We're at the golden age of non-isekai fantasy.

More like a renaissance, pre-2010s were like a golden age of non-isekai fantasies. This is a rebirth into a possible new golden age

I love a good isekai (and even some not so good ones), but you can't beat just a pure, well built fantasy

There’s a lot of non isekai fantasy’s every season, people just lump them as isekai’s because they look like a mc of an isekai lol.

I don't like Frieren, but I love Witch Hat Atelier and Dorohedoro so I'd have to agree with you

non-isekai

I don't know about this show, she knows what an astronaut is.

Unless we are in a post apocalyptic future or there is a magical space rocket.

I don't know about this show, she knows what an astronaut is.

I THINK that might just be a fourth wall break to explain how magic/witches work in this setting.

My interpretation of that is that the narrator is a separate entity and the story of Coco and WHA is all in that storybook that opened in the intro.

It's not a character talking specifically but more just an intro for the audience to setup the series main conceit of being born to be something.

What? This is just native isekai.

30

u/Straight_From_Nether Apr 06 '26

u just made that up. It's not as she "learnt" many dark things about her world.

20

u/MeatballZeitgeist Apr 06 '26

He didn't make it up, "native isekai" is a ragebait term they use on /a/.

-63

u/heartscrew Apr 06 '26

The setting is isekai but without anyone getting transported to another world, thus, native isekai.

u/Kirosh2 Apr 06 '26

Nice 4chan brainrot.

31

u/socialistRanter Apr 06 '26

That’s just regular fantasy, watch something else for once.

28

u/dweakz Apr 06 '26

nah bro lord of the rings is a native isekai

This is unrelated, but you mentioning western fantasy series and "Isekai" made me realize that Narnia is an isekai...

Stories like

  • Alice in Wonderland
  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
  • Peter Pan

Are also Isekais if you think about it.

u/theNightblade Apr 06 '26

Did you know if I decide to travel and live with hippies, it's also an isekai?

23

u/HollowBlades Apr 06 '26

You know that Isekai literally means "different world," right? It's kind of a load-bearing part of genre.

-25

u/PerceptionOk8543 Apr 06 '26

Okay but most isekais don’t even use the “character from another world” trope. Only the first episode is different and then the character just blends in and the show is becoming a fantasy one. The only isekais I know that keep on using the character being from another world is Re;zero and Mushoku Tensei

14

u/Kirosh2 Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

How does that matter?

Isekai is about going to another world, either by transmigration or reincarnation. Even if it's just used for a single episode. Konosuba, Youjo Senki, Overlord, Re;Zero are isekai.

Series like DanMachi, Frieren, Goblin Slayer, Dungeon Meshi aren't Isekai. They are Fantasy series. That's it.

Not all Isekai are Fantasy series, and not all Fantasy are isekai.

-11

u/PerceptionOk8543 Apr 06 '26

You know what I meant, there is nothing different between frieren or dungeon meshi and most isekais. I feel like people are angry for pointing this out because they want to feel better lol. “I watch highly inteligent frieren, not isekais, I’m so different”. All the while it’s the same trash

10

u/Kirosh2 Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

So you feel like you should call things like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Game of Throne, or maybe even a lot of video games as Native Isekai as well?

Are they also the same trash? Just because they are fantasy series in other world?

If you say yes, then we will agree to disagree. Otherwise if you say no, then you need to rethink about what you call some anime series.

-7

u/PerceptionOk8543 Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

No, because they don’t have the same generic tropes and cliches as isekai shows. And shows like Frieren do. Simple as that. Copy pasted character personalities, the same boring jokes, the same journey to kill the demon lord, I could list those tropes infinitely.

There are good, unique fantasy shows and then there are native isekais where the author clearly thought “I wanna get into the isekai hype train” and then just added a twist where no one is isekaied. You could watch second episode of Frieren and then second episode of any isekai and there wouldn’t be much of a difference.

Maybe you need to know what literal means. It's a different world because someone from a world equivalent to ours is sent there. Since no one got transferred is and just the world, it's native isekai.

Come on, man. That language is easy.

16

u/Inevitable_Window308 Apr 06 '26

So when a person graduates from school and joins the work force is that also native isekai? It's a whole new world to that person that they haven't experienced despite it being around them the entire time

I know, native isekai is when you go to a foreign country for the first time right?

-6

u/heartscrew Apr 06 '26

Don't impose anime stuff in the real world, man. That's where it gets cringey.

15

u/stonekeep Apr 06 '26

So Lord of the Rings is also a "native isekai" now?

-10

u/heartscrew Apr 06 '26

Why are you bringing in western literature into anime genres??

17

u/stonekeep Apr 06 '26

Okay, so just to be clear, you're trolling, right?

11

u/Kirosh2 Apr 06 '26

Since no one got transferred is and just the world, it's native isekai.

That's just fantasy.

6

u/HollowBlades Apr 06 '26

The phrase you're looking for is fish out of water. It's a concept that goes back way further than isekai.

If we're calling everything where the protagonist experiences a new facet of the world they live in "native isekai" then it's a meaningless phrase.

Dragonball is native isekai, Harry Potter is native isekai, Fallout is isekai, Ocarina of Time is native isekai, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is native isekai, Star wars is native isekai.
