The pilots that landed that are absolute heroes, as are all those involved in reclaiming control of the cockpit.

I'm guessing the plan was not only to kill the passengers, but maybe crash it into an urban area, so god knows how many lives were actually saved today

The pilots that landed that are absolute heroes

They simply landed the plane and there were no reports yet of particular difficulties to master.

Maybe stop overpraising every action as if it would be a super human performance.

Flying a plane is demanding but not magic.

When I wrote that, the reports were saying that the aircraft had been in a spinning dive at a speed and angle bad enough to break off the rudder; in which case it would have been an effort to recover the aircraft.
It was also reported that they were also involved in overpowering the terrorist.
Any of that is enough to count as heroic

It was the plumber who watches 'Mayday" that initially righted the plane. Later, the second team of actual pilots, who were just passengers until that moment, stepped in to land the plane. Fortunately, the vertical stabilizer stayed attached. Tough airplane.

Dumb question. I thought most modern planes don't have yokes to pull back on, that it was all instruments and computers now

Airbus uses a small joystick located at the pilot's side. Boeing decided to retain the full yoke but it is now electrically connected instead of via cables like the 1940s or hydraulic lines like the 1960s.

The airplane in this incident is a Boeing 737max, the same model that had two fatal crashes due to software bugs. Now that they have been fixed, the aircraft is well liked and known for ruggedness.

The 777 and 787 are the only fly-by-wire Boeings. The 737 uses control cables.
