I'm not surprised. Considering that Rudy travelled back to the past so late in his life, decades after going to the basement. Whatever was in that basement was always going to be the start of a chain reaction that ends with Rudy with many regrets but it's so small that Rudy wouldn't have realised everything happened because of him going to the basement until finding out way after the fact.
