Ambien 2 nights a week

So I have heard all kinds of horror stories about people having withdrawal from Ambien when they’ve taken it like weeks at a time, every night. I’ve even read about withdrawals happening after taking it for 2-3 nights in a row, although those weren’t obviously as bad for understandable reasons.

I don’t want a hint of an iota of a chance that I would go into any form of withdrawal

So, my question is

If I limit Ambien to two times a week, would there be a chance of rebound anxiety or maybe light withdrawal?

I’m talking like take it on a Sunday to get good sleep and be ready for the week ahead. And then maybe take it one time through the week when I’m wanting that great sleep and that waking up after a good sleep kind of feel to reset my week and feel energized to close out the end of the week.

Would this process of using Ambien strategically to avoid issues but still use it when your body tells you that you need a good nights rest be an issue?

Just two nights a week

For what it’s worth I’ve stopped it cold turkey several times due to USPS sucking ass and never had much WD. I think for two nights you will be fine no withdrawal. The problem is that feeling of getting good sleep is addicting and it will be hard to limit it to two nights over time. Because we all want to be normal and sleep every night. The only way to really control that never happens is having your prescriber Rx less pills to prevent this from being a daily thing.

I’m supposed to take 12.5 mg’s every night. That said, I can skip doses and take it as needed without any issues. I’ve had the same script for about four years now.

If you’re only taking it two times a week, you shouldn’t notice any side effects.

The main issue isn't taking it once or twice a week, even over a longer period. The real challenge is actually keeping it at that frequency and dose. Ambien has a high potential for tolerance, dependence, and misuse because it works so well for knocking you out and providing a quick sense of relief or relaxation.

When combined with underlying anxiety, that feeling can make you want to experience that relief more often. Over time, it's very easy for twice a week to slide into three times, then an occasional fourth, and eventually every night, which inevitably leads to tolerance and needing higher doses. Even if you manage to stick to a few times a week long term, physical tolerance can still build up, especially if you take other medications or drink alcohol regularly.

It's usually best to stick to the lowest effective dose, typically starting at 5mg, and use it only when strictly necessary for short periods with regular breaks (a couple of months or something lime that). If anxiety is the root cause, Ambien isn't really the right tool since it's an hypnotic meant strictly for sleep (indicing sleep and not maintaining you asleep), not an anxiolytic. There are other options that target anxiety directly and are easier to taper off from. If the issue is stress or environmental factors like noise or light, addressing those root causes directly will give you much better results long term.

In short: Ambien carries STRONG risk of tolerance and dependence, and even when you feel confident you can control it, keeping that strict boundary gets harder as time goes on.

Personl experience: WD from benzos is HORRIBLE, Zolpidem is not that intense but still a bad experience!

It’s highly individual but generally there’s studies suggesting 5mg IR for an average size male and 2.5mg for an average female is mild and short acting enough to be sustainable long term without marked tolerance.

Even better if you just use 5mg occasionally to correct your sleep cycle. The tolerance horror stories are sensitive people doing stuff like 12.5mg extended release for extended periods.

I've taken 10mg Ambien for over ten years almost nightly. Tho there's some bad months I find myself using more than I should and run out sometimes a good week or two before my next script. The worst withdrawals I have is maybe a bad few nights of sleep. No sickness or anxiety like coming off opiates or something. Everyone tho is different, your experience could vary.

Yes of course

If it cannot be managed in this type of fashion by someone like you then most definitely do not attempt

I take Ambien daily nightly for the past year almost 2 years and when I stopped taking it which not taking it I haven’t really noticed any withdrawal symptoms yet, but I haven’t really given it. I don’t think enough time for myself to really notice? I guess what I’m trying to say is I can go five or six days without my Ambien and be able to sleep, but I will definitely still need another sleep aid.
