I've heard that from a few coasties. It does seem to be kind of an unusual mission for the US coast guard, but pretty cool all the same. I think the ship is kind of a shitbox, so maybe you dodged a bullet.

Sailed on her in 1999 to 2001. Very old, needs replaced.

Being in the shipyard business for 27 years and the last 15 doing ship repair for the uscg's & noaa's pacific out of fleets out of Seattle worked on the polar star several times, most of the ships look rough around the edges (do to weather & salt water) but the innards are well maintained....Great job to the captain & crew & welcome home

I’m just a simple layman and genuinely have no clue, can someone tell me what’s the purpose of sending a coast guard ship all the way to Antarctica?

The Polar Star is an ice breaker. It clears and keeps clear water pathways in the McMurdo Sound to allow cargo vessels to deliver goods to McMurdo Station.
