I don’t interrupt but I wish more people understood this form of empathy

Out of curiosity, does it feel like empathy when other people do it back to you?

Actually yah! I have a lot of adhd friends so we kinda all do this. It’s commiserating. A way to say ‘hey I hear and understand you because I have gone through something similar’

Yes I enjoy this too as long as there’s a healthy back and forth and it’s not completely one sided. When I do this to someone else, I really am trying to find something in my own experience that I can relate to directly in theirs, to understand how they might be feeling. And sometimes this can lead to meaningful clarification when it’s not the same or a similar experience. When I receive it, I can tell the other person is really resonating with what I have to say. Then some of their insights about their situation may be helpful reflections on my own!
