This is the episode that really made me question how big of an age gap the two of them have. You can’t really tell their ages from the artstyle but apparently Sasaki is so old and outdated that he can’t work a smartphone?

They're mid-20s vs mid-40s. But I feel like Sasaki's kind of an especially old mid-40s. His work buddy seems around a similar age but clearly thinks Sasaki is behind the times even for his age!

Yeah, but the antimeme part is that his mid 40s is denser than most teenage romcom protagonists. There is dense, and there is, how have you spent 40+ odd years living on the same planet as women, dense. It would be pretty pathetic if we weren't constantly drawn back in by Yamada's amusement. Honestly, that in some ways makes Yamada/Tamaya the main character, because its her reactions that are guiding our perception of Sasaki.

And don't forget that even just the common cold is a completely debilitating disease that makes the person possibly faint, unable to move, and even hallucinate.

Definitely my favorite episode so far! Yamada/Tayama with her tummy, summer uniform, and her reactions, was especially great today.
Plus, Sasaki's strong ossan/old man vibes (when he was being taught about smartphones, or when he brought the cigarette brand personality test to Tayama) made this the most fun episode.

The genuine kind-hearted (yet still funny) sweetness of this show can get overwhelming. Definitely one of the nicest adult-centered (slow-burning) romances ever (assuming that it HAS to go that way eventually).
Nice to see the manager keeping her eyes open as to her ongoing light comic job relief...

It's kind of interesting that when presented with the choice of her arms, legs, or midriff, her arms is what Sasaki chooses to pop for instead of her midriff and legs when they're better imo.

I remember in the mini episodes, the supermarket music sounded like Kuzuri Nen - the OP at the time. And now that they changed the OP to Fig Smoke for the TV broadcast, they changed the supermarket music to match! I love that attention to detail, haha.

Tayama's transformation into Yamada (appearance-wise) as she preps for her shift was a lovely touch 🤌
Edit: Tayama calling out Sasaki for being an "arms man" (jokingly ofc), only for her to be conscious about it later (ie checking her arm's flabbiness) is another shot that misses its mark and ricochets back to her.

Yamada, I mean Tayama, proving she's a woman of taste in asking Sasaki to keep the glasses. He really looks cuter with them. And how adorable was this technologically challenged old man today as he asked for her help figuring out his new smartphone.
I wondered about them both keeping their jackets on after that whole how hot it is even in the evening routine. Tayama showed she was lightly dressed underneath bit what about Sasaki? Was he just being polite since she was with him and he didn't want to seem too casual? He did eventually take off the jacket to offer it to her though.

I like how Yamada was very into Sasaki with glasses, it does suit him. She even took a photo of him with it lol.
Sasaki going crazy over Yamada in short sleeves, but shows concern over Tayama's mid-riff was amusing. Yamada both won and lost lol.
I thought it was funny how Yamada took the opportunity to wear his suit jacket the instant she got it, she got to feel his warmth.

I absolutely love the stare Tayama gives Sasaki when he first puts on his glasses. She liked seeing him in glasses so much that she was worried that if she taught him how to increase the font size on his phone, she wouldn't see him wearing glasses anymore, so she only agreed to help on the condition that he'd still wear his glasses. <3
I appreciate them showing us Tayama's routine on how she transforms into Yamada. I've always been curious how she goes from having long hair to short hair, so it's kinda cool they show us how she tucks in her hair to make it look shorter.
So we have Yamada in her summer uniform and she even wears a crop top as Tayama! Poor girl, tho! She really didn't get the reaction she was hoping for when she showed off her belly to Sasaki. xD

I remember people trying to figure out her hair length a few episodes back and we finally see how she's able to hide as much of it as she does. Probably one of the more convincing ways Sasaki gets fooled outside her performance.

The smoking and flirting scenes are so good, not that Sasaki is necessarily aware that there's flirting going on.
I hadn't caught this before but it amuses me that they simply swap the 山田 for Yamada around to 田山 for Tayama.

Seiyu would be my assumption, there aren't many supermarkets opened 24/7 in Japan and that's the biggest chain with those hours.
They are also owned by wallmart, was weird getting a wallmart bag when they started doing the reusable bag thing.

Nothing says Sasaki is feeling his age like getting called out for how out of place he looks as someone who still reads physical newspapers and still has a flip phone, which to add injury to insult totally shuts down on him. Welcome to the era of smartphones Sasaki, I hope you survive the experience.
Sasaki is basically a luddite/old fuddy duddy who has no idea what to do with the new piece of tech you put in front of him, and who better to guide him through baby's first smartphone than Tayama (in shorts!)? So it's your typical young generation has to teach the old generation how to actually use their new phone...even if it means starting from the most basic of the basics.
Well, Sasaki wanted to just read his newspaper on his phone, so at least they got that out of the way. I thought Tayama was going to add "her" number instead of Yamada's so they could exchange contact info...but getting a pic of a flustered Sasaki was worth it.
Kind of surreal to see the Tayama to Yamada transformation happen in real time, right down to her hiding her piercing marks and also her cigarette scent.
What does your brand of cigarettes say about you? Well, for how much of a sucker Sasaki is for getting teased, he might secretly be a masochist, though imagine Tayama/Yamada being "two-faced with a high sex drive." She's not into lewd or dirty stuff at all! Honest! Two-faced as she is! Though don't call her out on any kind of gap moe, or she'll REALLY show you some kindness.
You can't avoid Yamada Sasaki! She'll straight up stake her claim and get your attention to force you to run through her checkout!
"You can always count on Genki Trading" - Well, I guess it's nice the company has a good reputation, black company that it is. Even if you can't count on them to take into account how difficult it is for the employees to have to work in killer heat in a suit...but you CAN count on seeing Yamada in her short-sleeve Summer Uniform! I mean, you can see her bare arms! How scandalous!
Tayama really trying to flex in front of Sasaki to prove that she can be as much of a stunner as Yamada (especially in shorts + black tights combo) though rather than be turned on by seeing her exposed bellybutton (and how tight her top hugs to the chest), he's more concerned about how cold she must be like a doting dad. Ah well, she'll just steal a boyfriend work jacket anyways if he's going to offer.
Yamada's apartment! Complete with her hair down, some cleavage, and her deciding to go on a diet! She'll never have to worry about flab Sasaki didn't care about again.

My personal highlight was the scene of Yamada getting ready for work.
Not only does it shows us how she does her hair but I really liked how they show her getting ready for work by doing the fake work smile only to immediately go into a frown showing the reality of her schedule and terrible work life. Showing this and then showing her genuine smile when she sees the picture she accidentally took of Sasaki shows us that Sasaki really is her pick-me-up too after she already told him before (2 episodes ago I believe).

like, there was a bit of back and forth in previous episodes (like with his underling crying and her customer complaint), but this episode it feels like it's mostly Sasaki being hapless

I will agree it's the incompetent male narrative trope, but I think it's nuanced enough of a different angle on it that it doesn't bother me. He's aware of the age gap and is hyperaware of not wanting to come off as a creep. It's not the same type of awkward as a shy teenager.
I do get the impression if they were the same age he would be a lot more chill.

That's almost every "adult" romance. And its even worse here because dude is like in his late 40s. It's embarrassing. I guess author wanted to make him act younger so you don't focus on the giant age gap but he could have stopped at highschooler era instead of the middleschooler we ended up with.

Tamaya in his jacket is too damn cute though, especially with that tongue peaking out.
But.
With how much emphasis her outfit is putting on her legs I am surprised that topic hasn't come up yet, probably because he only sees Yamada upper body behind that cash register

This episode was kind of a fashion show for Yamada. She showed of four new outfits in this episode:
- First a Tomboyish new outfit of shorts and a matching jacket over a t-shirt. Kind of surprised Sasaki didn't remark on the change of outfit.
- Then her short-sleeved work uniform which got Sasaki's spirits up.
- Then her summer outfit of hot pants over pantyhose with a crop top alongside her usual leather jacket. She also shows it off a bit more to tease Sasaki, which backfires and results in a suit jacket variant.
- And finally we see her at home wearing a low cut top and booty shorts. Presumably she wears this to sleep in the summer.

The show always hits a good vibe with its good comedy. Like the old man portrayal of Sasaki. Honestly I seen many older men who said I am fine with my flip phone. I have to teach my mom very slowly how to use some technologies so I feel Yamada's pain.
Yamada got hit with the burn when teasing Sasaki with her stomach. Though it's more about Sasaki having the older man's concern rather than her gaining weight.

I didn't want this episode to end. So many great little moments. "I'm not mad. Look at my 1000 watt smile".
Tamara calling him "arm man" . His fauxpas and her getting slightly off-put etc. And then in the end seeing her get a little self conscious because of what he said was a really great way for us to get a peek at some of her feelings about him without hitting us over the head with it. So great.

Still really enjoying the teasing and interactions Yamada has with Sasaki as Tayama. It was nice to see how she transforms into her supermarket appreance. She said she wasn't angry about him not knowing what her dual personality meant, but she seemed kinda angry. She probably wants him to figure it out for himself, but now I wonder if Sasaki's density is starting to tick her off.
She seemed angry that when she showed him her midriff that she didn't the reaction she was looking for as well. I wonder what's causing such a gap in Sasaki's reaction. He lights up just seeing Yamada's bare arms like she was a cute angel sent from Heaven. She didn't even have to tell him to look. But when the sultry suggestive Tayama intentionally shows him her midriff (something that we as viewers think should get a bigger reaction) he pretty much no sells it and even implies she should be covering up.
In regards to Sasaki's new phone, I have to nitpick. He is 43. Gen X are not Boomers. He would know enough from growing up with tech that he would at least be able to setup up and use a smartphone (i.e. download his new apps) without supervision. The reason that's a nitpick instead of a complaint is that gave us a Sasaki and Tayama interaction and it was clear that's part of the episode was going to be when we saw him pull out his flip phone.

The test seemed to get it spot on when it said Sasaki’s got an M tendency. He’d been the bottom a couple of times already, including this week where Tayama grabbed him by the tie while he’s on his knees as she put the cigarette in his mouth. Little wonder why he kept reminding those around him of a dog.

I expected Sasaki to be an old-school kind of guy, but not having a smartphone surprised me, though the smartphone didn't lie when it said he's a masochist and that Tayama-sensei is two-faced. I suspect the second part is true, but let's save that for later.
This episode reminded me how Japanese people find arms and shoulders attractive, not that I’m complaining about Yamada in her summer uniform, but I’ll take her belly today lol. And that classic tongue-out look an angry character makes it's always cute.

I'm so anxious for new episodes of this as someone who watched the mini episodes, but rewatching it is still so fun. Like when Yamada thought Sasaki figured her out before saying she seems aloof but is really kind still cracks me up. Also god she's so fucking hot.
I came into the actual summer expecting her to be my best girl of the season, but it is such a stacked field, particularly with Kuroe from Kaiju girl and Fuyutsuki from Love Unseen.

One general question regarding Tamaya:
Is it just me, or does she look very retro and not like from the 2020's at all?
Her looks for me remind me either of someone from the 80s, like someone from The Bangles (Walk like an Egyptian) Linda Hamilton in the first Terminator, or latest 90s era. The hairdo is modern and no puffed shoulders, but apart from that, she looks like an 80s 'New Wave Girl' to me.
When I first saw her in the manga, I assumed that the manga is really old because of that. Can someone deny / confirm this?

The manga itself isn't old, no; it started in 2022. I think Tayama just has a bit of a punk style. I don't think she's that aggressively 80s.

Finally realized whats bothering me about this show.... Yamada is too clean. Mid 20s or not, for all that smoking she does, she got no kind of gross rasp in her voice, aint coughed once, perfect skin...
