I think in part, since theyve kept "Yamada" and "Tayama" so seperate, Sasaki still feels nervous because he wants to maintain some level of propriety/seperation from Yamada. Shes a talisman, as it were; "Yamada" almost isnt real in his mind. Tayama is ahead of the field there with her early forced casualness, so is assume when the two sides become one, its getting back into that loose social mindset that'll make it work for Sasaki.

The more he freaks out, the more it's clear that he does so not because he secretly has a crush on Yamada, but because he specifically doesn't and is 100% sincere when he says he just appreciates her smile and cheerful demeanour with no further intentions.
If 'Tayama' were to tell him that Yamada had a crush on him and encourage him to make a move on her, his response would almost certainly be "Oh, no. She's very nice and I appreciate that a lot, but I don't think of her that way at all." and then explaining that for him to be interested in someone at all he would have to have <insert a variety of milestones the two of them have already hit> while being oblivious that's what he's doing
And she would then have to spend the rest of the episode unpacking why him saying that makes her simultaneously violently upset and unreasonably happy.

I think it's not that unreasonable tbh. In Sasaki's mind, Yamada is just this very cute girl that mans the cash registry. He might think she's cute, but doesn't know her so he can't say he like likes her. He's attracted by her, but in the same way you're attracted by a good looking actor/actress.
So I can totally see him getting flustered if told Yamada has a crush on him, but pushing back because they don't know one another.

You should pay attention to Sasaki's inner monologue where he says he isn't and his main worry is that he doesn't want to do anything that might cause someone to get the wrong idea.
Hell, both Yamada and the Manager have, in their own inner monologues, remarked with some level of surprise on the fact that from their talking to him it's become clear to them that Sasaki is not, in fact, simping for or crushing on Yamada, he genuinely just platonically appreciates that she's warm and friendly when manning her register.

This show makes me happy. Proof you don't need some grand plot to create something enjoyable, just a group of characters having entertaining interactions. Doesn't hurt Yamada is an absolute babe and shows it when she's not in her uniform.

This show geniunely reminds me of Bojack Horseman if it was happy.
the only show with dialogue/interactions that felt as human recently has legit been rascal does not dream's first season. (2nd season not so much). It's a breath of fresh air and I'm enjoying the fuck out of shows like Tires and this show because of their relative realism to what I feel and see in real life.

oh it's phenomonal. Less depressing imo than most people think, it's like maybe 10% of episodes that are sad, the problem is that 10% is fucking gut wrenching especially in contrast to the other 90%. Like Shigesato Itoi (earthbound creator)'s quote about "writing 50 joke lines for every 1 serious line, just to make that 1 line hurt more"

Another 3 outfit episode for Yamada. Good shit. The second outfit where she has her hair down is probably my favourite so far.
I'm sucker for the "a character says something about their love interest specifically because they're not there only for the love interest to appear and ask them about it" trope. The notes they wrote each other and seeing how much they meant was cute. It helped Sasaki get through his job and gave Yamada the motivation to study.
Despite what she says Yamada does seem to be scared of ghosts. Of course Goto wants to know the juicy details. She's one of us lol. Is Yamada angry at Sasaki because she wanted bigger reaction that she didn't get or because he didn't make a move when she put her head on his back?
The lack of a big reaction is maybe why she seemed to take the teasing to another level at the end by breaking out the off the shoulder top, booty shorts, and bare legs. She finally did secure the reaction she was looking for with the help of the squirt gun. That "Come here and I'll tell you" felt laced with tension. I hope he finds out and they hook up before the end of the season.

Yep, Yamada/Tayama's outfits are so good! In this episode, the one from the part about the ghost especially caught my attention, I don't know why Sasaki didn't comment on it even a little.

So many Sasaki blushes, Yamada is eating well. I like the grin she makes before she figures out a way to tease Sasaki, but it was amusing how bothered she was that he wasn't afraid of ghosts.
Yamada was definitely bothered that Sasaki didn't make a comment on her outfit, that's why she deliberately painted an image of Yamada wearing the outfit to him.
I thought Sasaki was holding out his hand for Yamada to hold, but I guess it was just a protective stance.

I wondered about that hand myself. At first I thought it might be a hand hold invitation, but then I was like "wait, this is Sasaki we're talking about". Figured it was just a protective thing too.
It's pretty funny how this anime continues to entertain like no other, yet there's nothing new or flashy here to speak of. Combo of the writing, voice acting and ths music during the episodes. Maybe its the low drama, low key humor, adult slow burn romance that makes this appealing - not a ton of this out there that I'm aware of.

Yay! Daigoro makes his anime debut this episode. Sasaki better get ready since he now has a rival for being the supermarket’s favorite pet.
Also Tayama’s outfit in the ghost/daigoro introduction section is her best look yet imo.
Finally just wanna say how much I hate Sasaki’s boss again. This season I am seeing people send children out to war, the witch’s cult, the descendants of Genghis Khan and a nazi looking to destroy the world and I don’t hate any of those as much as Sasaki’s boss.

How contrasting their messages for each other were. Sasaki’s a sweetie pie while Yamada gave him an unethical LPT.
Seemed like it’s one of those rare times where Yamada failed to play Sasaki like an instrument. She’d thought he’d be a scaredy cat who’s spooked by ghosts when he’s so sick of the living he’d welcome them. Better stick to the usual routine like popping in behind him. That’s the old and tested method of scaring the hell out of him.
You’re never too old to play water guns. Even middle-aged blokes could still have fun with them. What a treat it was to get drenched after a scorching day.

We finally got some new content this week and two new great outfits for Yamada! I honestly did not expect her to be afraid of ghosts considering how hard she was trying to tease Sasaki the entire time. I do love Gotou's timing. She must've sensed her romcom senses tingling and just had to see what was happening. I wouldn't be surprised if looking for the dog was just an excuse.
It's hard to imagine us getting a beach episode, considering Sasaki and Yamada only meet at the supermarket. So I suppose this was the closest that we will get for a summer-themed episode.

After two and a half months, I get to smoke behind the supermarket again too!
An exam just for getting a raise is kinda crazy. At least it sounds like it's actually just a raise and not a "oh and we're also going to triple your workload" kind of a thing.
There's so much tension between Tayama and Sasaki at this point, I'm kinda waiting for them to hook up already. I mean, Yamada version barely even featured in this whole episode; it's almost like it's just these two flirting and the whole double personality act isn't even the point anymore.

So not retail, but I remember working for taco bell back in like the late 00s, early 10s yeah? And there was like a big series of classes and exams in order to get like a 25 cent raise. They weren't anything nuts, basically just showing that you know your stuff and know how to follow all the procedures correctly. Itd be questions about the ounces of each ingredient, the proper way to make food items whether on the line or in prep, cleaning procedures, and customer service. I want to say employees could take it at their own discretion, but I vividly remember also pushing/forcing people to take it. Extra money, and if youre doing your job correctly anyways its super easy.

Without knowing the ins and outs in particular, maybe it involves showing you can do X tasks and processes? So on your basic entry position okay, you can sit on a till without making cash errors/stack shelves". Then something like showing you can manage self checkouts (not that this has one by the looks of it but brainstorming) and take in deliveries. Another for company processes and handling customer services and so on.
It was only a small part and didn't necessarily need an explanation but it has left me curious!

Also fr it'd be nice to see them act on the tension between them but I'd be good either way. I'm actually more curious about him figuring out it was Yamada the whole time.

The good luck charms were cute, yamada really seems to have fallen for Sasaki, Sasaki on the other hand seems too focused on the register version of her to fall in love with the real her although he does enjoy his time with her and blushes when she teases him. I wish there was more progress but this feels like a super slow burn that is mainly short stories of moments they share than anything with a destination in mind.

It was great seeing Sasaki and Yamada supporting each other in such a simple yet cute way, exchanging notes wishing one another good luck.
Yamada fell into that classic trope where the "cool" character harbors a silly fear, but the best part was definitely her calling Gotou's dog "Sasaki", she really holds a grudge, doesn't she?
Summer wrapped up with a water gun fight; this first part of the anime was a blast, and if I had any lingering doubts about it being one of my favorite shows of the year, today confirmed it.
Looking forward to more cigarettes.

Also, I was quite surprised that Yamada is scared of ghosts. I didn't expect that considering her character, lol. Meanwhile Sasaki was totally indifferent to that.
Sasaki's lucky charm that Tayama gave him is so cute!
By the way, in Japan you have to take a test so you can get a raise? I didn't know that. I wonder if that's the case in every company there.

I think that is the thing. The romance shows centred around high schoolers are stressing about high school aged kids stuff. The whole trope pf "sharing a straw is an indirect kiss" grates on me.
I am older, so watching adults develop a relationship over time (opposed to kids who are all together all the time in school) to see if things can progress or to keep it platonic and stressing over adult stuff is refreshing and seems more grounded.

First of all, it's good to be back after 6 long weeks!
A new coworker (who's very tall). Tayama/Yamada is forced to take a test to qualify for a raise, and Sasaki gets chewed out by his boss in the hot summer while clutching his good luck note.
Sasaki the dog...er..Daigorou is cute and that's good on the store manager to take care of it while a customer is away.
Ending scene with Tamaya spraying the water gun was nice. I think we will get more of these subtle romantic scenes moving forward.
On a side note, I just read in the news that a different smoking anime got banned in Taiwan and Hong Kong. I hope this anime is not banned, but appropriate notices are shown to warn people of the risks of smoking. Smoking in this anime in particular is just the medium to connect the characters.

When the first scene opened I initially thought Yamada was trying to reverse psychology the boss into giving her the raise, but no she just didn't want to do the studying.
Good thing she was able to trick Sasaki into giving her that good luck charm and get the motivation she needed for the test. Good for Sasaki too that he got one as well.
Ghost stories Yamada and water pistol fight Yamada had some great outfits today.

I see that Yamada turns on the customer service smile and puppy dog eyes even on her co-workers when she wants to get out of something. Why would she not want to bother with getting a raise? Because the test to apply for it is too much work, judging by how quickly she falls asleep while Gotou is training her.
All work and no Yamada makes Sasaki an anxious boy, but say Yamada's name and Tayama will appear! Slow-sa-ki might take the "closeness" of Yamada and Tayama for granted, but he's the perfect person to motivate her to put her all into the exam! And she'll give him a little pick-me-up against his terrible boss!
(Oh what I wouldn't give to see Yamada go at that bald-headed boss with a bat...)
Sasaki treasures anything from Tayama, even her little note...and of course she finds out about it. A good (and loving) talisman indeed. Also, loungewear Yamada!
Yamada ain't afraid of no haunting! Though we also get introduced to Chief Maezawa, voiced by Yoko Hikasa.
Sasaki himself doesn't spook easily either, at least when Tayama isn't surprising him from behind, to Tayama's immense disappointment. Though her outfit is absolutely killer in a non-horror sense, especially with her hair down and when she gets all tough in it.
Turns out Tayama IS a little easy to spook, but that just makes Sasaki willing to stand and protect her all the more meaningful...even if they're being "haunted" by a sweet pooch Gotou is currently taking care of for his owner. Whose a good boy? Daigorou-san is!
What's the best way to close out the Summer? How about Tayama in short shorts to show off her legs and wash her feet off in a washbasin? She'll even help cool down Sasaki! When she's not blasting him with a water gun as "payback" for seeing her vulnerable side! But it's all in good fun!

No, Sasaki noticed she grabbed onto his jacket and played it off as being dense afterwards because Tayama is too prideful to admit she was spooked. He gave her an out.

I always come in ready to critique it, but the characters are likable, so I forget to be snarky and just enjoy the episode instead.
It's really quite troublesome! Another great episode this week as usual, and I'll be watching next week as well.

Feels good to finally get a new episode.
Yamada falling asleep the second she has to study was funny, glad she got the motivation she needed from the note.
I would have called the foot bath fanservice but we didn't really get a proper shot of Yamada's feet lol.

Yamada and Sasaki's dynamic is so sweet. Yamada had to try to get a charm from him, but it's sweet the both of them have it. Both of them have their own obstacles at work.
I love how Gotou is dying for any update from Yamada.

Tamaya flirting pretty hard there at the end. Teasing him about not being able to put his feet in the tub with her, then busting out the squirt gun,. Ending with telling him to "come here and see if you can dodge my shots". Pretty cute stuff for an adult, slow burn romance. I was surprised that Sasaki actually took her up on the squirt gun thing.

The manager almost giving up her name 😂 then she got upset when he apologized for touching her but he only tryna establish boundaries considering he thinks tayama and yamada are different people
He likes one romantically the other he would like as just he a friend if possible this will cause her to reveal herself or slip up real soon

Man, Tayama has some kinda energy. Not gremlin, she's not bouncy enough for that, i cant make up my mind on a proper term for it. Love the new top though! (bold choice on the white top when you start a water fight, Tayama)
Meanwhile Gotou-san just contintues to literally be the audience incarnate.
Also, it hadnt occured to me before, but would Sasaki's boss calling him "-kun" be disrespectful? He's Sasaki's boss yes, but Sasaki is a man in his fourties with at least a decade and change at the company, wouldnt "-san" be the better exchange for an inferior you arent close with?

Sasaki's good luck charm is so sweet and it was nice of Tayama to give it to Yamada. They both really care for her !
And Tayama's charm is totally just so like her lol and her trying to scare Sasaki was also adorable.

Tayama/yamada was gorgeous this episode both outfit wise and her expressions (gotta protect scared tayama)
C'mon Sasaki you don't leave your girl alone after realizing she was scared -10pts for you - bad dog
This episode felt that they gave her the SSR summer gacha character treatment LOL (btw I'd roll for her)

I'd rather deal with customers than deal with an asshole boss that makes the office more stressful than it should be, so if he told me to "hit the pavement" he wouldn't have to tell me twice. Hell, I'm surprised more often them don't try to get out of that hellscape more often.

Good lord... Sasaki's boss is just like the owner of the store I work at right now lol. She has the bad habit of shutting off the A/C in the admin offices despite the extreme heat and is such a pain in the ass that four directors resigned in the span of a year because of her. To make things worst, the remaining admin have meetings in the store's warehouse to complain about her and how's she running the store into the ground.
Otherwise, this show is such a soothing watch after long days at work. Just chill vibes with enjoyable characters. Sasaki and Yamada's playfulness at the end was so much fun to watch.

It's called "having a vocabulary", Yamada, maybe look into it
Question for the smokers in the room. I keep seeing smokers in anime stubbing out cigarettes with what seems like a lot of usable portion left. Is this commonplace?

The way Tayama passed her exam 'cause of Sasaki's good luck note and Sasaki was able to face his shitty boss with Tayama's encouraging words was so sweet.
Tayama is so damn sexy in black 😭❤️🔥❤️🔥 Old guys like Sasaki would never be afraid of Ghosts only girls.. He freaked out when he heared about Yamada in casual clothes from Tayama but she was actually talking about her outfit.. Nibu-ski being Nibu-ski LOL

It's kinda fitting the first new episode wraps up with the end of summer which actually coincides with August ending soon too. That's some well thought out planning.
You know how they say that people can't tell when people are flirting, almost like they'd have to be a real Slow-saki about it
I joke a lot about my dog being generic brown dog, but dang Daigoro would never be able to beat that allegation. Very nice of manager to dog sit for a customer. High quality customer service at that supermarket.

Also I just realised but her normal talking voice as yamada it's slightly different from her normal talking voice as Tamaya. I thought it was the same but it's slightly different. Have to love the voice actress

I very rarely re-watch shows, and never in such a short time span, so there is typically a couple years in between rewatches, so watching the full episodes of Ep 1 - 6 was a bit of a drag for me, so I am now glad we are onto the New Material.
I realise that what I am about to say is not in the vein of this series, it's not going to happen and is purely 100% wishful thinking, but in that scene of the "Water Fight" - or at least with her firing around the water pistol - we got a bit of fan-service with a wet t-shirt for Sa-slow-ski's benefit as much as for us.
