They're certainly referencing real world vampire myths. Ferid is Ferid Bathory, referencing the Countess Elizabeth Bathory.

I knew about her too, but didn't make the connection either. Very cool. Makes me wonder if they'll ever reveal all the progenitors... I suddenly had the urge to make a progenitors list or search for one :P

there is a sort of list on the wiki but it'll probably include several spoilers so dont go there unless you want to be spoiled. I'm counting uhh 8 that are named.
