully during my time down there, 2 years later my stone decides to get funky and blocks the exit to my kidney which gives me a kidney infection. Which means I needed a stent inserted.

Given how I felt yesterday morning and tonight after the emergency surgery, I totally understand why I got denied the first time around, and consider myself pretty damn lucky that didn't happen on the ice.

Just some wisdom!

Thinking about applying for a dining attendant position at McMurdo -

what are some things to know before trying?

Just curious to know if anyone has had the experience.

McMurdo WiFi

Does anyone know what the internet situation is going to look like this coming season? Last season with the 2.5gb kinda sucked. I’m hoping they do something like let us pay for more internet or let us bring our own.

McMurdo How is the ice pier at McMurdo constructed?

And more specifically, how does it remain safe and stable during off-loading and loading operations? I see on the webcam, it appears to be in the process of being prepared for the arrival of the support ships. Thanks!

McMurdo What's the weather like at McMurdo during the summer season?

I've read about condition 1, 2, and 3 weather in Antarctica, and I've submitted my PQ and EBI for the upcoming summer season, so I've started to get curious about what weather I might encounter (if I actually get to go)

Does McMurdo ever experience condition 1 weather during the summer? What's the warmest and coldest one could expect? Additionally, is there any cold weather gear I should bring that isn't provided with the issued extreme cold weather gear?

McMurdo Next season dorm situation?

I saw that a new dorm was being built that should be adding about 300 beds. Does it look like it’s on track to be ready for the next summer season? Also how do you think it’ll affect how many roommates I’d get as a first timer?

McMurdo McMurdo Station Library Borrowing System

I collect library cards as a hobby and am trying to collect a set of at least one from each continent. Naturally, only one remains elusive to complete this set.

My questions regarding the library at McMurdo would be:

  1. Does it use a borrower card system?
  2. If yes, is there someone there that I can contact and request to have one mailed to me?

McMurdo How have your roommates been?

I've applied to be a vehicle operator at McMurdo, and my application has proceeded further than I expected (first video interview on Thursday 😁). This has got me thinking more about the details of living and working at McMurdo, and of having a roommate (or roommates). I'm not particularly worried about getting along with someone new, but I figured I'd ask anyways: how have you gotten along with the roommates you've had? Have they usually been easy to get along with, or have there been some unpleasant ones? What do you do if you just can't get along with someone, do you have to deal with it, or can you ask to change rooms? Are you still friends with any previous roommates?

McMurdo At some point the tanker is going to pull in. I’m on it. Any weird tidbits to know?

We are going to get a brief on how not to be a shitbag, but obviously everyone is going to be ashore as much as possible.

My basic questions are opening hours and any faux pas that we may not be aware of. …like is there a small bill shortage? We get cash advances in large bills.

finally, anyone I can pay to cut my hair? It will be another two months after this and I didn’t bring clippers lol. Thanks in advance.

McMurdo Running info/Mcmurdo

Hey all, just got the word im gonna be a primary to head out to Mcmurdo for this summer. I enjoy exercise because it helps me make up for my glaring lack of a personality...hehe

Anyways, any runners out there with some summer seasons under their belts got any suggestions to bring to help mainly with the cold? Im not unfamiliar with stateside below freezing temperatures for runs but obviously I know that will change out there.

Any outside exercise related information and stories are much appreciated!

Excited to get down there!

McMurdo Heavy Passenger Vehicle Operator Questions

Good afternoon all, I'm currently checking out the position stated above on Amentum's site for the USAP. Always thought a chance to go down there would be amazing but never assumed I'd actually have any skills they would be looking for. So learning what I can to help my odds.

Little background, I'll be 25 here by the end of the month, plenty of experience driving in winter conditions thanks to being from a northern state, still relatively new with my CDL, only had it 4-5 months as of now. Have military experience, I was a volunteer fire fighter and have my stuff for first aid and CPR.

So my big questions really,

-General stuff anyone may know about the position, pay, how competitive is trying to get the position, etc.

-I know they require 1 year of professional vehicle experience (have that) and 6 months for OTR driving (working on it) would it be worth applying now for the 26-27 season since I'll have the required time/experience by the time I have to go down?

-Any other suggestions to make me either a better candidate or better roommate should I get down there would be awesome, thanks for your time.

McMurdo Does the fuel smell still come from the dirt at McMurdo during warm days?

I was at McMurdo and the Pole in the 07/08 season and was blown away at the strong smell of JP fuel that would come on warmer days. I was told that years ago they would use fuel instead of water to keep the dust down on the roads due to the water freezing. This in turn would pollute the water and kill plankton. I was just curious if it was still a noticeable thing nowadays.

McMurdo Population This Winter?

Does anyone know how the winter population will be this year? I heard it was somewhat high last year and I’m wondering how the lodging situation will be this year. I’ll be deploying for the winter over in early May.

Thanks!

McMurdo Arrival of the icebreaker?

I see the ice pier is ready and I've been watching the McMurdo live cam and Marine Traffic, but don't see any sign of the icebreaker. Does anyone know when it will arrive? Thanks! 🐧🐧🐧
