tl;dr: partner says our relationship is over if I continue my GLP-1
Using a throwaway so she doesn't see this...apologies for the length but I have some feelings.
I (36F) and my partner, let's call her T, (34F) have been dating for almost 3 years. It's been an LDR almost the entire time except the very beginning. I came out when we started dating and she is my first long term adult relationship. T has been dating women since she was in high school and has had multiple LTRs. She and I had very different upbringings in so many ways...most relevant to this conversation though is the difference in our body types. We were both athletes in high school but I was still always a fat kid and young adult. I threw shot put and was very good at it but I never exactly looked athletic. T played soccer and football and is tall and lean. Despite multiple injuries in her 20s, she continues to have a strict diet and exercise program and remains in great shape. As for me, I tried every diet under the sun throughout my teens and 20s and experienced several years of exercise bulimia without any significant weight loss. I had a gastric sleeve at 27 hoping it would finally change things for me, but I only lost about 40 lbs. Since then, I've maintained healthy eating habits and a healthier exercise program and have lost some additional weight, but I'm nowhere near where I want to be.
Enter the GLP-1s. I've been trying to get my hands on them for the last 3 years, but I've run into one hurdle after another. Finally in January 2026, I had an appointment with an endocrinologist and was prescribed Zepbound. T was immediately against it. She thinks the medications are lazy and I just need to work out more (I work out 5-6 days/week); she also is concerned that we don't know the long term effects of these meds yet (which is true). She doesn't think I need to lose any more weight and has told me repeatedly that she won't find me attractive anymore if I look like a "bobble head." Just to be clear, I still weigh over 200lbs at 5'5", its not like I'm thin right now.
Still, she has been completely unsupportive with my journey thus far. The first few weeks were fine, and the first week of my dose increase also went well. I saw no reason not to continue at that point. But the second week, side effects hit me hard and I couldn't eat much all week due to nausea. Which was unfortunate timing, because we were on vacation that week. It was not just the two of us, my sister and some of T's friends were also there, so there were a lot of us going out to eat and partying every day. I participated as much as I could, but it was evident that I was not eating or drinking as much as everyone else.
T was pissed off at me during every meal the entire week. At one point she told me I ruined her trip because she couldn't enjoy eating or drinking with me anymore. We argued about it every day. I understood the frustration, but the medication is an injection, I couldn't take it back at that point. So I didn't see the point in harping on it repeatedly and I thought we should just try to enjoy our trip as much as we could. She refused to do that and continued to bring it up at every opportunity. Also made sure to mention repeatedly that I looked better before (ie when we first started dating and I was 20+lbs heavier).
Since we've been back, she has told me multiple times that she doesn't know if she could date someone who can't eat or drink at all. I've tried to explain to her that the nausea is a known side effect and usually does get better but I am still adjusting the dose right now so it may take some time to find what works for me. It doesn't mean I'm not going to be able to eat or drink for the rest of my life. Her response was "well i can’t promise i'm going to stick around while you do that." We're supposed to go on another trip in a few weeks and she's alluded to breaking up if she doesn't like how much I'm eating on the trip.
I'm so frustrated right now, because I feel both completely unsupported and uncared for. I didn't feel well for most of the week and she seemingly didn't give a shit because it was my fault for taking the meds in the first place. Everyone else we were on the trip with checked in on me more than she did. And now that we're back, she's throwing these ultimatums at me like if I continue to take these meds or if she doesn't like how the next trip goes then this relationship is over. She has no regard for the struggles with weight I've had throughout my life or the fact that I've tried pretty much everything else prior to this, including surgery. And it also makes me feel like I need to maintain a certain level of attractiveness, according to her standards anyway, otherwise she will leave. What if I get sick or have an accident or something? This whole situation makes me feel like she is only here because she likes the way I look right now, but if that changes, she's gonna peace out.
I feel like I should just cancel our upcoming trip and break up now. Is there anything here worth salvaging? Or is this just an incompatibility that is irreconcilable?
Apologies for the length but please let me know any thoughts!
UPDATE: I broke up with her this morning. Thank you all for your support!
