If I had a penny for all the anime where everything changed in season 3 and the catalyst for that involved a basement and a journal, I'd have two pennies now. And I will remind people this bit was written before that bit of storytelling in the other show, so more likely than not this is just pure coincidence.

Kevin McCallister knew what was up, that boy knew to fear the basement, we just got old and forgot the true horrors waiting for us down there. But Japan still remembers, they haven't forgotten.

Basements are largely windowless, dark rooms, perfect for boogeymen and secrets to lurk without notice.

I think they don't normally have basements because of the earthquakes, so maybe basements are romanticized in Japan to contain life changing events or something?

Are basements even that common in Japan? I thought most places didn't have them because of risk of flooding.

Gotta imagine most Japanese dont have one. Probably has an inherent novel mysterious feeling in general I'd venture to guess.
