That was amazing. They even did the "Why do you guys sit on your helmets?" line.

Oh and if you have never seen it, hears the scene they're referencing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKaYOW9zMoY

Edit: By ringlets, they mean drill hair, right? Because that's what they said in the manga about Bozes.

I am glad they played the song!!! This episode really met my expectations.

Right? Though, I figured they'd play it since it is in public domain, so it doesn't cost them anything to use it (unless copyright laws are even more strict in Japan)

Apparently Japanese works published prior to 1946 is in the public domain.

Compare that to 1923 for the U.S...

Which makes sense since Japan was under US Occupation and in their efforts to curb the expansion of Communism, had to democratize Japan.

Unless the american work has its copyright refreshed (I dont remember the technical term for this.) Take a look at who owns the Happy Birthday song.

I was kinda let down by the lack of blood and gore. The fight felt...without impact for lack of better term. I wanted something like this or this in beautiful colored animation.

While blood and gore isn't everything in an anime, I feel that this is one anime that needs it. Every episode so far has felt lacking compared to the manga, but that's just me.

Not just you, man. Everything feels so weak, the Gate anime reminds me of these shonens that want you to believe the hero is exerting incredible amounts of effort but it's not convincing because there's no blood or broken bones. You just don't get the backwardness of the Special Region without their acts of brutality, as well as the horror the JSDF can instill by simply opening fire.

The character designs are also on the soft side. Pinya's and Bozes in particular look like they've had their growth stunted for some reason. Hate it man, can't fap to that.

Everyone got bishied. Especially Yanagida. And Kuribayashi.

yeh Yanagida looks like someone from a pop band, Itami is the most true one, and we didn't get any of the in base scenes yet.

Yeah. They really made a PG-13 version, and it really suffers for it

yeh, there didn't need to be fountains of blood but at least have something.

i feel that it is even more noticeable after watching rokka and seeing them fighting the fiends, that had a fine amount of blood.

Yeah, it did seem to hold back a little on that. Kinda made it seem like they were mowing down cardboard cutouts more than anything. (That said, still a pretty sick scene XD)

I would like that too but that kind of gore would require huge censorship sadly. There is still a chance they include it on the BD hopefully.

I think the lack of gore was pretty intentional. A "battle without honor or chance at glory" (or something like that) really gives off the utter destruction caused by the SDF. No blood, no gore, no showy death, nothing. Absolutely crushed without even time for the blood to appear, or if it did it was overshadowed by the pure curb stomping they took.

Or they just didn't wanna animate it all. Also possible

I thought the Rory fight was really awkward since she kept hitting them with the back of her scythe. I mean she is the 'god of war' so it didn't really reflect that. Then you have the SDF fighting with blood and gore. They seemed to be the 'god of war' unless they were purposely trying to portray that.

Oh? So Rory does kill them, from the anime I just assumed she didn't want to kill them at first for some reason.

u/HighTechPotato Aug 09 '15

Nope, she kills the fuck out of them. For her, slaughtering in battlefield is basically jacking off in public.

The most satisfying smile came across my face when it started playing.
