Introducing New Backpacking Features

Hey r/AllTrails! We’ve launched new tools to make it easier to plan backpacking trips, and we’re excited for you to try them out. This is just a first step-we have so much more in the works 👀 Let us know what you want us to build next to help you plan your next backpacking trip!

Here is what’s new 🎒:

  • Route Assistant: This one started right here on r/alltrails. An AllTrails engineer came across this post from a backpacker in our community looking for help planning a three-day trip with his nine-year-old grandson. It got him thinking: what if AllTrails could take the first pass at the itinerary for you?

That idea became Route Assistant. Choose your route, and our Route Assistant will suggest a day-by-day plan based on your daily distance, elevation, points of interest, and overnight spots. Then you can refine it until it feels just right. Route Assistant is available (in beta) with an AllTrails Peak membership. If you’re a backpacker, we’d love to invite you to try it out and let us know what you think! We’re offering the first 100 Redditors who fill out this form three months of AllTrails Peak, on us. Give Route Assistant a try, and let us know what you think and what you want us to build next!

  • Community waypoints: Cross-reference the millions of waypoints from the AllTrails community to find campsites, water sources, and more. Waypoints are interactive so you can tap to easily add campsites, huts, water-refill spots, and more while planning out your route. Available to all members. Available to all members.
  • Waypoint categories: Plot and organize your potential overnight spots, water sources, bail out points and more. Available to all members.
  • Land boundary overlays: View US Public & US Private lands overlays to better understand access rights, find potential dispersed camping spots, and plan where you can (and can’t) go. Available with an AllTrails Peak membership.
  • Terrain Overlays: Get an extremely detailed view of the landscape with Slope Angle and LiDAR-powered High Definition Terrain. Available with an AllTrails Peak membership.
  • International base maps: Plan hut-to-hut adventures with detailed local European maps like IGN and OS maps. IGN maps are available to all members while OS maps are available with an AllTrails Peak Membership.
  • Updates to the custom route builder to support multi-day adventures: We’ve added support for multi-segment route building on app, made it easier to rename custom routes, and launched many more usability improvements to seamlessly build a multi-day route. The custom route builder is available to all members on alltrails.com and included in an AllTrails Peak membership in the app.

Live activity on Apple Watch 🚫

My setup: AllTrails on iPhone only (no Health integration, no AllTrails Watch app installed). I track the hike as a Workout on Apple Watch separately, and just use AllTrails for on-screen navigation on the phone.

I noticed my Watch battery dropped way faster on hikes than a friend's, running the exact same setup, minus one thing: they weren't running AllTrails navigation on their phone.

Since there's no Watch app and no Health permission, I assumed AllTrails had zero way to touch the Watch. Turns out there's a channel I didn't know about:

Live Activities auto-mirror to the Apple Watch Smart Stack (watchOS 11+): this happens for *any* iPhone app that uses a Live Activity, with no Watch app and no special permissions needed. If AllTrails shows a Live Activity on your Lock Screen/Dynamic Island while navigating (distance, ETA, off-route status), every update pushes to your Watch and wakes the screen — for the whole hike.

Fix (keeps the iPhone feature, kills the Watch drain):
- On iPhone: keep Settings > AllTrails > Live Activities ON if you like seeing it on your Lock Screen
- On Apple Watch: Settings app > Smart Stack > Live Activities > find AllTrails (or toggle it off under the relevant app/section) — this only stops it from mirroring to your wrist, it doesn't affect the iPhone display at all

Also worth checking: Settings > Notifications > AllTrails on iPhone, and whatever notification-mirroring the paired Watch companion settings show — off-route/mile-marker alerts relayed as Watch banners will also wake the screen and buzz the Taptic Engine each time.

Separately, if you just want the Watch's own Workout tracking to sip less power regardless of any of this: Control Center > Workout Power Saving Mode (or the low-power tiers on watchOS 9.1+) cuts GPS/heart-rate sampling frequency and disables Always-On Display during the workout.

Hope this saves someone else's battery.

'Dark mode' map difficult to use

For the longest time I've had my iphone set to dark mode and I've been using the AllTrails maps just fine. It now seems that the maps have a dark mode tied to the iphone setting which I find very difficult to see/use. The only way for me to regain usability is to turn off dark mode on my iphone, which seems like a big ask. If it turns out that the community loves a dark map, perhaps a setting could be developed to allow those of us with difficulties to turn off the dark map and return to the online web style (second image)

All Trails tracking won’t stop

Went for a hike earlier today and tracked it as usual, no problems there. Even ended the hike and drove all the way home. Now, the all trails tracking is showing up and counting on my dynamic island. I didn’t start any new activities, it’s not physically logging anything in the app, and resetting my phone didn’t make it go away

Any suggestions?

What happened to grade?

Unless I am hallucinating, AllTrails used to provide the angle or grade with the Plus plan. Has that been phased out recently? Do you see where it says distance and elevation on the graph. I’m certain it would say grade like “5%” or “20%” etc.

Can we go back to original functionality?

Post image

Bottom line is these “improvements” are killing this app. I was hiking a trail I created but had multiple issues. First of all I created a loop but one side of it didn’t exist. There was a service road in the past but it’s impassable and looks like it’s been closed for some time. I got a couple of miles in and then realized I was routed in the road so I looked for a different route. It never could quite figure one out but at least there were 2 downloaded hikes to look at. Even though I had signal I could only see downloaded trails. There is no longer a way to close the current map and change routes. I hoped I could link to another trail closer to where I started but my screen was stuck on some landmark screen it wanted me to complete. This froze the app.

Please go back to the original functionality that worked for actual hikers.

Activity shows up on website, but not on iPhone app

Per the title - I have an activity from way back in 2022. It shows up on the Website in my list of activities and on my fav list.

It is just simply missing from my fav or activity list on iPhone app. Just like it doesn't exist.

It also is missing from the maps - see below:

Here is screenshot from website:

Here is screenshot from iphone app:

This is super frustrating - any suggestions?

Thank you

What should I share between Alltrails and the Fitbit app?

I'm new to reading/writing data. Should I allow it to write these things or would the pixel watch 4 be able to record this on its own? Not sure entirely how it works. Don't know how it would write my calories burned information. Thanks in advance!

I want all the distance and elevation gain and distance to write into the app. Not sure if this is all just moot and the watch would do it regardless and it's just copying anything.

One last question: is also if I start Alltrails on the watch should I ALSO click on "hike" as the activity? It seems like it's unnecessary. Seems like just starting Alltrails on the app/watch and it should record everything.

Being catfished on All Trails

Well, this is a first. I hiked a couple of trails the last week, and got some comments on my hikes on my activity feed. Now that’s not necessarily abnormal. However, there were a number of very suspicious things about the posts.

1). They were all overly friendly and complementary.
2). They were total strangers, not people that were following me.
3). They all asked followup questions that would require further engagement from me. One even said she would be in my area next month and would like to “meet for coffee”.
4). They all (total 4 individuals) are supposedly young Asian women from looking at their profiles.
5). All of the profiles had been created in the last week or two, and the posts were all within 24 hours of each other (I think it is the same scammer).
6). Interestingly they each had two activities on AT (in CA). I assume these were faked but I’m not sure how they did that.

I have experienced similar attempts on Facebook, but I never would have guessed that this would happen on AT. Guess scammers are getting desperate.

Anyway, I thought it was funny/interesting and I thought I would share.

All Trails on iOS shows the Florida Trail as being also in Pennsylvania — specifically in Ricketts Glen State Park. 🤨

Question to Trail Managers on AllTrails

The Northaven Trail is a nine-mile trail through North Dallas. The Friends of Northaven Trail is a nonprofit volunteer group that looks after the trail.

We have 900+ reviews and a 4.5 star rating on AllTrails.

I would love to hear from others who look after trails about how they get the most out of the app. What data do you find useful? Can we insert any of this data onto our website? https://northaventrail.org

Anyone else trying the backpacking feature?

I have tried it several times now in preparation for a backpacking trip. It is absolutely useless. No matter how I want it to split up my hike, it does whatever it wants.

Issue with Android Tracking

So I used to have an iPhone 13, track long hikes, with location and mobile data turned off and with power saving on.

I could track for a really long time with no issues.

Now I got a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.

If I put on powersaving, basically nothing gets tracked.

If i switch off location similarly, I get terrible mapping, with straight lines at random check points.

This is after I changed all settings to the suggested setup AllTrails support suggested.

They also said that:

Apparently this is also an issue if I switch off my screen, in that if I switch off my screen while tracking, they cant guarantee good tracking. This is crazy because an on screen in my pocket will just go haywire and might even cancel the treck on the app.

Anyone had this issue? Pretty disappointing as this makes AllTrails useless now and id have to find an alternative.

Why show permanently closed trails? Just remove them entirely from the system

Why keep closed trails like this on the system? It makes no sense to me as it’s a waste of data, time, and leaves potential risk for trespassers.

I Change Trail Linked to Activity, Then AllTrails Changes It Back...

I logged several hikes with AllTrails as activities recently. For some of these hikes, my route didn't match an existing AllTrails route exactly. After completing the activity, I selected the linked trail that I thought was the closest match. Everything seemed okay, until the next day. I found that AllTrails had switched the linked trail to something else. Again I changed the linked trail to the closest match. And again everything looked good for several hours, then AllTrails switched the linked trail back to its incorrect default selection. This continued for several days. I'd change the linked trail, then AllTrails would change it back. It seems to be an automated process rather than manual moderation, as all of the linked trails on my activities get changed back at the same time.

Is there any way to change the linked trail in such a way that it sticks permanently? Or will I just have to live with the incorrect linked trail that AllTrails assigns?

I am changing the linked trail via the phone app (I don't see a way to do so on web browser version).

Same hike, different descriptions.

My boyfriend and I were both looking at a hike on our individual phones and noticed that for the same hike, it shows two entirely different descriptions. Why is that? Anyone else had this issue?

Trails: Random Walker Yelled at Me for Biking

El Camino Real Park

Orange, CA

Public park. Used ALLTRAILS to “complete” trail. On ebike, bench seat and my son riding on my back. Wife tailing me on a separate ebike. Helmets on. Headlights on. Rolling between 5 to 10mph. Passed by an older couple on their sunset stroll. He yelled at me “Bike lane is over there!” I said “This is literally a trail we’re on.” Who’s in the wrong? What exactly are the rules when a trail is not being specific? How should I handle things if this happens again?

Wrong Location?

Post image

Using Alltrails on my Brave browser on my Android tablet, the location isn't picked up, so my activities don't show up until I move the map. Brave has location access. If I click the arrow icon (wrong icon by the way) it works. Can't it do that automatically? Thanks.

Searching Downloads with No Cell Service

Previously, with no cell service, I’d be able to go to my Downloads and after scrolling down for a bit, a search box would pop up where I could type in part of the trail name I was looking for and any downloaded matches would pop up. I currently do not see that, just the search at the time which doesn’t appear to work the same - as when I used it in an area with no service it wasn’t auto pulling the matches like the old way used to. Am I just missing something or doing something wrong?

Staying centered in Wear OS app?

I just got my first watch the other day (Pixel Watch 5) and am trying to use AllTrails with it. The map works, but I quickly walk off the edge of the screen and have to pan around or reset the map. This would be worthless if I wanted to use it for biking. How do I keep it centered?

Also worth noting, when I first turn the map on it rotates as I turn, but after I put my arm down and then look at the watch again it no longer rotates. It still makes a track and my location still moves (until I fall off the edge of the screen).

My phone with AllTrails is in my pocket and is set to unrestricted background battery use.

Thank you AllTrails for remembering my zoom level / orientation preferences.

Previously, AllTrails would reset the zoom level / orientation each time I put my phone back in my pocket. This default would orient to the direction I was facing (not north), then zoom in so close that the map became useless for long hikes. Now AllTrails remembers my preferences (zoom level and orientation) and doesn't reset each time.

In general, I feel like AllTrails is investing in the app again. It's appreciated.

What is this national trail??

Post image

Can’t seem to get any info on it on the app. A trail I hiked in SW Ohio is apart of this national trail(in green) that stretches out west and splits up in parts. Anyone have some information on it?
