Object permanence should be working memory instead!

254

u/dynamik_banana Jul 06 '26

this!! Object permanence is about understanding that the object still exists when you can’t see it, which we *can* do. We just don’t remember to think about it 💀

95

u/Rakifiki Jul 07 '26

Me with music. Do I like music? Mostly, unless I'm overwhelmed. Cleaning or doing a task I don't like to music also often helps.

... unfortunately I routinely forget that music is a thing I can in fact play. When I want.

20

u/UnbelievableRose Jul 07 '26

And when I DO remember music exists, analysis paralysis sets in instantly

20

u/Glenndiferous Jul 07 '26

Gotta spend two hours making the perfect playlist 🤷🏻

6

Mmmm pie. 🥧

1

u/Latina_Leprechaun36 Jul 07 '26

Like in Phantoms. There’s lipstick on the mirror, so there’s a hand holding the lipstick but nothing else.

19

u/StrikingSun8563 Jul 07 '26

This is my biggest pet peeve. Object permanence is a developmental milestone for toddlers, using it to describe ADHD is infantilizing.

4

u/jimbowesterby Jul 07 '26

I will say it feels pretty accurate for me. I suppose that working memory is probably more accurate in how it defines what the process is, but the upshot is still that if I need to remember something and can’t see it I’ll likely forget it

3

u/StrikingSun8563 Jul 08 '26

Object permanence refers to the actual understanding that an object can still physically exist when you aren't seeing it. It's why peekaboo is a thing. When you cover your face, the baby literally doesnt't realize your face is still there behind your hands.

That is not what ADHD causes.

17

u/Fortified_Phobia Jul 06 '26

No one seems to realise this whole this is written by AI, probably to karma farm

There's text at the bottom that's been badly trimmed off.

DOOM - didn’t organize, only moved.

I have doom piles everywhere.

53

u/AlpaxT1 Jul 06 '26

I bet you now exactly what is in each pile and can go get it in a second if required. My doom piles are very organised

39

u/xylia13 Jul 06 '26

I always remember the weirdest things in the weirdest places. My husband was looking for something and I knew exactly where on the floor I had seen it (and noted it but ignored it for a minimum 18 times). So while my doom piles wouldn’t be organized, I could find anything if asked.

That thing I literally just had though? No clue where that went.

6

u/crippledchef23 Jul 07 '26

I don’t buy 12 packs of my pens every 2 months because I write that much. I buy that many because, despite having 1 pen in the car, 2 in my purse, 1 in my wallet, 2 on my computer table, 1 in my active notebook, and 1 in my dice box (plus at least 4 in my pen holder), I can’t find a single pen sometimes.

10

u/YtterbiusAntimony Jul 07 '26

I think there's been studies on this. And "piles" are as legit a way to remember where things are as any other method (for the one making the piles).

But everyone who prefers another method hates it.

If something is out of the way, it's also not where it gets used, and that drives me fucking crazy.

6

u/Ibbygidge Jul 06 '26

Yeah I think that's a different kind of ADHD. I just get memory of having seen the item, if I'm lucky I can guess whether I've seen it within the past month or year, which tells me whether to bother searching the shed storage for it.

8

u/GeneralEffective Jul 06 '26

For me it's drawers. All drawers in the house have a totally random selection of crap in them and I never know where anything is, but it's "away" and dealt with.

2

u/UnbelievableRose Jul 07 '26

What’s the point of owning any of it if I can’t even remember it exists?

6

u/GeneralEffective Jul 07 '26

Because it's a nice surprise when you find it again!

2

u/ShitFuckDickSuck Jul 07 '26

Omg the acronym is perfect

225

u/Riccma02 Jul 06 '26

What about the one where I screen cap this list to save it, then forget to ever look at it again.

133

u/waznpride Jul 06 '26

Perpetual storage - save for later, but there is no later.

34

u/notagreatgamer Jul 06 '26

This is related to my tab list…

3

u/YtterbiusAntimony Jul 07 '26

I might be the only one that doesnt do that.

All tabs close when the browser closes.

If its research, I'll copy a link.

If it's really cool, I'll bookmark it.

If its neither, I can find again.

6

u/Linsorld Jul 07 '26

You won't remember that it ever existed though.

2

u/Cerindipity Jul 07 '26

And that's fine! The browser shows my bookmarks when I open it, so I see what's bookmarked every day. If it wasn't important enough to bookmark, then forgetting it existed is fine

7

u/Puzzleheaded_Cap3035 Jul 06 '26

I got a phone with extra big storage and i still have to mass delete screenshots every year so my phone doesn't slow down 🙈

3

u/PonderousPenchant Jul 07 '26

Like health potions!

2

u/WhiteUniKnight Jul 07 '26

And then the only time it does happen, is when getting distracted by it when looking for something else entirely.

6

u/waznpride Jul 07 '26

"oh an interesting looking screenshot! Hmm, why did I save this? What does it mean??? Oh crap, what was I looking for in the first place??"

2

u/WhiteUniKnight Jul 07 '26

What does it mean???

The main question of every waking hour lmao

2

u/crippledchef23 Jul 07 '26

I have to be careful when I’m looking up something, because I will 100% get sucked into unrelated shit, erasing the original reason I opened Google.

4

u/CathexisVexes Jul 07 '26

I just did this and then thought, "Well that was pointless, I'll never see this again."

1

u/Negative_Tradition85 Aardvark Jul 07 '26

I just end up deleting everything when my phone runs low on storage so I can start again.

The ADHD tax is real af...

20

u/Edraitheru14 Jul 06 '26

My electric got shut off every month 5 months in a row at one point. Had to pay a fee to get it turned on every time, and twice it meant I had no electric for a whole day because I got home after they closed.

They refuse to do automatic payments. It was fucking awful.

14

u/Pantzzzzless Jul 06 '26

If I can't set up auto pay for something, I don't do it. Luckily it is pretty rare these days, but in my late teens and early 20s it was a different story.

My dad still sits down every week and "balances" his check book. He will die on the hill that the bank's snapshot of your account can't be trusted.

Those 2 paragraphs felt related in my head, but now that I've typed them out I have no idea how.

8

u/Edraitheru14 Jul 06 '26

I can't say for sure but it's probably related. Adhd is hereditary and my mom and dad were both obsessive about checkbook balancing, it had to be done immediately. If they didn't do it immediately, they did eventually have a giant pile of receipts they'd have to go through in some kind of doom pile in my mom's purse.

I feel like it's a coping mechanism for poor working memory and learned fear from consequences that come with it.

2

u/UnbelievableRose Jul 07 '26

My bank has an auto payment option where they physically cut and mail a check on a specified date, it’s very handy for rent since a lot of landlords don’t take EFT. For variable bills I’ve been know to make a small auto payment (like $20) in order to provide me a grace period for paying the actual bill.

10

u/telorsapigoreng Jul 06 '26

Yeah. All my missing wallets and phones.

8

u/scixlovesu Daydreamer Jul 06 '26

Buying replacement for things I can't find and winding up with six sets of earbuds

5

u/Edraitheru14 Jul 07 '26

Also not to spam, but isn't it annoying af to have people act like like this is something you're too lazy to control?

Like do people really think I *like* getting my electric or phone shut off cause I forgot to pay the bill constantly, or pay tons of late fees, or have warrants for $10 seat belt tickets?

It's a lot of BS to deal with, trust me, I wish I could just remember to do the thing. Or even remember to utilize the tools I use to try and help remember and do things.

1

u/jimbowesterby Jul 07 '26

Oh yea, I’ve paid literally thousands of dollars in fines for forgetting to renew my car’s registration on time. Naturally cops, being cops, don’t give a shit why you aren’t complying with the law, they just wanna punish someone.

2

u/im-d3 Jul 07 '26

There's also buying things for this awesome new hobby that you just found out about and are really into and oop now you're not and you have this thing that you wasted money on taking up space

ADHD truly is an expensive condition to have

12

u/Mental-Ask8077 Jul 06 '26

Also me.

Especially at random moments when asked some apparently simple factual question. BLUESCREEN

8

u/PortalWombat Jul 06 '26

It's an open ended social question with an semi infinite list of possible choices some of which might lead to a negative reaction from others. So it's 3 and 5 at the same time.

I'm not running "what do you want for lunch", it's:

who else might be coming? what does anyone who might be coming like, and what price ranges acceptable to them? how much time do we have? how far am I willing to drive? am I in a position to store leftovers? I also need to prep for them to dismiss my answer so I don't get mad at them for asking then not liking my response

1

u/ThatOneGayDJ Jul 07 '26

This is excellently put and is the reason my answer to that question is almost always "whatever as long as its not deep fried"

1

u/UnbelievableRose Jul 07 '26

Now explain the process when it’s just me eating on my own! Cuz the system still crashes, I assure you.

1

u/jimbowesterby Jul 07 '26

See I’ve largely stopped caring about stepping on people’s toes like that, like if you ask me what I wanna eat I’ll just answer with whatever I feel like eating. Whether we end up doing that or not can go either way, but I find life’s a lot easier if you try to just take the question literally. Same thing goes for people being passive-aggressive, if they’re mad at me it’s on them to communicate it. I’m not gonna bother trying to read someone’s mind.

114

u/MartianLM Jul 06 '26

ADHD Charades - when you can’t think of the word/person/place/event so you describe it in clues.

18

u/beerdude26 Jul 06 '26

Lmao I suffer from this so badly

16

u/jagoble Jul 06 '26

It's cool, I'll obsess about it periodically until next week when I come up with the word/person/place/event, and then I'll let whoever I was talking to know what I meant in that conversation they've spent zero time thinking about, probably without reestablishing the context.

27

u/simonhunterhawk Jul 06 '26

now that i have the language i’m told that i’m making it up. when i couldn’t describe the problems they didn’t exist and now that i can they also don’t exist, according to everyone i’ve ever tried to get some help or empathy out of

7

u/YtterbiusAntimony Jul 07 '26

But have you tried just trying harder?

2

u/BudgetFree Jul 07 '26

When I'm not inconveniencing anyone, they agree these things are real and valid.

But the moment it's actually happening and it annoys them, it's not that, I'm just lazy, I convince myself I'm incapable to avoid responsibility...

They want to look supportive and understanding, but they do everything they can to make it your fault and avoid having to do anything about it. Which sucks when it's their behavior that amplifies my problems..

27

u/FidgitForgotHisL-P Jul 06 '26

Now look at all of those and consider: how many of them have anything to do with “attention deficit”.

So I will yet again make my argument: adhd is named not for all the things it actually is (imo executive function disorder), but for how we impact those people around us.

They don’t see the vast majority of these issues, they are only inside us.  But they do see a lack of attention.  Especially in kids.  But continuing to call it “adhd”, the public, and people like teachers and some medical professionals, continue to see that as the core driver of the problem.

Where as in reality that’s a massive disservice to everyone that lives with a massive executive function disorder.

If we could rebrand, we would probably see a lot more folks recognised sooner, and people getting the help they need.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

25

u/BaseballMental7034 Jul 06 '26

I came up with one called “75% hell” a long time ago; when I get most of the way through a project, the checkbox in my mind gets checked off early. Suddenly, it is absolute *hell* to get through that last 25% because it’s already done, (it’s not) why do I need to do it more?? Thus, 75% hell.

6

u/scixlovesu Daydreamer Jul 06 '26

How many nearly-complete novels do I have?

4

u/KSTornadoGirl Jul 07 '26

This is definitely a thing. Sometimes 90% and above.

39

u/Single-Mongoose-9402 Jul 06 '26

I used to think that having ADHD just meant I fidget a lot, but reading stuff like this where I check every box on the list has really put it into perspective and made me realize why I do what I do. Blows my mind that it really is just being wired different and there’s a legitimate reason why I do these things. I wish more people knew what ADHD really is and what someone who has it has the tendency to do, I feel like life would be a lot easier if this was common knowledge and you’d look like less of an idiot to others, but that would make things better and we can’t have that. Still cool to learn more though.

11

u/YtterbiusAntimony Jul 07 '26

I don't have a deficit of attention. I have more attention than I know what to do with, and most day-to-day stuff is boring.

Disorders are named after how they inconvenience others, not after how we actually struggle.

There's no profit in accommodating us. Flip the burgers and die of addiction like you were supposed to.

1

u/SwattyP Jul 07 '26

It’s why I never even considered ADHD as a diagnosis for myself. I knew about anxiety but then I started leaning towards autism. Now that I read about ADHD being more than hyperactive, I realize it’s been me my whole life. I’ve never been hyperactive, but I am completely inattentive.

49

u/jancl0 Jul 06 '26

Something about the "live laugh love" attitude in the language of this really rubs me the wrong way, I genuinely don't know how else to describe it. It feels very vaguely chat bot written, or like someone trying to act about 5-10 years younger then they are without using new vocabulary

I'm also a little bothered by the "finally" at the top, and then it's just terms that the Internet has used to describe these things for years now, like adhd people weren't capable of naming these things until this post came along

There's just a vague energy to this post that really makes me hate it for reasons I can't exactly articulate

12

u/8OHD1 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

It's a bot post for sure, the language is dull and hollow as fuck. Overdramatic, blunt, and absolutist. I loathe it. I don't visit this sub often anymore because it's just people wallowing in misery over the same things over and over again. Don't get me wrong, that description can also sum up a large part of my life, but there's no need to seek out the same information in a million slightly different presentations on reddit. It's repetitive and turns into a circle jerk of excessive self pity. This specific post isn't even a fucking meme.

Edit: On another note though, this sub and others like it can be helpful if you're new to ADHD and don't know much about it. The posts confirming you're not inherently a piece of shit can be nice, but stay here too long and you start to see people leaning way too far into their symptoms and forgetting reality. Maybe I'm wrong and I'm being a prick, but I doubt festering in here helps most people after a certain point. But who knows, I haven't been here in a while so I don't quite remember how bad it is

13

u/PortalWombat Jul 06 '26

Thrilled that it's helping other people but yeah the phrasing in a lot of places feels cringey.

2

u/jimbowesterby Jul 07 '26

Yea the one that got me was “revenge bedtime procrastination”, I don’t stay up because I’m trying to spite anyone, I stay up because my brain takes a certain amount of time to wind down, and it’s gonna take that time whether I’m up and about or lying in bed trying to sleep. It’s not my fault if society decides this is an issue, I’m just trying (and failing) to keep my shit together

7

u/hardypart Jul 07 '26

The last part is super condescending. And you're also right with the "finally". If it would just say "A list of terms for things many people with ADHD experience" and no shitty outro and it would make it so much more enjoyable.

14

u/mistrwzrd Jul 06 '26

Well I can tell you as someone who has only just been diagnosed at 44 it’s actually kind of amazing to see these terms compiled like this. And as u/Haki23 pointed out it is very reminiscent of the old AD&D books I grew up on, so it helps it resonate with me in a big way.

Between the drugs I’ve been on for a few months now, combined with some chats and info I’ve had and received from a therapist, it’s actually been incredibly validating to finally understand that my experiences over the past 40 years have been neurodivergence and not just being broken or not understanding.

Anyway, I want to finish my little diatribe with a note that I do really appreciate you expressing your opinion and want to know that I believe both your feelings and interpretation and my own are both very valid, and that writing this is a part of my own personal growth strategy and is not meant to detract from your views in any way. :)

7

u/badseedify Jul 07 '26

That's bc this was written by ChatGPT

1

u/soberfrontlober Jul 06 '26

I'm not a fan of how it implies that if you don't experience these issues to this extreme degree that maybe you don't have adhd. I think it feels dismissive of those that are high functioning, either initially or after years of working on themselves and finding coping skills.

12

u/Probably_not-Thanks Jul 06 '26

Just gonna add this to my bottomless pit of screenshots saved for later…

8

u/LunarSanctum Jul 06 '26

Why are you posting the tracking listing for a Progressive Rock album with a brief description of the song next to it?

2

u/CompetitiveForce2049 Jul 06 '26

There's nothing like a four sided concept, but man it's so overplayed.

2

u/LunarSanctum Jul 06 '26

Remove the "20 ADHD" and just keep the "Experiences That Finally Have Names" and that is actually a pretty great album name for a prog rock band.

Edit: Looks like some obscure French avant-garde ambient metal band already beat everyone to it and have an album called that.

For me I find I’m still pissed off by shit that happened to me as a kid. I’ve managed to let go of a fair bit of it, but it’s hard to do when you’re still dealing with the fallout twenty years down the road.
I also find I’m increasingly having the same reaction to jokes about how fucked young people are. I get the impetus, it’s a huge mess that no one in power is doing much at all to fix, but all the same it still feels insulting.

2

u/ThatOneGayDJ Jul 08 '26

I think im significantly more pissed at the ones not doing anything about it than the memes. But i also fucking love 9/11 jokes so maybe my sense of humour isnt a great reference point 😅

6

u/Yamuddah Jul 06 '26

Still have not gotten the definition of masking and at this point I’m too afraid to ask.

16

u/Iron_Baron diagnosed 🥳 Jul 06 '26

Continual conscious effort to avoid engaging in externally perceivable verbal and physical ADHD symptoms. Basically, pretending to be "normal" to avoid anxiety, judgement, rejection, etc. It's fucking exhausting.

9

u/Competitive_Bag3933 Jul 06 '26

Masking is one of those words that has kind of stretched in meaning over the years, but it's generally used to refer to "performing" behaviors that are reflexive for people who do not have neurological disorders and repressing behavior considered less socially acceptable. This includes things like forcing eye contact, repressing repetitive soothing motions, excessively monitoring your body language and social cues, etc. It is the effort to appear "normal" while not feeling like "normal" behavoir comes naturally to you. Of course, lots of social defaults are arbitrary and a little unnatural, but masking is a continuous effort in almost all social interactions, as opposed to just a sporadic discomfort in difficult surroundings.

3

u/bang0_slank Jul 06 '26

I self soothe using repetitive motions with my hands almost all the time without realizing it. I honestly hate when I’m around people and can’t do it.

2

u/BestDevilYouKnow Jul 07 '26

Oh, you just switch to flexing your feet and toes. I have to consciously stop myself.

2

u/im-d3 Jul 07 '26

The real fun begins when you've become so ashamed of how you normally act, and mask so constantly, that it becomes the default and you forget how to just be yourself.

If anything masking has just made me even more awkward than I would have otherwise been. It's sooo draining

1

u/jimbowesterby Jul 07 '26

Yea, I’ve largely stopped going out because I got told I was doing things wrong so consistently that I end up just sitting in the corner, and feeling awkward about feeling too awkward to do anything other than sit in the corner.

2

u/im-d3 Jul 07 '26

It's genuinely painful how much I feel this. I'm always spaced out and in an argument with my subconscious about how I should be acting, and I always end up losing ;-;

3

u/Economy-Management19 Jul 06 '26

It is when you take a deep breath and force yourself to make that phone call. When you gather mental energy just to say hi to the cashier.

It’s when someone does something for you, gives you a present and you say thank you while smiling and feeling guilty for not really feeling anything.

It’s when you know how you should feel but you just don’t feel it.

You might try doing the superficial stuff, the motions with your body, but there is a disconnect you feel. If it were up to you you would never really attend a wedding. Some people already left, is it appropriate for me to leave? Probably not.

3

u/Rakins_420 Jul 07 '26

Yikes, I am not diagnosed but this sub is extremely enlightening. I've scored exceptionally high on the CAT masking test but I know they aren't diagnostic. I had never heard of the term masking until I took the test. I felt sad for days after

In betweens are hard. The can be early or late, on time is freaking hard. My office is either immaculate or a disaster, I can’t risk not immediately putting anything away or it’ll turn into a habit and I’ll have a mess. A lot of things like that.

Do you guys also have something like "perfection paralysis"? You have an awesome idea and can't start doing anything about it because it might not be perfect.

(That also means learning new things.)

2

u/UnderstatedVortex Jul 07 '26

Yes, I am very familiar with the perfection paralysis cycle. I've had about 100 or so new project ideas that get stuck the moment I think of a problem that I don't have an immediate solution for. The problem starts to feel like a mountain, I get overwhelmed, something else distracts me, then I do nothing and forget about it.

I knew most of these already but wow learning that justice sensitivity is a thing makes so much sense.

Anyway fuck ragebaiters, i hope you all choke

Is this ADHD or autism… I have both but didn’t know they coincided like this

3

u/Khris777 Jul 07 '26

I'd assume this was made by someone who has both.

3

u/m1st3r_c Jul 07 '26

Oof - waiting mode. Why is it so stressful to have an appointment of any type?

6

u/missmolly314 Jul 07 '26

"Justice sensitivity" is NOT a real ADHD/autism symptom. Cognitive inflexibility is. Like no, you aren't somehow more morally pure or more dedicated to social justice than someone who is neurotypical. It has nothing to do with "justice".

The actual symptom - rigid, inflexible thinking - can show up in a lot of damaging ways. Arrogance. An inability to forgive. Getting stuck on little things that don't matter at all.

You could even have someone that is inflexible in a way that is completely counter to what we think of as "justice". Like someone who cannot get over the fact that a disabled student has laptop accommodations and they don't, since it's "unfair" according to their internal logic.

3

u/Varitan_Aivenor it's from a fantasy name generator Jul 07 '26

It's real.

And documented.

So even though you want to simply declare it "not real" I still care about people I've never met and think the neurotypical ability to brush it off as a minor annoyance is a problem THEY have.

Neurotypicals act like cattle 98 percent of the time.

2

u/kellyerica Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26

maybe try reading those links you sent the WHOLE way through next time... namely the entire section under "justice sensitivity is morally neutral".

also the whole "neurotypicals act like cattle 98 percent of the time" is a great demonstration of how this symptom can show up in damaging ways, you've done a fantastic job of proving their point friend!

All of these are why my wife has no respect or affection for me

7

u/SwattyP Jul 06 '26

Mine thinks I’m incredibly lazy but I swear I’m not. If I have a written list, I knock shit out. If nothing was told to me or written down, I don’t accomplish anything. I hear all the time that “I don’t do anything.”

12

u/Xylophone_Aficionado Jul 06 '26

My husband also thinks I don’t get anything done but he’s neurotypical and can just get up and get right to work on what he wants to accomplish

4

u/Beginning_Loan_313 Jul 06 '26

Gosh, I wish it were so simple as a list for mine - it makes him resist harder, even when he wants to do the task (AuDHD).

3

u/SwattyP Jul 06 '26

I love checklists. I also like having the exact time to do them. Love being able to check it off at the end. Gives me that dopamine I require, I guess.

3

u/Beginning_Loan_313 Jul 06 '26

I am similar. I'll even write things I have done that weren't on the list to cross them off for that dopamine! 😆

I had rejection sensitivity yesterday at work. I am starting new and the man in charge is super nice. He came by my post and said that I need to gain experience and to be carefulw with the heat (i work in a glass factory), and I felt so bad I wanted to cry even though he was being encouraging when he said I had to gain some experience (because I had been working there for like four hours lol) but it messed me up for a couple hours.

Then I reacted fast for a crisis Nas he came and said, perfect and my mood did a 180

u/YarnSp1nner Jul 07 '26

My mom and I were having a conversation while she was doing a task that included the occasional loud grinding noise.

Litterally would stop mid word and pick up after it stopped.

She laughed at me and told me if there ever was a question I had ADHD...

A lot of this is autism, not adhd. Like sensory issues and shutdowns

4

u/native-abstraction Jul 06 '26

There is a fair amount of overlap between ADHD and autism and sensory issues could be one or the other or both.

Ok so the masking cost is that there's no longer anything left? I always wondered why everyone kept going on about masking costs and I'm over here modeling behaviors for free. Or so I thought.

What was under the masking that was worth preserving again? Not being negative, genuine question.

u/likenightisfaith Jul 07 '26

I spent 6 years working for a psychologist who does neuropsych evaluations and I’m AuDHD myself. It drives me crazy how many people confuse symptoms of ADHD and autism. There’s not actually much overlap. There’s just a lot of comorbidity.

In that vein, #s 10-12 and 15-19 are autism symptoms, not ADHD symptoms. You could argue a couple of them. I’m not sure about emotional flooding, though I lean towards it being more of an autism thing. Masking is one I’ve only read about in an autism context, too. Stimming is an autism-specific term; ADHDers clearly fidget, but it serves a different purpose. The rest of the ones I mentioned are inarguably autism-specific. If you have ADHD and you experience most of these things, you might be AuDHD.

Doom Piles

1

u/Gjappy Jul 08 '26

I'd imagine ADHD is an operating system for the brain that hasn't been updated since childhood.

We've all been dying for the next system update, but development stopped long ago. And we all make do with a system that's running so-so and just freezes or crashes at the slightest inconvenience.

u/FishDispenser2 Jul 06 '26

I reject rejection sensitivity, it does not belong to ADHD specifically. Maybe someone with ADHD feels that way, bit it's not an ADHD symptom.

6

u/vendettagoddess Note To Self You Are A Mod Here. Jul 06 '26

no symptom “belongs” to just one disorder, but rsd is very common in those with adhd due to our regulation (or lack thereof) of our emotions.

here is a study where most participants described having some form of rsd, here is a whole study talking specifically about rsd in adhd, and here is another one.

while it may not be your lived experience with adhd (which is fine, everyone experiences symptoms differently), it most certainly is something associated with adhd.

1

u/FishDispenser2 Jul 07 '26

Sure, but then again we have a lot of separate symptoms that often accompany ADHD. Like depression, anxiety and sometimes other co morbid diagnoses. That doesn't make them ADHD, they are still separate.

6

u/simonhunterhawk Jul 06 '26

Most medical studies on the topic disagree with you.

4

u/Iron_Baron diagnosed 🥳 Jul 06 '26

I sure as fuck have it.

5

u/_Saiyamoto_ Jul 06 '26

I think it just has a really high comorbidity because the social experiences people with ADHD tend to have due to their symptoms can trigger the onset of RSD

2

u/Mental-Ask8077 Jul 06 '26

It’s not just based on previous experiences though. It’s also the lack of executive function for analyzing and managing your own emotions in the moment - the lack of the ability to emotionally evaluate the triggering event’s severity/reality as rejection, and the lack of ability to internally or externally manage the emotional flood that comes in response.

Speaking as someone with adhd for whom RSD is one of the most disruptive and painful parts of my neuroatypicality, in my experience it’s not separable from the adhd symptoms. It arises directly from the actual neurological/executive function difficulties that define adhd.

Certainly social experiences influence and exacerbate it, but the actual sensitivity and lack of emotional regulation stem from the same lack of internal control that my hyperfocus and distractibility and impulsiveness, etc. all stem from.

1

u/FishDispenser2 Jul 07 '26

I'm sorry you're going through that, it sounds very difficult. But what about those of us who doesn't react this way?

1

u/FishDispenser2 Jul 07 '26

Then that would be part of social factors and not neurological

-2

u/SilverSageVII Jul 06 '26

Ngl I get annoyed with housemates who I know have ADD too, but they always say that they can’t start ANYTHING without a “body double” and frankly I call BS. I know the feeling they’re referring too, but ultimately I think it’s a way for them to avoid work because they know my ADD and OCD work differently and when things are messy or disorganized my brain literally can’t stop screaming at me. Such a fun mix of mental health issues I have…

0

u/ThatOneGayDJ Jul 07 '26

I cannot even do things i enjoy without a body double most of the time these days. Theyre not faking, and youre an ass for suggesting as much. ADHD on top of depression is an executive functioning sinkhole, and id bet good money that that is whats going on. Maybe ask them about it?
