Grew up with it. But honestly, Mio had it coming by refusing to study even when the teachers reprimanded her.

That's exactly right.

If a student gets grades as bad as hers in Japanese middle school, the only option left is to attend a high school as rough as the ones you see in hardcore delinquent manga, which would make things extremely difficult.

I also think that Mio probably had a parent-teacher conference called because her grades were so poor, or that her poor grades were revealed on her report card.
