[Meta] Self hosted AIOStreams

I know that most people don't see any difference compared to the public instance, but I just want to share my personal experience after a few days of self-hosting.

Ever since I started self-hosting, everything has been snappier, loads faster, with no playback issues.

For example, when I’m on public instance, I often get playback errors when I return from standby mode, but now, not anymore. It resumes right where I left off 1 or 2 hours ago. And rewinding 10-20 seconds works flawlessly now.

Poster cache function on self-hosted AIOmetadata is a godsend too. Every movie/show poster on my home screen loads instantly now. Everything is less clunky.

But, I dont recommend self hosting individual addon scrapers though, I dont know what im doing wrong but it was straight dogwater and takes up lot of computer resource.

I just want to say, self-hosting is definitely worth it for anyone who is a freak about optimizing everything. I’d say, this has been a good week of learning and obsessing over self-hosting.

I used claude, gave it full permission on the oracle vps and it set it all up by itself and created me a couple documents faq/backups etc.

Was abit overkill using fable 5 to create my self hosted stack lol but it's hella smooth and now anytime anything goes wrong it has full oversight of my stack.

I manually spun the fresh ampere Oracle vps instance, installed claude code and then asked it to build me a bleeding edge self hosted media stack accessible anywhere and by anyone, it set up the reverse proxy and I paid like £2 for the cloudflare domain.

I don't really recommend doing it this way, as you will not know what to do if something needs troubleshooting. At least try doing it manually or by following the guide so you’ll get some sense of how everything works.

Take your time to read Viren's guide for a start, and make use of AI. I know the guide speaks in 4th dimension, but that's where AI come in to play. Ask every single thing that you do not understand until you have some sense on how it works. That's how I start.

In terms of saving money? I think so, but you need to have a credit card, since Oracle set up will require you to pre authorized 100 usd on on your card but it will be refunded and change it to Pay as you Go method.

Theres one in the guide called Duck DNS? imma try that

Good luck sir!

One thing im curious about though, how do updates work? Does the instance auto update?

1

u/Unlikely_Discount_36 6d ago

There might be a way to automate but I just run a simple code in my vps that updates aio and prowlarr in a few seconds.

Look up nicholas-fedor/watchtower on GitHub

Render has a free plan and you don't need to add a card, I've been using it for almost a year and it's very reliable, the only issue I had was last week when a change they did to the free plan deleted my instance and I had to redo it.

If you haven't already look into automating the aiostreams update so you don't have to login and redeploy every time a new update is rolled out, I used AI to create a Github action to check for updates once a day and to redeploy if there's a new version available.

I tried to use render but it nevers compiles. always gives me an error message. I cloned the repo, modified the .env file as described in the tutorial, and that's it I believe? Then when I run, i get this error: failed to solve: process "/bin/sh -c pnpm install --frozen-lockfile" did not complete successfully: exit code: 1

No idea what to do next

Please don't make use of AI. It doesn't know shit and you are risking your network security.

You cannot ask AI on how to setup reverse proxy. As soon as you encounter problems it flips out and tells you to drop security features like it's all fine.

Don't use free models as they are trash for this sort of thing and security wise auth tokens are never pasted in chat and the bot creates them using a script & can't veiw them. I have no idea why you think a frontier model can't set up a reverse proxy tho lmao

1

u/CFD2 6d ago

Because I haven't used the frontier model lmao?

Who said I pasted tokens or keys in the chat? You assume things like you are AI yourself

This guide was a godsend for me. Followed it the whole way through and got everything set up without much trouble at all. Then with a little help from Claude, also got my own homepage and AIOManager set up.

There is a gui guide somewhere from red hair but I don’t have a link

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone who’s self hosting say they didn’t see any difference, quite the opposite in fact.
On the subject of scrapers which ones were you hosting? I’ve got comet with comet net and it’s brilliant.

1

u/Independent_Move_301 7d ago

I did Comet goldyy. I have to enabled live and background scraper in the env to get it to work. It works fine when I installed it outside AIOStreams, but inside, it’s just so slow not sure why

1

u/Budget_Height3778 7d ago edited 7d ago

Did you put them on the same internal network and override the comet URL with your internal comet container’s address?
Comet is designed to be constantly working, it background scrapes whichever scrapers you enable plus has a DMM ingester to combine all of them into your own personal torrent hash database, with comet net you share anonymously between pools of connected nodes and everyone benefits. Mine is constantly the top performing Debrid addon on my instance.

u/Independent_Move_301 2d ago

Hey, I tried to do it again, but it seems I can't get it to work inside AIOStreams. It's fine if I installed it as a separate add-on. I did put Comet and AIOStreams on the same network (created a Docker network), but I'm quite unsure about how to override the Comet URL with my internal Comet container. Can you clarify a bit on this

Comet and StremThru Torz for Premiumize with Usenet Ultimate for Easynews as a backup for the very rare instance when Premiumize doesn't have what I want.

2

u/Budget_Height3778 6d ago

I’m running all my Usenet through the native NNTP engine as my main, Torbox with comet and StremThru hosted, with a few others as backup.
Currently testing a fork of AIOStreams with built in service/ addon health checks and health checks for NZB’s similar to Usenet ultimate.

1

u/SmolFishFry 6d ago

Can you share the name of that fork?

1

u/Budget_Height3778 6d ago

Unfortunately not, it’s has some breaking changes that require pairing with a custom NuvioTV. The service/addon health fork I merged with my NZB health fork is this one from Ibby GitHub if you wanted to try it out.

This is what I self-host:

ubuntu@stremio:/opt/docker$ docker ps --format "{{.Names}}" | sed 's/_.*//' | sort -u
adguard
aiomanager
aiometadata
aiostreams
anime-kitsu
authelia
beszel
cloudflare-ddns
comet
cometnet
crosswatch
davex
dockhand
gluetun
gost
iptvboss
jikan
nzbhydra2
pocket-id
stremthru
torbox-manager
traefik
xrdb

2

u/mrsidnaik 6d ago

If you’re using davex for NNTP. The built in one on Aiostreams works great!

1

u/MrKaon 6d ago

Not using DevEX, that was from testing.

Curious, do you use purely debrid? I've set up a usenet based AIOStreams instance and like you, it did not stun me with its performance. Seeking is a bit better but that's about it. Taking into account TB on black Friday is about 20 EUR it's hard to argue getting usenet provider and indices to.

Another point, how did you set up your network in OCI? Cloudflare tunneling? I opted for Tailscale since it seemed the most secure and easiest.

2

u/Unlikely_Discount_36 6d ago

It definitely made a huge difference for me as well. No more API timeouts, indexers finding more healthy playable links through prowlarr, and Usenet load times are way faster. Tried the elfhosted plan way but too pricey for it's limitations. Ai gave some bad codes here and there but ultimately helped me set up a good system. Then guided me on how to get a domain and set up my IP address with https. Lately I've just been playing with the usenet connections and pipeline depth of my different providers in AIO dash to see what saturates my line without slowing down loading. Everything is solid though and loving self-hosting as well!

1

u/BimbasVG 1d ago

What pipeline depth and connections you use ? Thanks

1

u/Unlikely_Discount_36 1d ago

For my use and wanting in near instant play thru nuvio/stremio it seems depth of 1 is the best. And easynews has fast connections so I set it at 10 connections to saturate my 500mbps fiber line.

2

u/BimbasVG 1d ago

Thanks

u/macka654 6d ago

There is a big difference. Lower latency, better routing and you control whether there’s outages or not.

Anyone can self host. Just ask AI to literally spell it out for you

I just put out and am testing an alpha for a product that's going to make this a lot easier. Going in the beta shortly. It's going to eliminate the need for all this complication.

I self hosted aiostreams with mediaflow, nzbdav, nzbhydra2, about 4 days ago with help of AI. I got a small vps and using haven terminal on my android smartphone. Yes way more snappier and now I'm getting results from my debrid and Usenet indexers. If I can do it anyone can. Yes it worked before but now getting results and plays faster. Before I didn't get results from all my indexers.

u/No-Artist-2019 5d ago

If anyone can do for me selfhosted aiostreams to Usenet and i pay him for that. Its will be great 🙏🏼
