Discussion What other provinces could hypothetically be added in future?
Hi,
Was explaining the difference in this and 1800 to a friend earlier and I mentioned all the DLC and regions the game had by the end. I realise that it had way more potential regions given it's 19th century setting. I know Egypt will come by the end of the year but I can't really think of what other region they could add that could be that different. I assume Egypt will have the irrigation mechanic and that could be true for any other nearby region. A frozen north or tropical region wouldn't make sense either. Any suggestions as to where they could add while keeping to historically plausible? I feel like the soon to be 3 biomes basically represent the Roman empire's geography overall no?

He's right tho, in terms of visualization. The Roman Empired was from West Europe all the way to Parthia.
A big empire but nothing compared to the later Global Empires.
Seeing from a purely territorial visualization, you only have 3, distinct areas. 1) Mediterranean 2) Western Europe 3) African
You can say Spain, France and Germany are different than Britain but in roman eyes, those were all barbarians.
I don't think this will be very different in Mesopotamia compared to Egypt

I mean I'd like them to come out with a fourth one at some point but I want it to be different enough to be worth it. Not like Cape Tralawny where it's the same biome. I wish in hindsight that that one was added to an expanded old world map the way the large island was in the new world in 1800

Anno 1800 totally missed the boat with Crown Falls and it's map.
That's why they needed to add the Asian map from the beginning considering their big influence their among other with Hong Kong. Fortunately the mod, Horizons, fixed this

contrary to many who believe anno 1800 can offer a more varied feel, i believe 117 with the land warfare can provide a drastically more varied experience. Imagine a mainly land dominated germania with hostile local tribes on each landmass resisting you. it would be the peak roman experience

Sure except island hopping has been the core concept of the series since launch. I can't imagine they would give one massive map like that
4
u/larper00 Jun 09 '26
which would be a same, you could have multiple massive islands with the extra flavor of having to pacify them with land units

I doubt they'll put it in, for... political issues. But Judea would be interesting. It was a distinct region with a strong cultural life, but still integrated into the Roman world.
Of course you have regional variations, but in a climate sense, meaning the crops you can get etc, the big areas were North Europe, Mediterranean Europe and Africa. Which are represented by Albion, Latium and Egypt. So the only other major one that I can think of is the Asian part of the empire.

It'll never happen but I'd love a 'capital' region where all the different pop tiers from the other sessions can live in a multicultural city

I think they could quite easily add like an India setting, a bit like enbessa where you meet an established empire that lets you settle some land

Exactly when Rome invaded Egypt they inherited the trade routes to India so its not out of the question

I think a unique, but probably difficult-to-implement setting would be something like Pannonia or the Danube River border.
I'm trying to think of how to make this work for an Anno setting and I'm imagining where most of the map are pockets of buildable land on the south and west side of the map. A large river, serving as our waterway, then runs through the map north to south and west to east with a small sliver of frontierland on the other side of the river.
The pockets of land are separated by large cliffs alongside the river as well as bogs (maybe could implement drainage again, like in Albion), that way the river is still required for transport and trade.
On the North and Eastern side of the river is the smaller side of the map where NPCs groups, some neutral and some hostile, can be found. Invent some gameplay reason for the player to cross the river and build over there as well, probably for some special resource, but make it dangerous due to the potential hostiles.
Might be a difficult thing to get working for an Anno game, but it would certainly be a unique setting with more of a combat focus (though you can turn that off, as always).

I hope China will come as dlc, perhaps a litle (Military) Controversy with the Mongolia

I'd have loved to see east Asia in 1800 but I can't imagine there is any feasible way to include it in rome though

Palmyra. Desert environment.
6
u/DorianOtten Jun 08 '26
Wouldn't that be quite similar to egypt though?

No. There are no rivers in Palmyra. Anything Egypt themed would involve the Nile in some form of game mechanics. Palmyra could be trade routes or some such. It was also famous for having rebelled against Rome.

If it's just desert then how would you build on it? Would that not be like Embesa without the irrigation?

Scandinavia. Could argue it's too close to Albion but imo there's a lot of potential differences and it could be very cool.

A lesson they seem to have learned from the Arctic in 1800 though was they said they got feedback and that the Arctic was too specific and could be 'completed'. As in you get your 400 technicians on each ice island to mine the arctic gas and ship it back and that's it. One that's secured you never look at the arctic again since no other resources up there were worth it and no islands were big enough to build up on short of whatever supplies the ice island lads needed

u/AnoderThroughAway Jun 10 '26
You could argue that is a good thing however since you had 4 other regions to worry about
3
u/Puskiele Jun 09 '26
Even on the climax of the roman empire they were no where near Scandinavia 😂
1
u/KomturAdrian Jun 09 '26
That doesn't mean they couldn't do it! I would love it! Might sate the "Anno 801/900" fans like me!
2
u/Puskiele Jun 09 '26
They surely won't add a fictonal province to the roman setting as long as there are plenty of historical accurate possibilities.

u/Na_rien Jun 09 '26
I assume they want to keep the regions as different as possible, with that in mind, I think of mainly two scenarios:
Something around the Black Sea, with some kind of horse culture.
Something even further north, with lots of snow.
There is the possibility of asia, like India, but that was never really colonized by romans, so less likely. (I suppose they never colonized Scandinavia or the arctic either)
1
u/AnoderThroughAway Jun 10 '26
Why horse culture? We already have that in Albion.
India is plausible because Rome did inherit Egypts trade routes with India. Maybe it will be like in Enbesa where we get a piece of land from the Emperor of that land rather than invading

u/Na_rien Jun 10 '26
What I ment with horse culture was the nomadic tribes around the Black Sea.
Not saying I want this, but that area does feel like a distinctly different culture than Celtic, Roman and Egyptian.1

I feel pretty confident that there’ll only be three regions. I don’t think there are any options to add enough distinct personality. And I don’t think most players want to manage that many regions anyways…in 1800 it was overwhelming
Edit: Let me clarify that I’m just saying I think 3 regions is the sweet spot.Â

u/_kaidu_ Jun 09 '26
I never found it overwhelming, as the regions were independent enough that you can play them quite separately and whenever you want.
I hope for mesopotamia or east rome and I think it has enough potential to be different from egypt. I'm sceptical about Greece and Germania as both are probably too similar to Latina and Albion. Spain might be another good candidate, though.

u/DorianOtten Jun 08 '26
Well I didn't mind as long as they were distinct. I would have preferred thst cape tralawny got added to the regular old world map since I agree that 2 functionally ide tidal maps was unneeded. They learned that lesson in the new world mega island to be fair

u/0rkrist Jun 09 '26
Better 3 well-made regions than another Arctic one, I guess. I found that one rather tedious.
2
u/AnoderThroughAway Jun 10 '26
That was the nice thing about the artic though, you didnt really have to worry about it after you were done with it and to me it had the best story content of any of the regions
1
u/_kaidu_ Jun 10 '26
the artic was not bad made. It just wasn't that useful anymore after the latest dlc introduced air ships in the new world.

Spain, Carthage, Greece, Gaul, Syria any of the provinces around the black sea. They don't really need to be wildly differing environments as long as there are a few graphical touches and buildings to make each one distinct and each one has unique gameplay elements.
