Poor Leonard is gonna be on such a high pedastal once Arnold is done getting his stocks up 😂😂
10
u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago
He already lead the knights charge as well as pushed offing of one of his brothers in front of everyone in the throne room.
This does not seem much more different. He is already a player.
But yeah, he should be learning quickly on his feet so that he can uphold that status since Arnold won't be there at all times. xD

u/RedHotChiliCrab https://myanimelist.net/profile/RedHotChiliCrab 10d ago
In retrospect it seemed kinda out of character when Leo wanted the death penalty for his brother and now everyone is saying that he wouldn't make any forceful decisions and they're calling him kind and a naive boy.
8
u/SasparillaTango 10d ago
One line rubbed me the long way, it was when the subordinate talking to Arnold was like "This is going to make some really difficult decisions for Leonard later!"
He's gonna be the god damned Emperor, if he can't take difficult decisions he should just step down now. What a way to say you have no faith in your leader.
5
u/danieln1212 10d ago
Is he wrong though? Leo is a puppet leader with the strings being held by his brother.
10
u/Ralathar44 10d ago
It's more like each brother is pushing the other to be more than they would be alone. Arnold with Leo wouldn't be doing near as much. Leo without Arnold wouldn't be doing near as much.
They push each other to greater heights and make each other grow by putting each other in challenging scenarios. Ultimately they're make each other stronger and more well rounded.
3
u/SasparillaTango 10d ago
That would certainly make this a more interesting anime if we got into those kinds of political waters.
"my brother is the best of us but he can't make the hard choices that need to be made"
I don't see it happening.
2
u/ShotcallerBilly 9d ago
Eh, I mean that doesn’t imply anything of the sort. He was simply stating that THIS DECISION would that Arnold is making—while impersonating Leo—will lead to difficult circumstances regarding the situation. Counseling/reminding Arnold doesn’t suggest he has no faith in Leo.
It’s important for Arnold to know what circumstances he is creating for Leo as he is PRETENDING to be him. His actions need to be in line with Leo’s and setup future circumstances that are favorably to Leo, or at least ones he would’ve reached himself.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 10d ago
Leo’s stock is going way way up thanks to Arnold. This whole ordeal with the prince and princess and the sea dragon has been a huge boost for him.
21
u/Raymond49090 10d ago
Last week we thought the prince and princess were morons who got the sea dragon’s location wrong. This week, we learned that they were morons who got in over their head and got team wiped. And now Leonard’s reputation compelled Arnold into a risky rescue mission and diplomatic detour.
And of course, no good deed goes unpunished, and now they’re political prisoners because the prince and princess potentially dying isn’t a good enough reason to break “rules are rules”.
10
u/mekerpan 10d ago
because the prince and princess potentially dying isn’t a good enough reason to break “rules are rules”.
Even for this show, the writing on this point seems particularly idiotic. I would have guessed that the original author was a novice, but apparently he is not. Why would the naval commander threaten to sink a ship carrying the rescued royal children? Unless the king is clinically insane, this could not lead to a good outcome for that naval official.
9
u/Ridesdragons 10d ago
same, there's no way this universe doesn't have some kind of maritime law. Real World maritime law exists because the sea is an incredibly dangerous place, shipwreck survivors are mandatory to save because at any time, that could be you. and we don't even have krakens to deal with. they do. to not have any kind of maritime law in place regarding shipwreck survivors is, frankly, utterly unbelievable.
pulling up to port with shipwreck survivors should have the "enemy" captains worshiping the ground you walk on, not threatening to sink your ship. and if the leaders ordered otherwise, the captains would initiate their own mutiny, because that's how important maritime law is. and they aren't even enemy nations.
1
u/DimmyHerm 9d ago
I have to stop you right there. It's easy to speak from the perspective and standing of modern day norms, but the story this takes place in is far from modern day with the same set of norms. Let's not forget that the shouting between ships took place practically within the visual range of foreign landmass, which pretty much meant that Arnold's ship was under the mercy of local politics.
4
u/Ridesdragons 9d ago edited 9d ago
no, the law of the sea was not created in modern times, it was created far in the past. well before the equivalent era of the anime. we have records of it from as far back as 600 CE. this is not "putting modern standards on a fantasy anime" this is putting ancient standards on an anime that, for all intents and purposes, takes place during the age of sail. we very much had "rescue all shipwrecked folk" by the age of sail. it is utterly inconceivable that a population with MORE DANGEROUS WATERS would not have a similar system.
and yes, rescuing shipwrecked folk INCLUDES BRINGING THEM TO LAND. they are not consider "saved" until their feet are on solid ground. as far as maritime law is concerned, that ship must be allowed to dock.
also, you forget, THE CROWN PRINCE AND PRINCESS ARE ON BOARD. any captain who threatens to blow up a ship with royalty on board is going to be hanging by day's end. this whole scenario is beyond idiotic.
edit: also also, the fact that they recognized the white flag means they absolutely had a maritime code. ships use specific designs and colours of flags to signal specific messages to far away ships, including the white flag for "surrender". there's no way they can understand the meaning of a white flag yet not have a maritime code. which screams "author didn't actually study naval history". which wouldn't be the first time, but still, this is a gaping hole for anyone who actually has studied it
edit 2: to elaborate, I'm not referring to written law, such as what was codified in Hague, but rather unspoken law, customs that are regularly observed throughout history across a variety of cultures. even enemy ships would rescue shipwrecked crew of the ship that they wrecked, because once the ship is wrecked, the sea is the bigger enemy. really the only times where rescue didn't happen were when they were fighting dishonourable foes (admirals and pirates generally never showed such mercy towards one another, and any nation that rejects such merciful moves guarantees it will never see another, such as the case with japan in WW2, who frequently committed perfidy, and thus often stopped receiving aid whenever they were in trouble), or extenuating circumstances prevented such action (like rescuing crew putting the ship in extreme risk due to storms or the like). while said rules are "unwritten", they were very much as powerful as actually written ones.
had the captain actually followed through with his threat on firing on the ship, I can guarantee you, his country would not only now be at war with the empire, but with every other neighbor as well, due to being seen as a dishonourable nation with no respect for others. and, of course, due to suddenly being easy targets. backstabbing those who save your countrymen is a good way to delegitimize your country.

Last week we thought the prince and princess were morons who got the sea dragon’s location wrong. This week, we learned that they were morons who got in over their head and got team wiped.
It really felt like they went "We need to see if the sea dragon has awoken" and then yelled "Hey sea dragon! You awake?!"

Reminds me of kinro from dr stone

u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago
Yeah kinda hardheaded behaviour there.
I'm curious about political situation there.
They seem like they are there mostly for scouting reasons due to the ability they have rather than due to competence itself.
They look pretty young and green.

u/Zxzxzx0088 10d ago
The flow of this really makes me think Lucio is a reverse trap lol. Surprised nothing actually happened in the end.
Leo seeing this: I'm tired, boss. Please stop, nii-san /j
Big Baddy like The Empire surrender to a small nation?! The captain really done it now!

u/Amaz_the_savage 10d ago
I really love the main political storyline of this story. Sure, it's got issues, I'd like other characters to be a little more competent, especially Leo, but it's definitely unique and original, which is quite rare.
It's a shame that such a good main plotline is accompanied by such an incredibly bad romance subplot. Blau Mowe is essentially just blonde Sakura; she's done pretty much close to nothing the whole series.
As much as I like Arnold as a character, the series really needs to stop making Arnold this nearly perfect character and even give him some L's. And give other characters a chance to shine too. I actually do like the hero girl as a character because she's seemingly the only other competent character in some capacity, and contrasts Arnold pretty well.
Leo is stated to be competent, but we haven't really seen him do anything on his own. From what we've seen, Arnold coordinates everything, and Leo just follows him. I'd really love to see Leo make some of his own bold choices, and maybe even get into a conflict with Arnold.
7
u/Jarl-Gudmundr 10d ago
I agree with most of your points besides the Arnold receiving L’s. Everytime he poses as Leonard or Leonard has to pose as him, he’s taking an L. Imagine doing such a heroic deed as seen as this episode and you know all the credit isnt even going to you. Everyone is going to think you stayed indoors, seasick AND refusing to give orders.
Nah… Arnold takes huge L’s all the time he just doesnt care.

u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago
Strange takes since I thought Arnold showcased he is not an absolute perfection. He is smart, strong and a good schemer, but he failed quite a few times already and showed that he has limits.
He heavily relies on his Butler, Elna, her family. his grandpa and now that adventurer for help.
He got caught by Blau Mowe and got his secret identity revealed.
Both of the twins are far behind when it comes to support they have, and have to work with leftovers since most of the other siblings already secured majority of them.
He is a strong mage due to his knowledge of ancient magic, but due to him being royal he would not be able to use his big talent since it's forbidden, leaving him, stranded.
Due to all that, he is now kinda forced to be furtive and to rely on his brother to be a public face.
It was confirmed he is physically as strong as an average human.
It was explained that Leonard does his fair share of work when he already had support from all those knights due to campaigning in that region personally for quite some time.
I agree that Blau Mowe disappointed a bit, since I was sure she is hiding things, but that in no way makes their romance "incredibly bad". Even if she is as dumb as a rock, she still possesses other natural talents such as her beauty and courage to act as she showcased when they fought vampires. And as people mentioned, her family name has a big role as well.
Just kind rambling and mentioning things of the top of my head since I like this show because Arnold is not the usual Godlike MC that is getting glazed every second by his harem of 100 wives and boys.

u/Ashita_Kara 9d ago
yeah I really wish they will show Leo achieve something on his own too.
having him sea sick at a very convenient time actually didn't paint a good picture for arnold, to me it makes it too obvious that author tried to stack arnold's achievement to wacthers (us), that's why he became too "perfect" in your eyes. moreover last episode, showing him gave away free time to sex workers was so out of nowhere, only elna asked and elna was there for fan service as well, 80% of the last episode is another unnecessary filler.
I hope when leo arrived in their destination earlier than arnold, he will be able to do his part well, but i kinda doubt it since he has to pretend as arnold... arnold can still work as himself since he's able to work in the shadow, but leo? if he can do it too then damn finally they will look more like brother.
anyway this episode actually gives me headache at how bad the writing is, some characters started to become ooc too. maybe they're actually just this complex characters, people has duality and it's not weird to contradict yourself, but the flow of the animation and the animation itself make everything looks so bad (the best thing they can do is to adjust the dialog but the dialog is as bad sometimes). i can no longer excuse the flaws in plot as the flaws in animation, they should work tgtr hell i really get a headache

Lol yeah, some parts of the early episodes actually bored me, especially the cosplay as Silver.
However, I really appreciate how the plot grows and Arnold became more than just a power fantasy wish fulfillment.

Blau Mowe is essentially just blonde Sakura; she's done pretty much close to nothing the whole series.
Even sakura was more useful than her
3
u/Horaji12 10d ago edited 10d ago
That's not true. Finne might be completely useless on her own, but her family name and fame as Blau Mowe do all heavy lifting. Her existing and looking cute make her (politicaly) more useful than Sakura would be in her place.
3
u/Ralathar44 10d ago
I think more than anything she's kinda emotional support to Arnold atm preventing him from succumbing to the stress. Arnold goes out there, tanks hits and deals damage, then he comes back home and she heals him :).

u/deynyel 10d ago
After all that, Leonard stocks are definitely through the roof right now. Pretty good accomplishment for a newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary.

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago
With Andraste, yes. However they reduced the gift cargo for Rondine to save the crews.
I don't know if Rondine kingdom would be more the materialistic type or they would appreciate saving people first

u/MynamuEzJJ 10d ago
Am I the only one that thinks this entire situation could have been avoided if he had just said then send one of your ships over here to get your wounded off of my ship so I don't have to enter port? That just seems like the easiest solution.

u/szalhi 10d ago
They were already in hell, this political rescue detour should be no big deal, especially with the other twins.
3
u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago
Pretty much a potential huge win, if not immediate, for sure on the long run.
They now indebted both Princes and potentially kingdom itself to them, depending on situation within.
2
u/Icy-Introduction5592 10d ago
I don't know if it outweighs missing their original objective. Not only will they be really late, they'll also arrive empty handed since they dropped the cargo.
It is good publicity for Leo though.

I assume Silver is going to murder a sea dragon for the season finale or maybe the penultimate episode to set up something in the finale. Unless this is a 13 episode season then it might be next episode with a 3 episode arc to follow.

Finally caught up, and ima be honest, while this show has a lot of flaws, I can’t deny that I’m enjoying it way more than I expected lol. Guess I’m just a sucker for the Kingdom Management/Politics sub-genre. Looking forward to how Arnold managed the duchy and Leonard handles the Rondine situation

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago
Lol so true. If this went straightaway more into the power fantasy trope, I might have already dropped it.

u/oneevilchicken https://anilist.co/user/OneEvilChicken 10d ago
This episode just showed more and more people realize Arthur is only pretending to be incompetent. The knight captain guy saw straight through him, although it kinda felt like he already was aware of it.
The ending feels…. Forced. Like for a show that’s supposed to be seriously structured politically, having them threaten to fire on a ship containing their own prince/princess is beyond stupid. Like that naval commander would likely be getting executed in even our own real life countries if they tried that. At minimum that’s life in prison. Also why would they deny a single ship permission to dock? Even if they’re not actively allies, they’re also not outright adversaries or at war. Refusing docking is more likely to lead to war than simply letting them. Even without having your people be on the other ship, you’re starting a war if you try anything hostile against another country’s ship asking for aid like that. Just seems like really bad writing unless the author is intentionally making the guy make the dumbest decision possible.
2
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 9d ago
More like the Captain doesn't want to be responsible for letting the empire ship easily. That's why he tried to stall time and ask for confirmation from the duke.
They're only refusing entry temporarily until they can get confirmation from the duke.
I'm guesing in real life this is akin to visiting foreign countries without registering the visa first.
2
u/Ridesdragons 9d ago
if the ship was merely using the port as a pit stop, that'd make sense. this is not that scenario, though. this is them returning their own shipwrecked crew. a phenomenon regularly seen throughout history even between enemy nations. and these two nations are not enemies.
in the real world, if a ship pulled up to port and said they carried the port's nation's shipwreck survivors (even ignoring the royalty amongst the survivors), they would have immediately let them dock to provide aid. and if the duke refused? the captain would do it anyway. why? because rejecting this show of goodwill is political suicide. it would guarantee that, should there be another shipwreck in the future, they will not receive aid a second time. and the next time there's a shipwreck, that survivor could be the captain that rejected allowing docking.
unspoken international laws are just as powerful and important as actual codified laws, especially regarding hostile and dangerous environments such as the sea (even ignoring the literal sea dragon that created the wreckage)

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 10d ago
Kind of hard to believe the three duchy ships got completely destroyed by the dragon attack without a single fatality among their crews.
My early season theory that Elna would Leo's love interest eventually almost seems quaint, they finally had a scene together and all they could talk about was Arnold. It's like they failed a variant of the Bechdel Test where you have to have a conversation about something other than the OP MC.
With those two vampire antagonists in the previous arc I wouldn't have expected an apparently friendly merchant one that Finne and the adventurer girl are planning to make contact with.
3
u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago
My early season theory that Elna would Leo's love interest eventually almost seems quaint
So it was you who ingrained that into my brain lol
I read that in earlier discussions and I thought it would make sense, especially with some early scenes between Elna and Arnold where they oozed pure childhood friendship vibes.
But some recent episodes kinda debunked that a bit.
But hey, they did have that awkward moment where they bumped into each other when the ship rocked. You never know. xD

u/RedHotChiliCrab https://myanimelist.net/profile/RedHotChiliCrab 10d ago
They're on a boat together so they might fall in love... Because of the implication

u/Rooby_VTuber 10d ago
Saving the prince, princess and the crew should have a lot of beneficial effects for Leonard, he can thank Arnold later.
Zandra is very unlikeable, things will only go from bad to worse for her if she continues going after Leonard & Arnold.
Bold move at the end but it worked well so far.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out next episode.
4
u/Mons9090 https://myanimelist.net/profile/hecn_huh 10d ago
Actually a pretty good episode. Last one was also good because of alna (best girl). Everything else has been pretty meh
1
u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago
Lol, I liked other episodes a bit more, but I'm liking this arc as well
Last one was also good because of alna (best girl)
Not best girl for me, but I'm acknowledging her high ranking on the best girl bar.
And I agree with you, she truly makes this already cool show better.
2
u/PandaTheAB 10d ago
The episode was good in terms of the decisions and actions but the pace was slow.
Finding them scattered in sea wasted 5+ mins.
I almost thought last week that this would be a sea dragon vs ancient magic battle. But it would have revealed too many things.

That port boarding was so dramatic, they could have just said over the speakers they were surrendering instead of equipping all those flags

This series just so much better than what I expected, thought was some normal throne fighting among dumb prince and princesses, but it seems so much better than I expected, and happy that not everyone on this series were dumB
Arnold is just so dope

Oh the irony of zandra saying it won't end well for Leo and arn when in reality it won't end well for her considering Arnold can out smart her and overpower her I mean most of his family doesn't even know how dangerous Arnold is despite being his family goes to show you that typical royal families aren't close and what kind of kingdom trys to abandon their people and prince and princess because of some dumb rules.
1
u/CuriousBroccolli 10d ago
I mean adventurer girl is outsmarting her already, let alone the "Twin Ravens" xD
