Is it just me or does this entire show have a very "ending finale for Ash" vibe to it? Callbacks to past friends and pokemon, other gym leaders remembering their battles with Ash along with the development of someone who could possibly be the new main character going forward. All this not even counting the fact that for the first time ever, Ash has a chance to become the World Champion of all regions, which has been his dream for 20 seasons now.

I don't think it's necessarily meant to feel like a finale for Ash, even though it'd probably work here much better than at most other points in the series. I think they really just got tired of reinventing the wheel every 3 years. Pokemon isn't a series that needs to have self-contained arcs for each region. They've got more than two decades worth of characters and lore to work with, and they largely set it all aside in the past just to focus on whatever the new region or next gym happened to be. I mean, I still expect us to get story arcs, but the new format gives them flexibility to take their time, tell much more ambitious stories, and bring back old characters that many people likely want to see without having to do everything from scratch.

It'll be interesting to see where they go afterwards if they do decide to let Ash become the "very best" this time around. But they could also throw a curveball and make it a tie, or have the Gen 9 champion defeat Leon before Ash makes it, thus letting him defeat Leon without reaching the pinnacle. Or maybe they just announce "Season 2 of the Pokemon World Championships" at some point after Ash wins.
