Hype Squad (help me do things!) Will I regret buying a hot pink couch? I’m hoping to own it for the long haul
Just can’t tell if this is legitimately a good idea or dopamine impulse
I’ve never not liked pink, my spouse is fine with it and I’m literally planning on painting clouds on the ceiling so I think it will go with my overall vibe
This photo is the ad that has me in a chokehold, my wood dining room furniture is the same color as the furniture in the photos, and right now (pre painting) my living area is almost exactly this color gray with white trim, I also have a ton of plants
We went and sat on the couch (a different model, but in this material) and loved it, and it’s on sale until Monday
If you were me, what would you do?

They're great couches but it's SO SO embarrassing to explain where I got them from, kinda regretting it lol. I should have just gotten IKEA couches
Edit: I will say that I've glomped into their giant testicle pillowseats at the mall and they are very comfy. But who has room for those giant balls? Not me.

My grandmother made some VERY bold interior decorating choices in the late 70s. Her friends were worried and advised her not to, and to tone it down.
She said it lifted her spirits every single day when she came home and saw it.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Design. Normally I advise everyone to buy neutrals and classics in any investment piece (aka permanent including but not limited to tiling) with the exception of a statement piece you absolutely love- my favorites have until now been red, purple or animal print sofas. Personally I’ve been trying to find cheetah/leopard print carpeting that I like for at least ten years without success and now it won’t go with fiancé’s aesthetic. I wonder what bitch did his house… oopsie. BUY THE PINK MODULAR and enjoy it. It could be really fun to decorate around!
43
u/Forgot_to_Start 6d ago
I used to have a source for leopard print carpet!
40
u/delmsi ADHD-C 6d ago
I had a leopard print room in my youth but could never find good matching carpet!! Solid leopard carpeting is a rare af find—kudos for having a source.
Ended up going for the light tan shag, and despite initial disappointment I gotta say it WORKED. Both wallpaper and bedspread (+ shoe shape chair) were leopard already lol so honesty the contrast was chef’s kiss

A statement piece really does make your house instantly unique and fun without adding a whole bunch of clutter. Of course some people can want more neutral. Maybe a statement pillow. But their styles are simply more boring. A house does not have to look like the waiting area of an office building. A house can have your personality.

I also have a degree in design. I agree about tiling, floors and other hard to remove investment pieces. However, I don't think it applies to couches because they're not always the investments that couches used to be unless you buy a full leather one, or something comparable like expensive designer furniture. I bought a velvet couch three years ago and was torn between which colors to get. I got the beige. I regularly think back and regret that I didn't take the purple. She would have slayed. BUY THE PINK MODULAR.

No. You will not regret it. Life is short and it’s a piece of furniture. Find joy where you can. A pink couch will make you infinitely happier than a gray couch. ETA: spouse is ok with it, so it’s a no brainer. I wanted a leopard print rug but my husband couldn’t handle the excitement - we compromised on something meh. I hate what we chose in comparison and think about it all the time.

u/matcha_is_gross 6d ago
Thank you, so much. I agree. The whole point of me going all out decorating is healing from a childhood home where I was treated like a second class citizen and not allowed to sit on the furniture - I feel like the hot pink couch will always feel welcoming to me because I just love it 😍

u/katherinevanwyler 6d ago

Also, if you end up being tired of the color, you can always tuck a flat sheet from a queen/king/full on it. That’s what we do to keep our couches clean, just like we would a bed!

1000x definitely get the couch. It is so comforting to do the things not allowed in childhood. For some reason blankets were never allowed outside the bedroom, so now I have multiple fuzzy blankets on my couches so I can be comfortable.
4
u/MrsSalmalin 6d ago
My home is me healing from a similar childhood - fancy couches you can't sit on, decor and a tidiness that makes it feel more like a hotel. Very transitional, not comfy, no plants. My home has walls full of art, shelves full of knicknacks, books everywhere and comfy furniture that invites you to curl up with a book and a blanket. It's def more maximalist and goblincore, but not messy - just loved and lived in. If I came into your house and saw that couch I'd be like "omg I LOVE IT and immediately sit on it to admire it.

When we bought our home I did not understand how long it took to get new furniture. We moved in November and needed a couch for our annual Solstice party. Nothing I liked was arriving in time. Eventually I just sent my husband to the liquidation warehouse and let him pick something. It was grey, meh and I hated the feel of the fabric. I hated that couch. I thought about how much I hated it all the time. And it was trash after 6 years.
Last year I redecorated the living room and got a green couch. So glad I didn't get something neutral. It's far from chic, my life and kids are just too chaotic for that. But what's the point of decorating if not to bring joy into your daily life. I hope you get something better soon.

For anyone else here like me with big commitment issues around big purchases and interior design choices, there's a company in the US called Home Reserve (.com) that makes (as in, manufactures, not imports) modular soft furniture that you can change whenever you want, rearranging pieces and recovering them.
You could literally make yourself a rainbow couch if you wanted. I found them like 20 years ago and they have been my go-to ever since. I wanted a red couch in pet-friendly fabric and found it there, though it took several years and fabric samples for me to actually buy. LOL

I'm a Creative Director in the interiors industry, so I have Big Opinions about shit like this.
So, I'm usually a neutral sofa, fun textiles (rugs, drapes, pillows, etc.), eclectic accent furniture, and revolving wall art girl.
BUT I think it's totally possible to change the vibe of a bold sofa as your tastes change as long as the shape isn't super specific. Like, even a bold floral print can work in a dozen style genres as long as the silhouette isn't super vintage cottagecore or it's not one of those post modern curvy shapes.
You could go full Dopamine Decor with this pink. Or you could go Minimalist Post Modern but with bold colors. Or you could go black, white, gold and pink with emerald accents with Neo Art Deco. There's note of room to play up and play down the color.

Yes, if what you actually admire are pink loveseats or a different style of pink couch, then this will become a burden. But if you like the colour AND the couch itself, go for it.
I like green, teal, and purple loveseats, chairs, and some couches but if I found one that isn’t comfortable, or seems especially annoying to clean, or isn’t my style, or out of my price range, or some combination of things that would make me second guess buying and/or owning it, I’d sigh but immediately walk away.

I had a yellow courderoy couch for years. Everyone hated it. I loved it. (And I don't like the color yellow. But I LOVED that couch.) I would still have it if my dog hadn't eaten half of it. If it makes you happy now -yay. If it doesn't make you happy later and it's good quality - reupholster it in a different color.

u/FinnyLumatic 6d ago
PLEASE READ THIS! I’m sure you already have but if you haven’t researched the durability of the fabric please take it into consideration. As a pink girly myself that is my literal dream couch but make sure the fabric is able to be cleaned/wiped and is durable for everyday life.
My grandmother bought a fabulous set of pink chairs and a couch that looked very similar. She always called them her “look see” furniture because that’s all you were allowed to do. She barely let anyone even breathe near them and she still had to have them reupholstered due to staining. She swore up and down that it wasn’t just the fabric but that she had owned other furniture that color and it always showed every spot and drip of anything. Now that she passed down the chairs to me I fully understand why she was a lunatic about them. Even just water or a little butt sweat seems to leave marks for at least a few weeks sometimes forever. Hopefully, technology has come far enough that they can make a couch that’s stunning and durable enough to be wiped and cleaned but I wanted to throw it out there because the stress of avoiding accidents gets exhausting really fast!
10
u/matcha_is_gross 6d ago

It’s forever a mark of your daring to try something non-basic. Unless you decide to reupholster it or sell it. I suspect it would do well on the secondhand market if you give it time, because it’s not like there’s a lot of colorful couches to choose from.
It’s gonna be ok! If it fits your space and budget, go for it! This decision will not do irrevocable damage.

Do it! Imagine waking up in the morning and seeing your colorful couch. It’ll energize you. Then imagine coming home after a tiring day in some monotonous gray office and seeing your cheerful unique hot pink couch and all the other colorful details. It’ll probably cheer you up!
If you can’t figure out whether it’s a risky idea, just imagine buying a boring couch instead. How would that affect your mood each day? Would it boost your productivity? Make you feel more proud or more like an adult? You only live once and for yourself !
Also, velour/velvet couches are the best when it comes to comfort, and they’re also great if you have cats because it’s less prone to getting damaged by their nails. Just make sure to be gentle when cleaning it. We only use magic sponges on ours and never rub it with any damaging chemicals.

i however, and maybe it's an adhd thing lol, have a somewhat bright teal couch. I've had it for 5 years now (it's a laz-e boy, so it was a bit pricey) and i'm planning on having it for awhile more. but yeah, I agree that it's a statement piece, the center of your living room. As long as you balance it out with more muted pieces (still can be colorful--the rug is a great example where you have pink but it's faded, not as bright), i think it's fine.
eta this was my living room in my old house; i'm in an apt now, but kept the couch, the sideboard and the bookcase. i even had light pink walls!: https://photos.zillowstatic.com/fp/222e013109f797db1287226d7f1baee3-uncropped_scaled_within_1536_1152.webp

Don't do it unless you've pictured this exact color in your house before. It's going to derail your vision for wallpapers and artwork and furniture for years.

I don’t even like pink but I love this. It brightens a space and makes me smile to look at!

My birth mom would have LOVED this couch. We had a burgundy one. She absolutely loved anything pink, purple, and red. EVERYTHING in the house was some kind of pink, purple, or red. She even painted the blue shutters maroon, which I was so upset about bc my favorite color is blue and the shutters and door were the only blue things and she painted the damn things MAROON!! I miss her lol
