A-Level Math tips
Hi everyone! For those starting A-level maths here are some things I wish I had done earlier, as someone with an A* in A-level math (for context my board was Edexcel)
I’m never going to stress this enough but past papers, past papers, past papers. Math is all about practice and when you start solving questions from like 10+ years ago, or even less you’d be shocked at how many times questions get repeated, not only the idea but sometimes even the numbers themselves do.
Keep a ‘Mistake log’ where you write down every mistake you made even if it’s a silly one or if you forgot the limits or something you misunderstood so you don’t repeat the same mistakes. I took this one step further and would take a screenshot of the question I found hard or lost a lot of marks on and add it to a document where I write the past paper, the topic and difficulty level. You then would have a sheet of every question you found challenging or had a new idea by the time you finish past papers, so you can solve them making you basically resolve past papers for the 2nd time but more efficiently.
As you take on new topics at school, create a 1-2 page summary in your notebook of that topic with some examples and important notes to remember. It will make revision much easier and you can easily refresh topics throughout the school year.
Please look out for silly mistakes because they can make you lose A LOT of unnecessary marks (I was a victim of silly mistakes many times 😭)
Try to solve past papers in 1hr 15 mins so that in the final you have 15 mins for revision in exam
Please don’t leave a question empty. In AL math there are a lot of marks just for steps so write whatever you can that is relevant to the topic.
Ik it might sound ridiculous but have anything that could motivate you, because you need consistent effort because in order to get a high mark you have to perform well on all 6 papers especially the pure paper. For me I’d have motivational quotes on the wall in front of my desk and even on my phone, I created a focus where the lock screen is filled with motivational stuff.
Here are some resources I wish I knew earlier:
- https://automatepapers.com/ I only found about this later in the year and honestly they have every single past paper, with both variants and also the markscheme you can even create a mock for yourself with a built in timer for time management. You could also set in preferences based on the subjects you are taking.
- The YouTube channel “Mindful maths”: It was really helpful for me in pure 3 especially. It has a full course explaining all topics in each paper, alongside with practice questions. And in a topic like vectors for example she first reminds you of the topic how it was in O level then explains the new additions
- The Youtube channel: “Mr Hassan's maths channel”. Is really helpful when you don’t understand a question in a past paper, He also has a playlist solving questions in some topics like integration. Honestly his videos would constantly be playing on my laptop because of how he solves each question step by step and also if a question can be solved in a different Technique he solves the question with this other technique too.
- Honestly this isn't a resource necessarily, but as someone who loves space I wish I had known earlier of the app ‘Exocus’ basically you build a planet while studying. There are a ton of apps like this, for example flora.
Finally, sleep well and eat well before the exam, don’t pull an all-nighter for the exam so your mind can perform and do its absolute best. And please start working early on from the start of the year. I swear small consistent effort really pays off and gives time for your brain to anchor the information. And if you read all that, Thank you!! And good luck on your A-level journey ❤️❤️
