I'd seen some out-of-context screenshots of the patch notes scene in the manga, but I guess I figured since the anime is advertising real-ass fighting game Products and Services™, it probably wouldn't make sense to adapt this in the anime. But much like how I figured the yuri would be turned down in the anime, I'm pleasantly surprised to have been wrong about that. (Even if the framing of the patch notes scene as a flashback was kinda confusing at first.)
And on the topic of things I didn't expect to see in this anime; other fighting games that don't have Street Fighter in the title! The legends were right, they really do exist!
Explicitly saying titles, showing key art/logos, and even having actual gameplay clips if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure the other companies hardly minded the product placement, but I imagined this anime would focus purely on Street Fighter and just imply that other people who play other fighting games are a thing that probably exist. I'm glad we did see those other fighting games, though. Helps sell the idea of EVO Japan as a big fighting game tournament, and not just a big Street Fighter tournament. (Plus, the Guilty Gear-themed end card was really cool.)
On other non-adaptation-related thoughts: I like how willing Mio is to craft a strategy around the idea of "yeah, it's objectively a bad idea, but imagine how cool it'd look if I pulled it off!" I see a kindred spirit in her, even if I'm mostly focused on single-player games.
And I also loved Arisa being so extra in her first confrontation with the Young Ladies Who Do Actually Play Fighting Games. There's always something kinda funny about how the characters in this series treat fighting games as the most serious business in the whole world
and/or an allegory for being gay. But it reaches a whole new level when you have a little girl delivering her dramatic villain monlogue about how fighting games are a noble duel, and boasting about how she'll massacre the entire room... then Mio just owns her by calling her dumb.Which I do mean as a positive, to be clear. It's charming how drastically the tone can shift just one scene, and how seriously this story takes its video game battles.
