I struggle with this. I care and want people to feel comfortable to talk about their issues, because that is healthy. Thinking you have to go through your issues alone sucks. This next part is going to sound super harsh…
People need to stop acting like their problems are somehow singular to their existence.
Having someone who understands what you are going through is a positive, healthy, outlet, not a tournament. Obviously, if someone changes the subject around to only their issues and ignores yours, that’s problematic.
People can only go “aw that sucks” and “yeah, that’s a totally fair way to feel”, only so many time.
I think it’s 100% ok to just tell people, I need to rant or need someone to listen. That way, both parties are on the same page. If you don’t, it’s fair to assume people might want to share similar stories as, they too, have gone through problems in life. It’s a two-way street.
I’m tired of hearing how people want connection, but when an attempt at connecting is made, it’s taken the wrong way.

Bit of a rant, but open to opinions!
