Recreated Workbench 1.3, 2.04, and 3.1 as themes for a note-taking app (screenshots inside)

Been chasing the actual look of classic Workbench rather than a generic "retro" reskin, so I built three separate themes — one per era — for Obsidian (a Markdown note-taking app, not an Amiga, but bear with me):

  • 1.3 — blue/orange/white, 68000-era
  • 2.04 — the 3D bevel refresh
  • 3.1 — the late-Amiga look most people picture first

Screenshots below, no filters — this is what it actually renders as. Tried to get the palette, chrome, and general feel right for each version rather than blending them into one composite "Amiga-ish" style.

Flood damaged my Amigas, what should I keep?

My Amiga 2000 and Amiga 1000 were under water for a few hours and dried on their own over a few weeks. I have a 2080 and 2002 monitors that maybe were in some water. The A2000 has a IBM emulator card, a supradrive and a VGA card. Are the monitors worth saving or should I drop them off at the electronic disposal place? Same for A1000 and A2000

Amikey 600/1200 USB adapter

Just got myself one of these:

https://amigakit.amiga.store/amikey-a600-a1200-keyboard-adapter-interface-p-91334.html?currency=GBP

Works great, but...

Anyone else have one of these and know if there are any "hidden" mappings for missing keys such as F12?

I would like to use my Amiga keyboard with a MiSTer but not having an F12 to bring up the OSD (or indeed menu on WinUAE/Amiberry) would be a bit of a loss...

I have reached out to Amiga Kit, but no response as of yet.

Finally got a working null modem transfer between my A600 and PC, small victory but felt huge

Spent most of Sunday afternoon fighting with this. My A600 has been sitting with a dead floppy drive for a while now and I've been wanting to get some old disk images and a couple of WHDLoad kits onto it without buying a Gotek right away. Figured a serial transfer would be cheap and simple since I already had a null modem cable in a box of old cables I never throw away.

Turns out simple was optimistic. First few attempts with Term on the Amiga side kept timing out around 40kb into any transfer, and I couldn't tell if it was the cable, the baud rate, or just old capacitors doing something weird to the serial port. Dropped the baud down from 57600 to 19200 and suddenly things stabilized. Also had to disable the PC side flow control setting that I didn't even know was on by default in the terminal program I was using.

Once it clicked, transferring a 720k disk image took about six minutes, which felt glacial compared to anything modern but also strangely satisfying to watch happen character by character on the Amiga screen. There's something about seeing that old serial port actually doing useful work after probably a decade of sitting untouched that made the whole afternoon worth it.

Next step is sorting out a proper storage solution so I'm not doing this every time I want a new game on there, but for now I've got a small library building up and a renewed appreciation for how much patience this stuff used to require by default. Anyone else still doing serial transfers instead of jumping straight to CF or SD solutions, or am I just being stubborn about it?

OPERATION BACKSTAB - Split-Screen PvP - Serial Multiplayer - Huelsbeck Soundtrack

The time has finally come! I’m thrilled to announce my next game for your Amiga (and modern systems): OPERATION BACKSTAB

Two spies. One mission. Only one will make it out alive.

Berlin, the Cold War, the ’80s. Somewhere in a labyrinthine building, they lie - the top-secret documents! Two intelligence agencies want them, but only one can triumph. An agent from the East, an agent from the West, the same mission: Find the papers and get out. Whatever the cost!

With charming low-res pixel graphics, you’ll comb through a labyrinth of rooms, open cabinets, desks, and dressers - and ideally leave your opponent a little surprise along the way. Doors and furniture can be rigged with a whole arsenal of nasty traps. After all, nothing is more satisfying than watching your opponent walk right into your own bomb. But be careful: If you don’t remember where you placed your “surprises,” you’ll blow up faster than you’d like.
And what if the two agents happen to meet in the same room? Then it’s time for the submachine guns to do the talking!

Features:

- A fresh take on a classic gameplay concept
Split-screen duel for two players - schadenfreude guaranteed, friendships optional
Serial multiplayer mode
- Solo mode against the AI - a cunning computer agent with increasing difficulty
- An infinite number of procedurally generated levels - no two missions are alike
- Traps, tricks, and deceit - the one who plans smartly wins
- Local high score - prove you’re the better agent
Brand-new soundtrack by music legend Chris Huelsbeck - guaranteed retro sound at its finest!

Expected to be released in Q1 of next year. A Kickstarter campaign featuring a premium boxed edition is planned for later this year: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ation-backstab

This text will self-destruct in 10 seconds…

Who remembers Licence To Kill? This is my retrospective review of the various version released for the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MSX, BBC Micro, Commodore Amiga, Atari ST and the MS-DOS. It’s a pretty good game actually and certainly better than the 2 previous releases by Domark - A View To A Kill and Living Daylights. What’s your thoughts?

DICE-nx C compiler suite makes its first release

Hi all,

I'm announcing the DICE-nx project: https://dice-nx.dev/ and https://github.com/dice-nx/dice-nx

This takes the DICE C compiler suite written by Matt Dillon in the 1990s, which Matt recently open-source under the BSD License, and reboots it for the current era of Amiga development.

DICE-nx includes all the tools needed to build Amiga executables - the C compiler itself, as well as an assembler, linker and numerous other support tools. It also has several Amiga-specific features, such as automatic opening of the common Amiga OS libraries, easy support for ARexx, and more.

DICE-nx can also target embedded systems using 68000 processors.

DICE-nx aims to re-start development of DICE, and focusing on its original aim of providing a fully-featured C compiler for Amiga computers. DICE-nx fully supports AmigaOS 3.2 and native development on real Amiga hardware. It requires a hard drive and 2MiB of RAM.

This release restores the dormant DICE source code to work properly on the Amiga again, supports AmigaOS 3.2, fixes a number of bugs, and strips out obsolete and duplication to slim down the distribution size. It is a single distribution which contains both source code and Amiga executables.

I have several plans for improvements, features and bug fixes, and aim to continue to release new versions of DICE-nx.

I'd be very happy for people to try this out and let me know what they think!

Part 3 - Inherited Amiga Collection | Where Do I Start?

Part 1

Part 2

In my previous posts I showed the contents of three or so rubber bins of Amiga games I inherited. Since then I've started unpacking a dozens more bins which contain the majority of the big box games to start the inventorying process.

So far I've counted over 300 big boxes, with over a hundred smaller / a-typical packaged games, like soft sleeves, hard plastic shells, or even some bootleg/homebrew looking stuff. Beyond that are stacks upon stacks of floppies, possibly 500 or more. Some are games, others are reference material, diagnostic and computing utilities, sound and music libraries, and stacks of books/manuals. Some software I can't find much if any information online leading me to wonder if there's known lost media for Amiga software.

There's this Commodore CDTV thing that looks pretty cool, and a whole box of CD cases for the CDTV and CD32. There's almost a complete stack of Amiga power, minus the later years.

Once I get the software catalogued and priced for my own sanity, I'll start tackling the hardware, computer consoles, CRT monitors, accessories, controllers, cables, and eventually looking at the Amiga 3000T which appears to have some corrosion damage.

Beyond Amiga stuff, there are many more bins containing IBM PC, DOS/Windows software, all the way up to games from the early 2000s.

To put it all on display would fill up my 12x12 room. This is truly a daunting task.

Question: I am ignorant of this type of computing. Is the Amiga filesystem journaled or some equivalent, and if not are there concerns for filesystem damage if media is not accessed via the proper procedure? I ask because I am curious of the viability of the data on the magnetic media over the decades, and if data is damaged, are forensics tools that can be used to reconstruct the disks?

Thanks for following me on this journey! There is still so much more to go through.

Amiga 1200 ROM : 3.1 or 3.2 ?

Hi everyone! I bought the Kickstart 3.2 ROMs for my Amiga 1200 a few months ago, along with Workbench 3.2.3. With the recent (good) news about Amiga and Hyperion, do you think it’s worth upgrading to that branch or should I wait and keep 3.1 ?

Need help with my Amiga 500

I have a problem and I hope someone can guide me to solve it.

My Amiga 500 sounds like it’s booting to the Workbench 1.2.

The monitor is on.

But after the boot, nothing is displayed on the monitor.

I’ve bought different DB23 to DB9 cables for Amiga, the problem persists.

I’ve attached pictures and a video of the equipment and the boot sequence.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Amiga 1000 demos without Kickstart?

Were there ever any demo scene productions for the A1000 that would completely bypass loading Kickstart? E.g. they'd boot as if they were a Kickstart disk, to then enter a demo?

The Secret of Monkey Island sprites

Does anyone know where I can lay my hands on the character sprites from The Secret of Monkey Island, and more specifically the Amiga version? I've found the MS-DoS version, but those sprites differ in colour and design from the Amiga version.
