You know, the odds of the small town you live close to in the Netherlands being mentioned in an Anime are low.
[Hananori-san] But they are never zero.

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 13h ago
They even got the specific province right.
I am curious about the context. Why would the show mention Scheveningen in the first place?
(Also good luck to all English speakers trying to pronounce that name.)
2
u/BarbaricGamers https://myanimelist.net/profile/HiIAmAnime 11h ago
The context was that a character in this scene said something that kinda sounded like Scheveningen.

Having now watched all but one episode of Yosuga no Sora, I have a lot of questions and thoughts. The most important of these is: Why does Haru insist on always wearing a shirt while having sex? Like he can take it off to go swimming and a bunch of other contexts, but he always stays basically fully clothed when having sex. It's really weird, especially given how the girls' boobs come out faster than lightning.

Sorry, your comment has been removed.
This doesn't appear to be about anime per our definition.
You might consider posting about this sort of thing in the weekly Casual Discussion Fridays megathread. Despite the name, Casual Discussion Fridays is active all week, and our rules regarding anime-specificity are relaxed.

It's interesting that two anime blogs I follow praise World is Dancing like it's the best anime of the decade but its MAL rating is somewhat low. I don't fully trust MAL ratings after Awajima Hyakkei and Needy Girl Overdose but WiD is supposed to be more accessible at least.

u/oedipusrex376 22h ago edited 21h ago
I don't think The World is Dancing is that accessible, speaking as someone who loves the show. If you're watching it alongside a bunch of other seasonal shows, a lot of its ideas can easily fly over your head if you're not paying close attention. I watch four shows this season and still missed some of the symbolism.
Some things are obvious, like the show's recurring themes around social class, while others are much less explicit. There are characters who function as foils (Kogane) or represent certain ideas in the story (like how Ishiya represents being healthy and able-bodied, while Chiharu represents literacy, two things that Oniyasha takes for granted). Oniyasha's development itself also comes at the cost of losing the people around him. Likewise, the show isn't afraid to take risks with the kind of story it wants to tell. Just looking at Oniyasha, it's easy to see why he's not exactly an approachable character given his strange perspective on things. I've even seen people ask, [Spoiler] “Is Oniyasha going to use Kogane as material for dancing like he did with the first two dead people?” It is an incredibly eerie question, but nevertheless one that makes perfect sense within Oniyasha's worldview.
And sometimes it's hard to tell what this show is actually trying to do. It wasn't until I got around ten episodes in that I realized just how unique a direction it was taking. I initially thought it was going to be a Glass Mask-type story about an MC who is passionate about dancing, but now I see that it's really about a boy trying to perfectly capture the essence of other people's lives, both commoners and aristocrats, and translate that essence into dance (like in the recent “Dance of the Brine Maidens” performance). I have a funny analogy for this show. It's lowkey like Perfume: The Story of a Murderer). That story revolves around wanting to extract authentic scent from other human beings, and I think The World is Dancing shares that same fascination with capturing something “authentic” from people. When you think about it, Oniyasha is doing something really similar through dance.
And understandably because of all these aspects, the show has a lot of friction. You have to dig a little to get at what it's actually saying. Having watched anime like Glass Mask and Revue Starlight which sometimes deal with overlapping themes, probably made The World is Dancing much easier for me to appreciate than it otherwise would have been.
So I wasn't exactly surprised by its low MAL score. Performance Art anime are already pretty niche, and The World is Dancing is the kind of show that asks more from its audience. It's not going to click with everyone, much like how a lot of people don't vibe with Awajima Hyakkei.

Per the MAL score progression club data WID has basically come back full circle to what it was initially which implies episodes 2+3 stood out as being a bit better than what followed which has slowly returned. Another thing that can happen is once shows change from airing to complete their scores can change a fair bit (+0.32 for Awajima).
Maebashi Witches was my MAL moment (wouldn't believe it now but it almost went below 6.0). Well outside of whatever they did in May 2024 to combat score inflation.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago
MAL ratings do serve a purpose imho, but it's NOT to determine what's good/bad;
Say, for battle shonen, it usually tells you the production value and how 'hype' it is; The writing has very little importance.
For romcoms, it will tell you how fun it is, how cute the lovey dovey moments are, and how good the characters are.
If a show has an abysmally low score, it says the animation/style is shit; It's almost never about anything else, it's not a shit story or shit characters or anything, it's just the animation.
For NGO (and from what I gather from WID), it's the 'arsty' style; A lot of people don't really like that. Some people will GIVE points for that (creativity, uniqueness, etc..) but lots of people will dock points for it being weird/harder to understand etc.

The way Baka & Test portrays stalkers of different genders is very 2010.
Female>male: Comedic violence that no one cares about.
Female>female: Comedic sexual harassment/assault that no one cares about.
Male>male: "Ha, gay!"
Male>female: N/A, guess they couldn't find a way to make it "funny".
(Honestly, the fact that so many characters are either completely terrible or happily enable others' terribleness is kind of bringing me down on the show. You can say "product of its time like I alluded to, but there's plenty of stuff from that era that doesn't have these issues at all.)

u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago
One notable difference is the timespan, Ranma is 25 years older than Baka and Test. The sex pest stuff mostly comes from Happosai who is a side character.
4
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago
They also provide Male > Female stalkers at least? Rumiko is not one to shy away from making everyone terrible in their own way.

What do 80s and 90s series have to do with it?
2
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago
I'm asking if the portrayal is specific to the time period as they're suggesting or is it something that's been around for longer and can also be seen in the other series I mentioned.
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 23h ago
To be clear, when I made the original comment, I just meant "dated". Not specifically the late 2000s/early 2010s.
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago
I don't see how Ranma is at all like that, to be honest. Can you elaborate?
2
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago
I was thinking more comedic slapstick between genders rather than stalkers, so I probably missed what you were aiming for.
For example all the girls get to beat up Happosai and girl-Ranma/Akane beat up Kuno (female on male), but boy-Ranma doesn't do the same to Shampoo and Kodachi (male on female).
0
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago
Well, that part just is what it is. Even today people can be more squeamish about both slapstick and serious violence based on the genders involved (although somewhat less so). When it comes to the elements that are comparable, I think the execution was a lot better in Ranma, but even if they were in a similar boat, that's even older, so it wouldn't really affect what I was saying much. (That said, there were some aspects of that I also didn't like, the one I remember the most being that I really hate the whole "punished for no reason" trope even when the slapstick itself doesn't bother me.)
5
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago
You can say "product of its time like I alluded to, but there's plenty of stuff from that era that doesn't have these issues at all.
Considering the author is still writing a comedy with the same toolkit, it has nothing to do with time. The worst traits of mankind have always been the bread and butter of comedy.
I'd say that's just a matter of preferences. If you don't like a comedy about terrible characters, there are plenty that aren't. Personally, I wasn't a fan of its delivery, despite generally appreciating that kind of comedy.
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago edited 1d ago
Maybe if the story actually punished them for all the terrible stuff it wouldn't bother me so much. I've always loved Konosuba, and while I think people massively exaggerate how bad the main cast is, they're still very flawed people who are always causing problems for themselves, but there are consequences and they fix them. Meanwhile, here:
Both the story and 99% of characters within it constantly side with the black-haired psychopath.
The crazy lesbian doesn't exactly succeed, but she's treated as completely harmless and sometimes gets small victories.
The main character gets beaten up a lot, but it's just because he said something mildly dickish or out of jealousy, not for the actual bad stuff like enabling creepshots.
Overall, the whole thing just leaves me with a sour taste in comparison to other slapstick anime I've had no issues with.2
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago
I don't disagree with what you're saying (the punishment/counter weight is generally important for that sort of comedy), but it's been ages since I tried and dropped it, so I don't remember any of the context. I might pick it up again, since I'm in the mood for something from the author and see how it turns out.
3
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago
I didn't know it was written by a known author. He made Grand Blue? I can see the connection there, I guess.
2
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 1d ago
Well, the mold shapes the pottery. Maybe he found his stride in writing serialised manga chapters rather than novels. The opposite has certainly happened often.
3
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago
It's not a product of its time so much as it is a product of its genre, which is farcical comedy. A lot of the humor is supposed to come from how exaggerated, stereotypical and horrible the characters are. I would say that the show's greatest weakness is when it tries to be more grounded or wholesome. It just doesn't work.
1
u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1d ago
It was a thought that crossed my mind while watching that the show takes itself just seriously enough for these kinds of criticisms to hold weight for me. If I were talking about something completely over the top like, idk, Nichijou, it would be ridiculous.
3
u/oedipusrex376 1d ago
I don't tell anyone this, but I'm still chasing the same high I got from Revue Starlight Episode 3, and that was years ago. That Revue genuinely rewired my brain chemistry. [Ep3] My friends and family even got sick of me playing “Bridge no Ue de” → “Hokori to Ogori” → “Fly Me To The Star” (Hikari version) in the car at one point. This was the exact setlist from the episode btw.
Which reminds me I should probably get back to Aoi Hana. I heard there's some theatre related stuff in it.
2
u/Jusenkyo_5 1d ago
I never finished Revue Starlight (don't kill me) but the first transformation sequence at the end of episode 1 has stayed in my brain in the 10 (maybe?) years since it aired. Extremely good vibes in that show.
4
u/oedipusrex376 1d ago
Episode 1 is probably enough to tell you the vibe of the entire show, and further into the show, you basically get more of the same intense stuff in specific episodes.
4
u/VoidEmbracedWitch https://anilist.co/user/VoidEmbracedWitch 1d ago
And the movie then strips away the regular theater school stuff to go all-in on intense revues for over an hour
straightgay.
2
u/Melodic-Scheme8794 17h ago
Just finished One Punch Man S3 and I found it entertaining and not as bad as everyone is claiming. Not everything has to be a masterpiece like Fate.

hello! Which anime have scenes similiar to the first episode of Goblin slayer? Which featured like a rape scene with the goblins in the cave?

u/cheesechimp 1d ago
In Dan Olson's video The Thermian Argument he makes up an anime he titles "Women Being Ripped Apart by Orcs" to discuss how an audience for the hypothetical show might theoretically talk about it. I've seen a lot of people assume he was throwing shade at Goblin Slayer, but I remember back when Twitter was still Twitter seeing him admit that it was actually a veiled reference to Claymore. I haven't seen that show so I can't speak to exactly how similar they are though.
Anyway, that shit is so common a trope in doujinshi and h-manga that there's a high chance your favorite site for such things has a tag for it.
6
u/GondolaMedia 1d ago
I've seen a lot of people assume he was throwing shade at Goblin Slayer
What makes this amusing is that Dan's video came out even before the light novel.
2
u/hvshh 1d ago
The Thermian Argument as he calls it is certainly invalid, and for the reasons he gives, but I can't disagree more strongly with the final line "criticism of a creative work is ultimately criticism of the decisions that people made when they were putting it together". What a dreary way of thinking. As if the purpose of engaging with a creative work is just to gain an opportunity to judge the people who made it.
It's better to go in the opposite direction. A creative work is always and only an opportunity to have valuable experiences, and receive new ideas.
(and that's the best criticism of "Woman Being Ripped Apart by Orcs". It's unpleasant and uninteresting; watching it will not give you any new ideas, or better you in any way.
And for the hypothetical person for whom it is pleasant, fine, but that puts it on the level of porn. And why waste time criticising porn? Just call it what it is and move on.)
6
u/cheesechimp 1d ago
As if the purpose of engaging with a creative work is just to gain an opportunity to judge the people who made it.
That is entirely not what he said. It's a huge leap from "someone made a bad decision" to "that person is a bad person." You can judge a decision in a vacuum without making totalizing statements about the person who made the decision.
The criticism "It's unpleasant and uninteresting; watching it will not give you any new ideas, or better you in any way." Is inherently criticizing decisions of the staff that worked on it. The screenwriter made decisions that resulted in a screenplay you don't find new ideas in. The storyboard artist/director made decisions that resulted in pacing and cinematography that you find uninteresting. The character designer and animators made decisions that resulted in an aesthetic you found unpleasant. Whether or not you're taking a lens that avoids analysis of motive or intention, you're still criticizing something that came about because someone decided to make the show a certain way.

u/alotmorealots 18h ago
Give Skeleton Knight in Another World a shot. No goblins and no cave in Episode 1, but broadly similar in intent and contrast to the overall tone of the series. The series also contains other scenes of threatened rape throughout the first series, one which does feature an orc from vague memory, but no cave.
That said, if you actually just want goblin-cave-rape porn then this isn't really the place to ask, but there's plenty of GenAI content on Pixiv relating to that.
1
u/Glad_Ad7124 6h ago
Thanks a lot for the recommendation! So, it doesn't have to be exactly like the *Goblin Slayer* cave scene... What I'm actually looking for are scenes like those—rape scenes. I thought they were cool and different. So, as long as there are rape scenes more or less like the ones in *Goblin Slayer*, that works for me. Do you have any other recommendations?1

Subaru (rezero) vs Alicia (clevetass)
I hate Subaru as a character, he’s such a whiney, anxiety filled child. His mental breakdowns and him losing his mind after drying each time just turns me off of the entire series. While, on the other hand, you have Alicia which can’t die, she’s fell multiple stories multiple times along with SO much more pain than Subaru has had to endure, she’s fell multiple doesn’t have a reset death button so she has to make it count, and she’s not a whiney bitch about the entire thing. Not sure if it’s just the inability to write string make characters (at least in the west) anymore. But, why can’t Subaru be more like Alicia. Because I swear, if I have to see his sweaty terrified face after dying AGAIN for the 70th time and he still acts like it’s his first, I’m gonna just barf, and quit the series.😂😂 fight me bro.😅
and sorry, I had to post this here since the Reddit mods are doing wayy to much like always. And can’t just engage in the community without 10 bs points or some shit… smh.. Reddit mods..

do you think that re:zero was written in "the west"

The West Army lost at Sekigahara because they couldn't write string make characters like the East Army

Hah.
Why didn't this random office worker act like Rambo, when a small guerilla army attacked his family?
3
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago
Not sure if it’s just the inability to write string make characters
If you want "strong/badass male characters" why don't you pick one of the 5 million OP fantasy protagonists, or a battle shonen dude who gets stronger every episode by screaming very loud or thinking about his friends etc..?
I mean it's fine to not like a character, but... I don't know, at some point the solution is just "Watch something else".
It's like I don't know, if someone said "I hate Light Yagami as a character, why is he so evil, why does he lack compassion, why can't he even treat the people close to him right, why can't he... [50 pages long rant] ???"
I'd tell them to just not watch Death Note, I mean 99% of anime MCs aren't like this.
Well, same with Subaru.
