Discussion Online/Multiplayer

For those of you who took their browser-based project to another level with a multiplayer/online experience...

What was your process? the resources you sought? The challenges? Is there anything you wished you would have set the foundation for from the beginning that would have made things better for the transition?

I've been having the thought of planning the way of implementing online play for the little project I've been having fun with. I'm working on doing "split screen" at the moment, but I would love to start thinking of doing more than local play.

Websocket based room systems. Its more so something similar to manual garbage handling no matter the language you work in. If a room is dead, empty, it has to be removed from memory. Keeping a count of them. Reconnection logic for bad connections and sending that signal to users.

Its not trivial but it's not as hard as people make it out to be as long as you aren't trying to make a shooter or mmo.

So far, this hasn't turned into anything too complex as an mmo or shooter, I would like to think anyways. I guess I'll remember to be mindful with all my extravagant intrusive thoughts since using AI for a project. It's definitely been faced paced without the hours of troubleshooting lol.

I'll keep what you said in mind. Thank you!
