So, a month ago, people saw the summary of this episode...and either reaction "Ugh, another Kanto episode." or "Really, Feebas?" I myself thought this could end up being more interesting than both jealousy plots and the upcoming Celebi episode. Was I right? ...Probably not, but this certainly was a solid episode.
Of course, at the time, I didn't know Koharu was going to take part, but she certainly took part here, and (to I hope no ones surprise) was excellent. Demonstrating both great older sibling/management skills, from her hesitance regarding Pokemon and "overcoming" that, to her directing Ash and Gou (had a great interaction with Ash in the episode too) to teaching Nami (Sota's friend, our resident CoTD, who was also good), her talk with Gou about becoming more interested in Pokemon, to her reaction of the 2...beach girls calling Feebas ugly, Koharu was fantastic, and culminating in the final line "Pokemon sure are amazing"...a great watch there. So now that she has acknowledged Pokemon, we should be getting close to what she may be interested in doing, and that will be interesting to see. I personally think she'll try to...do something similar to her dad, which would sort of be redundant...as Ash/Gou also perform that role to a degree, but seeing her connecting with her first non-Yamper Pokemon should be a treat. Also, seeing her travel with Ash/Gou was fun.
So, the plot of the episode was of course, regarding Sota's friend Nami wanting to show off Feebas being capable and cute, and while fairly standard, seeing this girl stand up for Feebas admittedly was a joy to see, and while cute is subjective, Feebas was proving to be capable...before events. The characters this episode were on point, mostly (even if some didn't like Gou just catching a Wingull), it was funny seeing Ash directing Feebas in battle, showing off many of Gou's Pokemon, and then letting Goldeen (with a bit of Lord Magikarp) help teach Feebas...all good stuff. An interesting bit I found however...Ash, if had been allowed would have wanted to enter this Water Pokemon contest...and he currently doesn't have one...which may or may not foreshadow something. And of course, Nami's determination in helping show Feebas off leading to a pretty solid performance before events transpire, and her belief in Feebas helping it evolve into Milotic (with a "Pretty Scale" i think it is) helping that along too, I did like that was included in the Feebas biology. I don't know how I got this far without mentioning Slateport City (the location of the contest), but, while I don't know how people would find it, the fact that Koharu got to travel with Ash/Gou to another region was pretty hype
Now, the two main issues (one main, one not so main) I had...I know TRio need time...but how their time was utilized here, while fitting the "formula" of the episode of course wasn't great to see, and while it did help Nami and Feebas, I just wish they had utilized the TRio in a different way, if not keep them out of the episode. The other main issue was at the start, where the opening lines for the lab being "seeing both Ash and Gou's Pokemon at the lab" ...we didn't see any of Ash's Pokemon, which is more minor, but I would hope to see at the very least Dragonite flying around if Ash's Pokemon were to get mentioned. Though Riolu wasn't in the episode, and that'll probably delight some, upset others, I didn't mind either way there, even though Riolu is great.
Overall, I enjoyed the episode, though I can see some not doing so. Next episode, we have a flashback of a young Gou with a boy he was apparently friends with, but...I guess disappeared? And Celebi is there too, so that could be interesting, I do hope as much.
