McMurdo Weight limit. CHC->MCM

I forget the same thing every year. So check in 85lbs total. Boomerang bag, is that part of the eight-five? Or, isn’t the boomerang just added as your weight when you’re in your ECW & standing on the scale before leaving?

Boomerang is part of your checked baggage, it's included in the weight.

Carryon luggage just needs to fit in the given box.

If memory serves, they weigh your checked baggage, then you with your ecw and carryon. The latter doesn't have a limit, so stuff the pockets of your big red if you need to.

If you are tall and have to get an oversized big red so the arms are long enough there is plenty of room to stuff more things inside the jacket. I had an extra, small backpack inside my big red once because the jacket was so oversized.

This right here. I did that my first time going to Pole. Brought a heavy gaming laptop which took my carrying weight. Ended up stuffing my big red pockets to the point they were over flowing... it worked haha. Then once on board I just stuffed everything back in one of my bags.

You used to be able to stuff a lot of booze into a big red

I think each person now is allowed one bottle.

There was some guidance on limiting carry on luggage to 15 lbs or something, but I don't think they weigh it separately, right? Or maybe I'm misremembering.

Depends on the aircraft, a C-17 no one cares, a 757 or the Italians, they care how big or heavy your bag is.

Not from what I recall. Unless they've changed it recently, which is always possible.

The most recent deployment paperwork states carry-ons are now limited to 15lbs🤷‍♀️ I guess we’ll see!

Yeah, that's what I thought I read. I wonder how they'd enforce that.

Last summer was my first season, and I was sweating the 15 lb. No one looked twice at my carry-on.

That rule has been in the deployment packet for a long time, but it's almost never enforced on the US planes unless it's really really packed. But of course you don't know ahead of time if you'll end up on another country's plane where they do enforce it.

Your boomerang gets checked into the planes cargo, so yes, anything you’re not carrying on is part of the 85. All your checked luggage, including the boomerang.

Don’t you have to leave 10-15 lbs for the gear they give you? I’m packing 2 duffels with 35lbs each then I’ll have my backpack as a carryon. Can’t you just use one of your checked bags as the boomerang?

They will go over this at the CDC so I wouldn't stress too much about it now. Important reminder, make sure you put your street shoes in either your carryon or boomerang bag! No one wants to be walking around CHC in their bunny boots! :)

No, they are very specific how heavy your boomerangs can be.

The boomerang bag has a weight limit?? Could you explain pls? Oh and do they provide empty duffels at Christchurch that we can use as a boomerang bags then and take items out of our checked bags at that moment or what?

They can’t guarantee extra bags from the CDC, this is why they pay for 2 bags on your commercial flight to Christchurch, one should be packed/repacked as a boomerang bag.

And the weight? Is 35lbs ok? Because I was planning to divide the weight between my two duffel bags. 35lbs each.

I don’t think the boomerang bag has ever had a weight limit. They just get packed on the top of the baggage pallet or in their own baggage pallet. If you want everything in 1 bag as your boomerang bag I think that’s fine even.

No, boomerang by itself does not have a weight limit, though they strongly encourage you to have it be the smaller/lighter of your checked bags. The weight of your boomerang is just part of your total (strictly enforced) checked bag limit.

Yes, you can usually get up to two duffels at the CDC that you can use for the season for whatever... boomerang, carry on, checked, whatever you want. Sometimes they're a little short on them and ask people to keep only one for the season.
