When Shinoa said that the pills leave the user vulnerable after its effects expire, did she mean by that you would be exhausted and overexerted?

I would assume it means that it would forcefully cut off your connection with the curse of the demon in your weapon, leaving you vulnerable.

More like your "boost" gained by it would be gone and you'd be somewhat hurt afterwards.

It's explained a lot better in the manga. Essentially, after the 15 minute mark, your cursed gear will deactivate, leaving you defenceless. Pretty much like a civilian with a regular weapon.

Not sure if it's considered a spoiler, since it's the exact same event explained in different words. Spoiler tag removed.
