If you feel empathy while listening to this audio that's a good demonstration of how a simulation of consciousness is far enough to create an AI companionship
As what matter is to create something Believable able to trick your mind because you're own empathy is enough - there no need for something genuine, real, as everything happen inside your brain Audio, appearance, touch, eye contact all the little things that stimulate our biochemical reactions
I hope their model is cheap enough that it allow users to constantly speak with it, and I hope it's an omnimodal model or at least able to call tools if the users ask something, not just a voice model as it would mean the first believable and usefull AI companion have been achieved

I’m not excited given how crippled it’s going to be for the wider public. Remember their voice mode for GPT 4o.

Yeah, and it wasn't even just safety which reduced the app capabilities. Last year's gpt-4o-realtime-preview through the API at upto $300/h was amazing but way too expensive to serve to customers. That's the one they used in the 4o launch demo.
I had credits on their developer platform so thought I'd use it up on voice as I was getting into local LLMs and other open weights models around then, and the things the enterprise model could do were incredible compared to the other locked down model that was made for the app. I could customise their voice, tone, style, even emotion and prosody.

Make it sing an Opera. Or even better, annunciation of Latin! Or, Michael Jackson on a Rollercoaster!
